The state motto of New Hampshire is ‘live free or die’. Some people take it too seriously.
Birder begins with a romantic scene between two men who are camping by a lake, but as director Nate Dushku distracts us with the beauty of the trees, the dappled light on the water, the serene blue sky overhead, it slowly becomes apparent that one of the men has disappeared. The other sits by their camp fire burning papers and clothing. He tidies everything away as a responsible hiker (or murderer) should, then leaves the scene.
This is the birder, a man who will subsequently introduce himself as Kristian, from Green River in Vermont, though we can never be fully certain of his identity. In certain circles, people don’t push. There are plenty of sympathetic reasons why a man might wish to be discreet. Later he will claim to be living off money inherited from.

As much as people might like to view western countries as being more accepting and liberal, the fact is, there is still a very conservative attitude that pervades society when it comes to sexual activity. It's not surprising that anyone whose interests fall outside of a very strictly heteronormative lifestyle, as it were, would seek out safe spaces where they and their fellow adults can engage in consensual sex acts without judgement or fear. Of course, safety is never gauranteed, and Nate Dushku's feature directorial debut Birder looks at a predator who finds just such a safe space, and turns the trust of its inhabitants to his advantage. A film that expresses both the naturalism of a more open sexual identity and the danger that...

Birder
A serial killer enters the supposedly safe space of a queer nudist campsite in Nate Dushku’s first fictional work as a director, Birder. Screened at Atlanta's Out on Film, the Seattle Queer Film Festival and DC's Reel Affirmations, it’s a film which explores a culture rarely seen in cinema outside pornography. Though it does feature sex, this is no more explicit that in the average present day erotic thriller. The focus is on a different sort of thrill – or chill – as the stranger works his way through a population ill-equipped to defend itself, breaking the spirit but never the letter of the various agreements he makes as he persuades his victims to consent without a full understanding of his intentions.
When Nate and I discussed the film last month, I told him that, to me, it seemed that one of the film’s biggest concerns was the ease with.

The official trailer for director Ondi Timoner’s Mapplethorpe biopic is out, portraying the controversial artist as he ascends from nowhere to become one of the most talked-about media creators of the 20th Century.
Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith is Robert Mapplethorpe, with Marianne Rendon as punk poet/rocker Patti Smith, Mapplethorpe’s muse.
Mapplethorpe discovered himself both sexually and artistically in New York City throughout the 70’s and 80’s. The film depicts Mapplethorpe’s life from moments before he and Patti Smith moved into the famed Chelsea Hotel, home to a world of bohemian chic. There, he began photographing its inhabitants and his new circle of friends, including artists and musicians, socialites, film stars, and members of the Bds&M underground.
That work displayed eroticism in a way that had never been examined nor displayed before to the public. Much of it was derided or outright banned in certain locales during his lifetime,...

For the last 15 years, Bring It On and Dollhouse actress Eliza Dushku and her brother Nate Dushku have been trying to mount a biopic about controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
“It’s not the easiest thing to get an art film financed, we’re not a Marvel comic,” she told Deadline at our Tribeca studio.
In 2002, Eliza and Nate were introduced to the original script for Mapplethorpe by writer, Bruce Goodrich. In 2006, Goodrich optioned his screenplay to documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner. The parties approached the Mapplethorpe Foundation in 2008 seeking backing and support for a film. A match was made marrying director Timoner and the Dushku siblings who funded the option from the Foundation for the right to tell the artist’s life story and reproduce his artwork for the film. In 2009, scribe Mikko Alanne joined the project to work on the script.

[1] Whether you love James Franco or can't stand him, it can't be denied that the man works hard. As if he didn't have enough on his plate already -- what with films including Oz: The Great and Powerful, Lovelace, Spring Breakers, and his directorial effort The Broken Tower all coming up, plus all of his non-movie projects -- he's now added Mapplethorpe, a biopic of the late photographer. The Tribeca-backed picture will be the first narrative feature by documentary director Ondi Timoner (Dig!, We Live in Public). Franco will topline the cast as Robert Mapplethorpe, whose explicit works sparked debate over public funding for the arts in the late 1980s. Between this and Howl, it seems Franco's becoming the go-to guy for historical movies about controversial artists. Timoner, Miles Levy, and Eliza Dushku will produce along with Nate Dushku (Eliza's brother), who was lined up [2] to play Mapplethorpe at one...

James Franco is attached to star in a dramatic feature about controversial gay photographer Robert Mapplethorpe says The Hollywood Reporter.
Mapplethorpe created large-scale, highly stylized black and white portraits, photos of flowers and nude men. Its frank homoeroticism caused controversy and arguments over what defines obscene. Mapplethorpe died of AIDS in 1989.
The project has received grants through the ninth annual Tribeca All Access Program. Documentary helmer Ondi Timoner ("We Live in Public") directs and produces with Nate Dushku, Miles Levy and Eliza Dushku.

A group of high school friends celebrating Blood Night, the anniversary of the death of a local axe murderer endearingly know as Mary Hatchet, get more than they bargained for when, after attempting to conjure her spirit with a Ouija board, they begin to meet their brutal and blood soaked deaths. Is it really Mary Hatchet's spirit or something far more unexpected and sinister?
If glowing, exemplary reviews could be awarded simply for good intentions, then Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet deserves them in droves because it is obvious that the individuals involved with the making of the film had a passion for what they were doing and were attempting to make more than a dull slasher film. You’d figure with 100-plus personalities bouncing around in her head, Eliza Dushku would have her pick of post-Dollhouse roles. But then news broke Tuesday that her next project would be headlining the horror film Zoe with Freddie Prinze Jr. (that’s Mr. Sarah Michelle Gellar) and James Van Der Beek (that’s Dawson, remember Dawson?). Um, Ok.
Now, as great as Eliza is in horror/action/anything that involves wearing leather pants, the role as the eponymous small New England town waitress fighting God knows what doesn’t sound like much of a stretch. Maybe that’s because it might not be true. The reported by bloody-disgusting.com goes against what Eliza herself has said will be her next project — namely, an ambitious Robert Mapplethorpe biopic. (Note: Update from Eliza herself, below)
In an interview last Friday with PaperMag Eliza talked about the Mapplethorpe film:

It's almost over, folks. Joss Whedon's gone-too-soon series Dollhouse will air its series finale on January 22. The series, cancelled due to low viewership, will leave behind a small but dedicated fanbase, who will certainly love this titular follow-up to the first season's finale, "Epitaph One." It's a dystopian episode, apparently, that will take place in the dark future of 2019, where the technology of the Dollhouse has been turned into a global weapon — and will focus on the efforts and the group of freedom fighters "The Actuals" to take down the threat.

Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet will have an online release through the website of the film beginning Novemenber 22, 2009. A film that is very graphic and living up to the name, the first twelve minutes of Blood Night can be seen here. But be forewarned the footage is mature in nature, very graphic, and not suitable for younger viewers, seriously (scenes of rape and murder)! As well, Blood Night has been available on DVD since October 30, 2009. Check out the twelve minute unedited footage for Blood Night below. Again, the reel is for those eighteen and above.
Read the synopsis for Blood Night here and steel yourself for what is below:
"Long Island, 1978: A young girl named Mary Mattock gruesomely murders her family and is locked away at the notorious Kings Park Psychiatric Center. Ten years later Mary escapes, leaving a grizzly wake of bodies and blood. Gunned down by the police,...

The big-screen terrors just keep comin’ for Halloween and beyond as more revivals and special screenings have been announced. You can track back through our previous coverage starting here, and mark your calendars for the following recent announcements:
• New York City’s Maysles Institute (343 Malcolm X Boulevard/Lenox Avenue between 127th and 128th Streets) is in the midst of a series simply called The Horror!, focusing on documentaries pertaining to fright filmmaking, with all shows starting at 7:30 p.m. Tonight, Roy Frumkes will present Document Of The Dead, his chronicle of the making of George A. Romero’s classic Dawn Of The Dead (which will be shown after Frumkes’ post-document Q&A). Tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 28, there’ll be a rare chance to catch Joel DeMott’s Demon Lover Diary, the saga of the highly contentious production of the Michigan-lensed ’70s cheapie Demon Lover, starring Gunnar Hansen. Blood Night: The Legend Of Mary Hatchet director Frank Sabatella got in touch with the cover art for the limited-edition DVD of the movie, which hits October 30 along with the regular special-edition disc. He also informed us of a cross-promotion between his movie and New York City’s Blood Manor haunted attraction.
Scripted by Sabatella and Elke Blasi and produced by Sabatella and Frank Mosca, Blood Night stars Nate Dushku, Samantha Hahn and genre faves Bill Moseley and Danielle Harris in the tale of a group of youths terrorized by the spirit of ax murderer Mary Hatchet the night before Halloween. We previously spilled the details of the two DVDs here; the standard special edition (with the art above) can be pre-ordered now at Amazon.com, which the limited edition is available only at the movie’s official website.

Robert Mapplethorpe and Nate Dushku
Last month we told you that Dollhouse star Eliza Dushku was developing a biopic of artist Robert Mapplethorpe, and would star her brother Nate.
If, like me, you dismissed the briefs blurb as just another insane scribbling by our Blog Editor, you're in for a shock: it's true!
According to Variety, Dushku has secured the rights and received the full cooperation of the Mapplethorpe estate, and the film, called The Perfect Moment, "will chronicle Mapplethorpe's career from his rise to fame in the 1970s for his portraits of socialites and rock stars until his death in 1989 at age 42 from complications arising from AIDS."
Tapped to direct is documentarian Ondi Timoner, and most intriguing is the casting of Nate Dushku, for whom Eliza developed the film: "Nate physically has an uncanny resemblance to Robert," she said. "Some pictures are really eerie." (Interestingly, the "official" announcement of...

The creators of Blood Night: The Legend Of Mary Hatchet sent along word that the official website for the grisly new indie feature has gotten an upgrade. They also passed on a couple of exclusive new pics you can see below the cut.
The enhanced site, which can be seen here, “is a cool and creepy place with tons of info, photos and even an awesome ‘Escape from the Asylum’ game,” Blood Night director Frank Sabatella tells Fango. “There’s a bunch of great downloads, some awesome videos and even a chance to win prizes! So go there, join our mailing list and tell your friends…Mary is coming!”
Scripted by Elke Blasi and produced by Sabatella, Blasi and Frank Mosca, Blood Night is about a bunch of high-school friends who go out to raise a little hell on the titular eve, which commemorates the gruesome rampage of Mary Mattock,...

I keep hearing about Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet in that strange way that a film’s title will become implanted in your brain without you really understanding why. So I guess it was inevitable we mention it in these pages, eh?
The film’s creators just dropped us a line with word that the opening scene of Blood Night will be on display at this weekend’s Monster Mania convention in Cherry Hill, NJ (home of Harold & Kumar’s White Castle), where Nomad & I will be kicking ass and taking names all weekend. A Blood Night panel featuring director Frank Sabatella, producer Frank Mosca, makeup man Jeremy Selenfriend and stars Danielle Harris, Samantha Hahn and Nate Dushku is scheduled for Saturday, where the footage will debut.
