Earlier this month, Deadline kicked off its Hollywood Contraction series by checking in with the acting community to see whether opportunities have picked up since the end of the strikes.
The response wasn’t so positive. On top of fewer shows in the works and the disappearance of pilot season, the available acting gigs are paying less than they used to amid rising cost of living, making it hard for many working actors to afford their rent or mortgage and support their families.
So we went to the front lines to the people who would know best — casting directors– to ask about the contraction going on in the industry, and whether the fears are justified. Though just about everybody acknowledges that change is happening, they also remain optimistic about the future.

Taryn Manning’s audition for the Britney Spears starrer Crossroads was so good it made director Tamra Davis nervous.
“She was picking something on her arm, and it looked like it might start bleeding,” recalls Davis of a casting session for the 2002 road trip drama, written by soon-to-be TV mogul Shonda Rhimes. “I thought ‘Oh my, she’s too much, this girl.’ But at the same time, she was the girl.”
Manning was vying for the role of Mimi, a trailer park teen with dreams of moving to Los Angeles to make it as a singer. Manning so nailed the mannerisms and soul of a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who longed for stardom that Davis also felt confused. “I remember quietly telling [casting directors Kim Davis-Wagner and Justine Arteta] that while she was amazing, I needed a real actress. When Kim Davis-Wagner and Justine Arteta signed on to cast the television adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s blockbuster rock ’n’ roll novel Daisy Jones & The Six, they knew they were up against the pressure of re-creating the magic of a beloved piece of IP — but they were also up against A Star Is Born. The Lady Gaga-starring musical drama hit theaters in 2018, and the industry was still captivated with the idea of seeing pop stars on the big screen. “The thinking was, there have to be other musicians [like Lady Gaga] who could be that good at acting,” says Arteta. “We knew that was possible, but really rare.”

"The Bad Batch" promises to be yet another genre-bending film from director Amirpour, who burst from Sundance onto the indie scene and won a Gotham Award for her subversive and darkly witty B&W debut "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night." Plot details remain under wraps, but this "dystopian love story set in a Texas wasteland" will be written and directed by Amirpour, and produced by Vice (who also headed up "Girl Walks") and Annapurna Pictures, which is spearheaded by whip-smart Megan Ellison. Ellison will produce alongside Vice’s Danny Gabai and Sina Sayyah. Annapurna’s Sammy Scher will be the executive overseeing the day-to-day development and production of the project while Vice’s Shane Smith and Eddy Moretti will Executive Produce. Justine Baddeley and Kim Davis-Wagner are currently casting the project. As with their previous collaboration, A24's mind-bending"Spring Breakers," Vice and Annapurna will work together to.
