In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, director Wes Ball plans to breathe new life into the franchise with a story set several generations in the future following Caesar's reign. Apes are now the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows.
As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Given Ball's expertise in the young adult realm with The Maze Runner movies and chatter about Kingdom shifting the spotlight to a younger cast of characters, some fans have expressed concerns about the classic sci-fi franchise becoming a franchise for teens. Then, there's also the fact it has to follow the previous trilogy (no easy feat).

The impressive reboot series of the Planet of the Apes movies continues as the stories look to extend further than the arc of the revolutionary leader, Caesar (memorably played by Andy Serkis). The film is out in about a week, and now reactions to the new entry from The Maze Runner director Wes Ball have started to roll out on social media. Our official review will be released on Wednesday at 11 am Et, but our own Chris Bumbray got to catch an extended preview of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and was impressed, calling the footage “pretty jaw-dropping” and a worthy continuation of the modern trilogy.
Our own JimmyO participated in the junket, writing on Twitter, “#KingdomOfThePlanetOfTheApes maintains – and builds – this impressive world that was explored by Matt Reeves. Wes Ball, The Maze Runner director, offers rich characters and an interesting take on the franchise.

The summer movie season is here. After a frankly terrible start to the box office in 2024, all eyes are now on everything from "The Fall Guy" to "Deadpool & Wolverine" to give movie theaters a reason to celebrate. As far as May goes, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" looks to get things moving in the right direction, being the first entry in the franchise in seven years. We've got a new filmmaker, a new cast, a new timeline, and a new reason to believe that this classic sci-fi property will once again find life more than 55 years after the original film debuted in 1968.
Current tracking suggests that "Kingdom" will open between $54 and $61 million domestically, per Deadline. Assuming that holds, it would be a damn fine start for the film. While the budget has yet to be revealed, it is said to be in the $120 million range. Disney and...

After nearly 90 years, Universal has decided to reintroduce one of their oldest monsters, Dracula’s daughter, with their latest horror film, Abigail. The original 1936 film, Dracula’s Daughter, was a direct sequel to the 1931 Dracula and second in the series with the third being 1943’s Son of Dracula.
Abigail takes the basic idea of the spawn of the rapine of darkness but changes it in many ways. First, the character’s name is now Abigail, while the original was Countess Marya Zaleska. Second, Abigail is portrayed as a little girl, while in the original, she appears to be a grown woman. Third, the film is far more violent and gory, while the original was more about suspense and atmosphere.
But how does this interpretation hold up? Is it a worthy reimagining of the classic tale? Let’s sink our teeth in and find out.

A final trailer arrives to build anticipation ahead of Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes' UK release on 9th May.
Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes is just eight days from release here in the UK. Because of last year’s strikes, blockbuster movies are a thinner on the ground this summer. The latest instalment in the relaunched Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, arrives in theatres exactly ten days from now, and 20th Century Studios has released quite a bit of new promotional material, including an action-packed final trailer spotlighting plenty of new footage.
The teaser tells us a little more about new lead ape, Noa, and reveals why he has a vendetta against the tyrannical Proximo Caesar. We also hear Mae speak, and it seems the human girl is fully aware that the world once belonged to her people before the ape uprising.
Does this mean Kotpota will bring events full circle? It's possible, but we might see at least one more movie before things begin to link up to the original Planet of the Apes.
Check out the new trailer, along with a poster and two featurettes, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

We’re still a week away from the theatrical release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, but director Wes Ball already has a fun idea for the Blu-ray release of the film. While speaking with Ape Nation (via GamesRadar), Ball revealed that he’s working on a special feature for the home-media release which will allow viewers to watch the entire movie without CGI. This means that audiences will get to watch Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with every actor in their mo-cap suits prior to being transformed into apes by Weta FX.
“I’m doing a little thing for the DVD where you can watch the movie – the entire movie – with the raw dailies,” Ball said. “I’m working on that, where you’ll be able to watch and see both the final [cut] and the raw dailies. You can see how close they get, what they do,...

The vampire horror sub-genre has become increasingly popular yet again. Of course, the main representative of the genre of the recent years is the new TV adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, based on Anne Rice's famous gothic horror novel, but today we will talk specifically about the movies.
Last year alone saw the release of two feature-length vampire horror films, Renfield by Chris McKay and The Last Voyage of the Demeter by André Øvredal. What they have in common are one aspect: an absolute failure in terms of critical and audience sympathy.
In this context, the new horror film Abigail is particularly noteworthy. Even though it is currently showing rather modest box office indicators, the new movie has already managed to get rave reviews. That's all thanks to how intelligently the script is constructed, with relevant and genuinely clever references and to the 20th century works that inspired it.

A fiercely capable woman with ice water in her veins finds herself in a creepy-looking mansion, where she has to survive a supernatural threat over the course of one endless night and eventually ends up covered in gore and viscera? If I had a nickel for every time a horror movie directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka Radio Silence) came out in the last five years with that exact same premise, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but you know how the rest of the meme goes. If this past weekend's "Abigail" triggered a nagging feeling of déjà vu, well, that's probably because the vampire movie packing a nasty bite (you can read /Film's review by Bj Colangelo here) shares quite a bit of DNA with the directing duo's previous movie, 2019's "Ready or Not."
Apparently, the creative team decided to lean into those similarities even more.

Two years ago, it was neon yellow roller blades and coordinating skating costumes for Barbie and Ken that showed up on Venice Beach in Los Angeles, drumming up excitement for what became a blockbuster hit. This year, it’s apes on horseback.
20th Century Film sent horse handlers dressed as monkeys to the iconic California coast in an out-of-the-box marketing effort for their upcoming movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
On Monday, the studio’s president, Steve Asbell, reshared a video of the event on X, formerly Twitter, writing, “We out here opening up an entirely new front on the CGI vs. practical effects twitter debate!”

On Monday April 22, 20th Century Studios’ all-new action-adventure spectacle, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, made a trip to Venice Beach to get some sun, catch some waves and promote the film to onlookers lucky enough to be there. The apes on horseback was a clever idea and looked very reminiscent of the original 1968 film Planet Of The Apes.
The film opens in movie theaters globally on May 10, 2024, and will be available in IMAX®, Dolby Cinema®, 4Dx, and premium screens everywhere. Be among the first to see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on the big screen at the early access screening on May 8th.

"Long before your elders, there was a time when humans and apes lived side-by-side. Impossible as that may seem..." 20th Century Studios has unveiled a making of featurette for the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes movie directed by Wes Ball. In the video, Ball and his stars Kevin Durand & Freya Allan talk about world building and setting this in a distant future where our planet has become a full jungle. It takes place years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). Many ape clans have emerged in the oasis to which Caesar led his fellow apes, while humans have regressed. One new ape leader prevents the teachings of Caesar in order to enslave other clans while in search of the last traces of a secret technology. Starring Owen Teague as Cornelius, the son of Caesar, with Freya Allan, Peter Macon, Eka Darville, Kevin Durand,...

If you are a horror fan then you might have heard about the director duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who gave us brilliant horror films like 2022’s Scream and 2019’s Ready or Not and now they are back with their new and even campier horror film Abigail. Written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, the new horror film is a reimagining of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters film Dracula’s Daughter and it follows the story of a group of kidnappers who are told to kidnap the daughter of a very powerful man and keep her in the house for 24 hours, but they quickly realize that the daughter might not be what she seems. It’s a close contest at the domestic box office, with the opening day gross of Universal’s ballerina vampire film “Abigail” leading Lionsgate’s fellow new release “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and the second frame of A24’s dystopian thriller “Civil War.”
“Abigail” earned $4 million from 3,384 theaters across its opening day and preview screenings, making it the top performer of the weekend so far. But, after factoring out the $1 million that the horror film earned from screenings before Friday, it comes up behind A24’s “Civil War,” which was actually the top grosser for April 19, taking in roughly $3.3 million.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” fired off about $3.7 million from 2,845 locations — a figure that includes $1.45 million across earlier preview screenings. All three films are eyeing weekend grosses in the low-teens or high-single-digits.

This article contains massive spoilers for "Abigail."
"Abigail" features a group of six mercenaries holding the eponymous girl (Alisha Weir) hostage in a manor. Who's really in the mousetrap here, though?
The trailer gave it all away, but Abigail is a vampire and has brought this group of six together for a feast — one they won't be leaving. It's like the inversion of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's previous mansion survival thriller, "Ready or Not." In that one, Grace (Samara Weaving), recently married into the wealthy Le Domas family, has to dodge her new in-laws as they play the most dangerous game. In "Abigail," a single, seemingly fragile girl hunts a group of people.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett previously directed "Scream" V and VI (Barrera starred in those movies before she was fired from "Scream" VII for pro-Palestine posts); "Abigail" inherits the meta-horror touch of "Scream." When the characters find out what Abigail is,...

Set almost 300 years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will introduce an entirely new world of characters, including Proximus Caesar, the latest villain of the long-running franchise.
Kevin Durand, who plays Proximus Caesar, spoke with GamesRadar about his character, and while he admits that “he’s the baddie,” he doesn’t want to describe him as an out-right villain. “It’s coming down to, you know, homosapiens or apes and obviously he’s on the side of the apes, so he’s willing to do whatever needs to happen, by any means necessary, to ensure a future for apekind,” Durand said. “From the perspective of the narrative, he’s definitely the baddie but yeah, when you watch the movie, you’re like, ‘Well, was he really that bad?’ I mean, he’s definitely narcissistic, but, you know, he...

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains major spoilers for the ending of “Abigail.”]
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s latest horror outing, “Abigail,” comes with plenty of surprises — pint-sized ballerina vampires, double crosses galore, and a lot of exploding bodies — but the biggest of all might be its somewhat happy ending.
A modern spin on the classic “Dracula’s Daughter,” the film follows a group of rag-tag criminals who are tasked with kidnapping (and holding overnight) the young daughter of a local criminal mastermind. Too bad for them that their charge, played by Alisha Weir, isn’t a normal little girl: she’s also a vicious vampire who is (understandably) quite pissed off about her abduction.
By the time the film wraps up, Abigail has chomped her way through most of the crew, offing each of them in surprising (and splashy!) ways. Except for Barrera’s Joey, who has served as something of a protector to the youngster throughout the film. After the dust (blood?...

Dancing ballet en Pointe is arguably one of the hardest styles of dance to perfect. It takes years of training and rigorous dedication to master the move, and even still, without the support of pointe shoes, the body alone is not enough to withstand the pressure of the weight of a full human on such a small surface area. Stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before: Some criminals abduct a rich guy’s child and demand a hefty sum to give the youngster back. Spring has been filled with scares, like Sydney Sweeney’s “Immaculate,” the “Omen” prequel “First Omen” and the talk-show thriller “Late Night With the Devil” in recent weeks. Now the vampiric “Abigail,” from the directors of the last two “Scream” movies, is sinking its teeth into the box office with $1 million in previews so far.
“Abigail” is expected to make between $12 million to $15 million in its opening weekend, edging out last week’s champion, A24’s “Civil War.” Universal’s R-rated horror only cost $28 million, so as long as the first weekend hits the higher end of estimates, it should have no issues making a profit by the end of its theatrical run.

Well, despite the meager box office returns for last year’s big Dracula flicks, Renfield, and The Last Voyage Of The Demeter, this weekend’s new monster movie believes that “You can’t keep a good vampire down”. Really, they just keep popping up, just check out those Christopher Lee Hammer Film classics. Ha, “down for the Count”…and enough of the “groaners”. Although this new flick’s working title was “Dracula’s Daughter”, this chiller isn’t officially connected to the Bram Stoker creation. For one thing, it’s set in today’s world, so a speedy beaten van replaces the horse-drawn carriages. Oh, and it’s got elements of a crime thriller. This tale concerns a “snatch and grab” crew who get more than they bargained for when their target is Abigail.

One could be forgiven for thinking they’d wandered into the wrong theater when Abigail begins. A group of bumbling fools manage to pull it together long enough to follow a child ballerina, Abigail (Alisha Weir), back to her father’s estate, snatch her from her bed, and make a slick getaway back to their cool, calm, collected employer, Lambert (Giancarlo Esposito). In exchange for $7 million apiece, all they need to do is babysit the frightened Abigail in a different estate until Lambert negotiates with her father for a ransom. It sounds like easy money until Abigail, who seems like she’s forging a makeshift bond with one of her kidnappers, blurts out through tears, “I’m sorry for everything that’s going to happen to you.”
Right around then is when the rollercoaster that is Abigail starts its delirious, grisly descent into hell. That is, when it becomes abundantly...

We typically think of any actor who has appeared in movies and television as having it made, but that’s not the case for most working actors. In fact, before Giancarlo Esposito landed the role of Gus Fring on Breaking Bad, he was so broke that he was considering arranging his own murder for the life insurance money.
While speaking on Sirius Xm’s Jim & Sam show, Giancarlo Esposito revealed that the year before Breaking Bad, he was in dire financial straits and desperately looking for a way out. “My way out in my brain was…’Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?’” Esposito said. “My wife had no idea why I was asking this stuff. I started scheming. If I got somebody to knock me off, death by misadventure, [my kids] would get the insurance. I had four kids. I wanted them to have a life.
