The sci-fi horror film M3GAN (watch it Here) was a box office success when it was released last year, earning $181 million at the global box office on a budget of $12 million and spawning a sequel that is set to reach theatres in May of 2025. A lot of people had fun replicating the AI doll’s dance moves on TikTok… but how many people are such big fans of M3GAN that they’d be willing to spend $495 to buy a life-size replica of the doll? The collectible makers at Neca are about to find out, because they have created life-size replicas of M3GAN and are selling them for $494.99. You can check out the product page at This Link. M3GANs will start shipping out by the end of the year.

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here, get a copy Here) was such a financial success when it reached theatres in January of last year, it didn’t even take Universal Pictures and production companies Blumhouse and Atomic Monster two weeks to announce that they’d be re-teaming for a sequel, with M3GAN 2.0 being scheduled to reach theatres on January 17, 2025… but now the release plan has changed. Instead of trying to replicate the success the first film had in January, Universal Pictures has announced that they’re delaying M3GAN 2.0. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s release has been pushed back four months, to May 16, 2025.
Based on a story crafted by produced James Wan, M3GAN was directed by Gerard Johnstone from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant). The film has the following synopsis: She’s more than just a toy. She’s part of the family.

When released at the cinema earlier this year, M3gan was certainly promoted perfectly. The M3gan ‘dance’ featured in the trailer became a bit of a viral hit, and alongside mainly positive reviews, helped the movie make over $175 million at the box office – a huge profit. Now releasing on digital and Blu-ray is a new unrated version.
The story is pretty basic but that’s all it needs to be. A toy company builds a life-like doll that is sold to be a child’s friend as much as it is their toy. But before it is even officially released on the market, the Beta version of the doll is used by the designer’s niece and it soon starts to take on a life of its own.

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here) was cut down and had some moments reshot so it could achieve a PG-13 rating for its theatrical release, but the unrated cut of the movie has since been given a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release (order a copy Here)… and during an interview with USA Today, star Allison Williams revealed there’s a certain unrated moment that makes her sick to her stomach.
Williams said, “The unrated version is a lot of fun, if you have the stomach for it.” When asked if there was a specific scene that makes her squirm, she replied, “Oh, my God. It should be when a child perishes, but at one point, someone’s face loses a fight with a pressure washer and it starts to peel off. Every bit as outrageously entertaining as horror fans would expect from Housebound director Gerard Johnstone, Malignant writer Akela Cooper, and producers James Wan and Jason Blum, M3GAN danced into theaters the first week of January.
With a persuasive marketing campaign led by a buzzy trailer and a strong social media presence, the film performed beyond expectations, grossing $173.4 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. A sequel, M3GAN 2.0, was swiftly put into development for a January 2025 release.
Until then, viewers can now enjoy both the theatrical and unrated cuts of M3GAN on Blu-ray. The release also carries three making-of featurettes: “New Vision of Horror,” “Bringing Life to M3GAN,” and “Getting Hacked.” Despite running a scant 14 minutes in total, they pack in soundbites from a wide array of cast and crew members.

About two months ago, and only twelve days after the sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here) reached theatres, it was announced that the sequel M3GAN 2.0 will be getting a January 17, 2025 theatrical release. Now ComicBook.com has caught up with director Gerard Johnstone to get a status update on the sequel – and during their talk, Johnstone said he’s excited to try to replicate the success of the first film.
Johnstone told ComicBook.com, “All I can say is that I’m here in L.A. and been thinking about it, working on it, and I’m just catching up with them this week to talk about it and do a debrief. It’s really important to do a debrief on the first movie, like a post-game analysis, and look at what worked and how we can do it again. I mean, Jesus Christ, it’s difficult to replicate the success.

Now here's something even a killer doll could sing and dance to. Mere months after the horror-comedy "M3GAN" came to theaters and swept the world of its collective feet with its brutally macabre, yet weirdly compelling story of a slightly too-clingy murderous android, fans are about to get the chance to relive all the thrills and scares through its official vinyl release. The popular record label Waxwork Records has unveiled their newest must-have release: the official "M3GAN" soundtrack from BAFTA-nominated composer Anthony Willis ("Promising Young Woman"), featuring exclusive artwork inspired by the film from artist Susi Vilchez, two colorful vinyl discs, and even more goodies for the vinyl collector nerds out there.
Directed by Gerard Johnstone from a script by Akela Cooper and James Wan, "M3GAN" stars Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey, and Stephane Garneau-Monten. The vinyl set is currently available...

If you thought the PG-13 version of "M3GAN" was mouthy, you might want to cover your ears for the unrated cut, now available on Peacock. Shortly after the surprisingly touching horror comedy hit theaters, director Gerard Johnstone and screenwriter Akela Cooper both made it known that the original script was gorier than what was shown in theaters, and teased the possibility of an unrated cut as much of the original gore was already filmed but edited out for a PG-13 release. Luckily, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures made the brilliant decision to release the gorier cut of "M3GAN" on Peacock, which is now available to stream.
There are some definite differences between the two films, some more noticeable than others, and may help make your decision whether to go with the theatrical cut or the new, unrated release. Obvious spoilers ahead, but there are the all of differences between the two versions of "M3GAN.

Say hello to M3GAN, the lifelike companion that levels up the horrors of “Chucky” and “Annabelle” through the anxieties of AI.
“M3GAN” follows roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) who gifts a life-size AI doll to her 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw) after a tragedy suddenly puts Cady’s guardianship in Gemma’s hands. Though Cady and M3GAN hit it off as best friends, Gemma begins to worry if she has created something — or someone — too powerful to be stopped.
The highly anticipated flick also made a splash with a mesmerizing viral dance sequence — which was given an encore performance with eight M3GANs during its December premiere.

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here) was originally going to receive an R rating, until the filmmakers decided they should do some reshoots to achieve a PG-13 rating. In January, studios typically dump their less-than-stellar movies in theaters, hoping to make a little bit of money back, or to take the tax write-off and move on. When the "M3GAN" trailer dropped, it looked promising, but alarms started ringing after the studio slapped it with a PG-13 rating. Luckily, "M3GAN" is that rare January release that delivers on its premise and then some. It's a crowd-pleasing sci-fi, thriller, and comedy hybrid that leans a little more on laughs than scares, but that's precisely what makes it so much fun.

In a recent interview, M3GAN (read our review Here) director Gerard Johnstone discussed the reshoots that were done to earn the film a PG-13 rating, saying he felt that the PG-13 scenes were actually more effectively troubling than the R-rated moments they replaced. But in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, screenwriter Akela Cooper (who previous wrote the slasher Malignant for producer James Wan) indicated that she preferred the bloodier, deadlier version of the story – and she’s hoping to see an unrated cut of M3GAN on home video.
When asked how gory her M3GAN script was, Cooper replied, “No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it. There should be an unrated version at some point. … I heard it is on the books. But yes, it was way gorier.

Gerard Johnstone's new film "M3GAN," a violent, wicked, enjoyable hoot of a film, cribs a lot of its images and plot points from films that came before. It bears a strong resemblance to Lars Klevberg's 2019 remake of "Child's Play," as well as to Wes Craven's goofy 1986 robo-thriller "Deadly Friend." The M3GAN of the title is a hyperintelligent robotic child that is being developed as a high-tech prototype toy by the brilliant engineer Gemma (Allison Williams). When Gemma loses her sister and brother-in-law in a car accident, she becomes the willing-but-not-really-attentive guardian of her nine-year-old niece Cady (Violet McGraw). Gemma uses the presence of a child in her home to field test M3GAN, and the robot quickly becomes a tender, ersatz parent for Cady. Wan explains how the idea for M3GAN came about – “Annabelle meets Terminator” was the general concept! – while Williams discusses working with an animatronic co-star. Williams also touches upon her love for horror, and what keeps bringing her back to the genre.

“‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we did a killer-doll movie that was Annabelle meets The Terminator? Instead of being a supernatural film, we thought it would be great to do a ‘technology gone awry’ version of that,” James Wan says.
From the most prolific minds in horror—James Wan, the filmmaker behind the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, and Blumhouse, the producer of the Halloween films, The Black Phone and The Invisible Man—comes a fresh new face in terror. Hoping to take the sub-horror killer doll genre to new heights, producers James Wan and Jason Blum have teamed on what they hope to be a modern technology-infused combo somewhere along the lines of Annabelle meets The Terminator. Short of literally doing that, they have cooked up the latest Blumhouse fright picture, M3GAN, which for the most part follows a formula but shakes it up just enough to have strong appeal — especially for the teen-girl audience that gravitates to these PG13-safe kind of movies.
Although it is all entirely predictable, there is some fun entertainment to be had here as the creators including director Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) and writer Akela Cooper working from a story she devised with Wan, have serviced the idea with some very funny ideas that even have the truly creepy title character dancing her way into murder, as well as singing lullabies...

The title character of “M3GAN,” a slyly preposterous and also somewhat clever satirical sci-fi horror film, is a beautiful creepy android doll from hell who doesn’t look like other sinister movie playthings. Her placid soft features — the oversize light gray eyes, the smooth alabaster skin, the mouth that grins, pouts, and signals approval or displeasure — have been enhanced with a heavy layer of digital effects, but there’s a real actor under there named Amie Donald, and that helps to place this humanoid in her own uncanny valley. You might say that M3GAN, as a character, achieves the apotheosis of dollhood. She seems completely fake and completely real at the same time.
Gemma (Allison Williams), a robotics engineer, works for the Funki Toy company, where she spends her time designing gizmos like PurrpetualPetz, a programmed fuzzball that eats, poops, and makes snarky comments. But Gemma has bigger dreams.

There are some horror fans who seem to be upset that the upcoming sci-fi thriller M3GAN – which reaches theatres on January 6th – has been given a PG-13 rating, feeling that the movie would be better if it sported an R. But while speaking with Total Film and Games Radar+, director Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) said he thinks the reshoots they did to make sure the movie would secure a PG-13 actually made scenes more disturbing.
Johnstone said, “Making it PG-13 was something that happened after the fact, but it was always so close to PG-13 anyway. It seemed kind of a mistake not to embrace it. I even remember thinking early on, ‘This could be PG-13, and some of my favorite films like Drag Me to Hell are PG-13.’ So we made the decision to go PG-13 and actually reshot a couple of things. What I was really stoked about is...

Word leaked out more than a month ago that Universal Pictures is so happy with the upcoming sci-fi thriller M3GAN and the positive response to the film’s trailer that they’re already talking sequel – even though M3GAN won’t reach theatres until January 6th. For his part, producer James Wan isn’t so quick to start pondering a follow-up… but he told The Hollywood Reporter that he has thought about the “bigger world” around the title character, so there are places for a sequel to go.
When asked if it’s true that Universal wants a M3GAN sequel already, Wan said, “Well, my answer to that is I am very superstitious, and I don’t like to talk about sequels before the first film is even out. But like any of the movies I make, I always think of a bigger world. I don’t just think of that...

It was a real M3GAN-palooza last night in Hollywood.
Universal Pictures rolled out the black carpet in front of Tcl Chinese Theatre for the world premiere of Blumhouse’s next horror title, M3GAN. The Gerard Johnstone film centers on a brilliant toy company roboticist, played by Allison Williams, who fast-tracks a secret invention after a tragedy makes her the guardian of her 8-year-old niece, Cady, played by Violet McGraw. Produced by Blumhouse and James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, Malignant), M3GAN‘s wild official trailer took the horror world by storm last week, at the time set to release in theaters on January 13, 2023. That date has changed, however, with Deadline reporting this week that you’ll now be able to welcome M3GAN into the family on January 6, 2023.
If you missed it, you can watch the M3GAN trailer down below.
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.
When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent.
