Unlike other Marvel Studios films so far, Thor has gone beyond the confines of Earth and brought a cosmic world from the comics to the big screen.
It was a challenge for Kenneth Branagh to create otherworldly realms that would not only feel in keeping with the earthly settings that are also in the film, but with the other movies in the superhero franchise.
They need to feel cohesive because all the heroes - Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury - will be sharing the screen in next year's The Avengers. All of them need to feel like they inhabit the same reality.
The end result worked, introducing Asgard, Jotunheim, interdimensional portals, gods and giants in a way that slots seamlessly with the Marvel movieverse. And it seems to be connecting with audiences too, as Thor stays atop the box office in the USA...
