Director and screenwriter Michael Radford, who won BAFTA awards and Oscar nominations for his Italian language film “Il Postino: The Postman,” is set to co-direct “The Princess of Kapurthala” (aka “La Princesa De Kapurthala”). Directing duties on the 20th century romance will shared with Spanish filmmaker Manuel Estudillo (“El Eden Perdido”).

The greatgrandson of an Indian maharajah has come out against the book upon which Penelope Cruz plans to base a movie dealing with romantic aspects of the maharajah's life. The film, Passion India, based on a best-selling novel by Spanish author Javier Moro, is set in the early 1900s and tells the story of Jagatjit Singh, the Maharajah of Kapurthala, (a province in North India's Punjab state) and Anita Delgado, a Spanish beauty whom the king first met in Madrid when she was only 18. They later married, becoming his fifth wife, and she changed her name to Maharani Prem Kaur and moved to India. But Jagatjit Singh's greatgrandson, Tikka Shatrujit Singh, has strongly objected to the book. In an interview Friday, New Delhi-based Singh said, "Moro has claimed that his book is fictional but it is based on real characters. Moreover, he did not get approval from me or my family. I am now planning to take legal action."...
