- In his books - "The Secret Happiness of Marilyn Monroe" and "To Norma Jeane With Love, Jimmie" - he claims he and Monroe were in love and would have lived happily ever after had not dreams of stardom lured her away. By contrast, Monroe always maintained theirs was a marriage of convenience, foisted upon them by her guardian, Grace Goddard, who paid Dougherty to take the then-Norma Jeane Baker out on dates.
