Coachella cleared out of Indio, California’s Empire Polo Fields, after two music-filled weekends so that the country festival Stagecoach could take over the grounds. The bill for this weekend’s event is stacked with generation-spanning performers, but two in particular seem to be cooking something up for the occasion. Just before opening night, Post Malone shared a snippet teaser of a potential collaboration with Morgan Wallen. Both artists are scheduled to appear at Stagecoach on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Like him or not, Morgan Wallen is one of the biggest music artists in the world at the moment, in any genre. The country singer’s relatively young career has been a roller-coaster ride, to say the least, from the genuinely inspired to the boneheaded, and, in one case, shameful. Here’s a closer look at the major times the Sneedville, Tennessee, native has made waves with his music, his actions, or his words.

Post Malone’s country streak is still going strong. On Wednesday night, the musician took the stage at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville for a surprise performance during radio and television personality Bobby Bones’ annual Million Dollar Show concert. His contribution to the country-centric set was an acoustic cover of Hank Williams’ 1952 record “Honky Tonk Blues.”
“Well, I left my home down on the rural route / I told my paw I’m going steppin’ out / And get the honky-tonk blues,” Malone sang, strumming the song on guitar. His appearance rounded...

When Hardy dropped the Joe Diffie-themed third volume of his Hixtape series on Friday, he did so with an army of country cameos: Blake Shelton, Chris Young, Clint Black, Darius Rucker, Hailey Whitters, and Koe Wetzel all turn up on various tracks. But it’s the inclusion of Toby Keith that’s the most poignant. His appearance on “Ships That Don’t Come In,” with Luke Combs, is his final studio performance before his death in February.

Post Malone has made himself an indispensable guest vocalist lately. The Texas musician, who released his own album Austin last year, is showing up on the two biggest LPs of the year. In May, he’ll appear on “Fortnight,” the opening track of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poet’s Department, and now fans can hear him dueting with Beyoncé on “Levii’s Jeans.”
The song, off her new album Cowboy Carter, sees the Texas natives joining forces to pay tribute to Levi’s, a denim brand made famous by cowboys.

Ever since his CMA Awards performance with Morgan Wallen and Hardy, Post Malone has seemingly been bopping around Nashville. He was spotted at Duke’s bar in East Nashville earlier this month and is reportedly holed up somewhere in town working on his long-anticipated country project. He also collaborated with Wallen in the studio during CMAs week, at least according to a photo that Nashville songwriter Ernest posted of himself with Posty and Wallen.

Post Malone made his CMA Awards performance debut alongside Morgan Wallen and Hardy. The musicians showcased a medley of Nineties country songs by Joe Diffie, including “John Deere Green” and “Pickup Man.” Diffie, a pillar of traditional country music, died in 2020 at 61 from complications related to Covid-19.
The choice to perform Diffie songs is tied to a new mixtape being released by Hardy. Hixtape Vol. 3: Difftape unites the “Truck Bed” singer with Wallen and Malone, and features updated versions of Diffie’s “John Deere Green” and “Pickup Man.”

Monday’s episode of The Voice teed up at least one Blind Audition that qualified as “out of this world.” In fact, when Nini Iris was done, a gobsmacked Niall Horan had to ask, “What planet do you come from?” But, would his enthusiastic entreaties sway the standout to join his team and not John Legend, Gwen Stefani or Reba McEntire’s? The 2022 CMA Awards were a mostly predictable affair with a few pleasant little surprises — and we’re so grateful for it. Between the maelstrom known as Ye, the upending of the already chaotic Twitter, and the high stakes of the midterms, there’s enough wacky shit afoot without having to endure some stupid drama unfolding on country music’s biggest night. Sorry Garth, but thank God for answered prayers.

When it came time for Joshua Hedley to begin work on his second album, the polished Nineties country homage Neon Blue, the neo-traditionalist had only one guiding principle: make a record to be played on a pontoon boat.

Chris Young had just released the new single “Raised on Country” in January 2019 when he received a text from Joe Diffie. Young, in his drawling Tennessee baritone, name-checks Diffie in the chorus to the genre-referencing song, crediting the “John Deere Green” singer with giving him his “honky-tonk attitude.”
Diffie was texting to thank Young for the gesture of respect and for shining a light on his legacy. A little over a year later, Diffie died from Covid-19. It was a tragic loss not just to country music but to Chris Young’s very being.

Keith Whitley would have turned 66 this year. Born July 1st, 1955, in Ashland, Kentucky, the country singer died in 1989 from alcohol poisoning. He was 33. An exhibit dedicated to the performer opened at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2019, and it’s not a stretch to include him in any conversation about future induction into the hall.

The 2020 CMA Awards were held earlier this week, pandemic be damned, with several tributes to country legends that were lost this year, including a Charlie Daniels medley, renditions of Joe Diffie and Kenny Rogers songs, and a Mac Davis’ “In the Ghetto.” Notably absent were mentions of the late John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver — figures who were less in the spotlight than the stars that the CMAs chose to recognize, but who nonetheless made immeasurable contributions to country music.

In June 1997, singer-songwriter Billy Yates, whose hard-country vocals were reminiscent of Keith Whitley, released his self-titled debut album, populated with classic-leaning honky-tonk tunes all co-written by the Missouri native. Five years earlier, one of Yates’ most famous tunes became a minor radio hit and a major music-video event for country legend George Jones and a group of Jones’ disciples. “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair” was a rallying cry aimed at country radio, whose narrow playlists were squeezing out older and more traditional country acts in favor of young pop-country hitmakers.

Most of Nashville’s country-music community should have been in Las Vegas by now. The 55th Acm Awards were to be held Sunday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, with trophies handed out, nominees performing, and 12 million or so viewers tuning in to CBS’s three-hour live broadcast. But like many other seemingly untouchable tentpoles — from SXSW to the Tony Awards — the coronavirus pandemic derailed those plans, leaving the Academy of Country Music, CBS, and Dick Clark Productions, the longtime producers of the ACMs, without a show.

Diffie, a member of the Grand Ole Opry for 25 years, is a household name to any country fan who came of age listening to the format in the 1990s.

Nineties country music nostalgia has reached its peak with the announcement that Hot Country Knights, a faux band fronted by a costumed Dierks Bentley, has signed a record deal with Universal Music Group’s Nashville division.
Bentley, who also releases his solo albums through Umg Nashville, started playing one-off gigs with the group in 2015 and masquerades as Douglas “Doug” Douglason, a showboating, ill-tempered former adult film actor who longs for the days when Joe Diffie ruled the country charts. Joining Bentley are members of his live band, each with his...

Joe Diffie makes a triumphant return to the honky tonk with his new song, “As Long As There’s a Bar,” which premieres today. The lively, hard-twanging tune is the singer’s latest release from an upcoming album and has some echoes of his Nineties commercial peak, when he extolled his affection for barrooms in “Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox (If I Die).”
“I thought ‘Hey, that song did good. Let’s do this one too!'” says Diffie, laughing. “I like it because I think a lot of people feel that way.
