Here's a Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre DVD releases for the months of February and March 2013.
The Blob (1958) Criterion Collection Blu-ray & DVD Available Now
This entertaining low-budget favorite gets some well-deserved respect from the folks at Criterion. A gelatinous creature from outer space begins to devour the inhabitants of a small town. Each time it consumes a new body, it grows bigger. A couple of teens (including the wooden Steve McQueen) attempt to warn the town and save the population from certain blech! Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. directs the mayhem with a sure hand while Bart Sloane's great special effects still pack a punch. Followed by the bizarre comedy sequel, Son of Blob, in the early ’70s (directed by Larry Hagman!) and a great, underrated remake in 1988 by Chuck Russell.
Special Features:
* New high-definition digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
* Two audio commentaries: one by producer Jack H. Harris...

You remember the VHS cover: a zombie, clawing its way out of a TV set. And that title? Totally 80’s, totally in blue neon with drippy, gruesome, haunted house lettering: The Video Dead, my friends. Heck it used to be on USA every Saturday growing up, hawked by Rhonda Shear or Commander USA. Well, as you know, it’s not on DVD ... yet.
Cut to: Mr. Chris MacGibbon — ghoul about town, trying to do the right thing, giving us another shot of 80’s zombies, finally. I had the pleasure of throwing a few questions Chris’ way and if we all play our cards right, we’ll be slipping The Video Dead right next to our copies of Humaniods From the Deep. Why? Because we can, and we’ll have Chris to thank for it.
Heather Buckley: When was the first time you watched The Video Dead?
Chris MacGibbon: I first...

One of the most prolific writers in the history of television received a well-deserved honor today, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Though he's written for many shows like My Favorite Martian and The Red Skelton Show, Sherwood Schwartz will always be remembered for creating two incredibly successful sitcoms, Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch. Though they only ran for three and five seasons respectively, they continue to be very popular in reruns and have spawned numerous reunions and spin-offs.
At the event, Dawn Wells (Gilligan's Mary Ann) and Florence Henderson (Brady Bunch's Carol) both spoke about their great appreciation and admiration for Schwartz. Christopher Knight (Pete) and Susan Olsen (Cindy) were also in attendance to represent the Brady brood. Patrick Denver (son of Gilligan star Bob Denver) was there as were many of Schwartz's family members and friends (including Let's Make a Deal game show legend Monty Hall...
