For the third year in a row—and fourth in the last five—White Horse Pictures finds itself in the middle of the Emmy horse race.
In 2020, the White Horse production The Apollo, about the legendary performing arts venue in Harlem, earned Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Last year, White Horse’s The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart was nominated for six Emmys, winning one. This year it’s back in contention with Lucy and Desi, Amy Poehler’s documentary about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, which is nominated for half a dozen Emmys—more than any other documentary.
“I’m ecstatic,” says White Horse Pictures partner Jeanne Elfant Festa of the Emmy recognition. She’s a producer of the film, along with Poehler, Mark Monroe and White Horse co-founder and principal Nigel Sinclair. “It’s an honor, it’s a thrill. We have the best...

Beloved American ventriloquist Shari Lewis and her popular sock puppet Lamb Chop will be the subject of a new documentary feature from White Horse Pictures and MoJo Global Arts.
“Shari & Lamb Chop” will be directed by Emmy-nominated Lisa D’Apolito, director of “Love, Gilda,” the documentary about the late Saturday Night Live comedian Gilda Radner.
As a young female ventriloquist with big aspirations, Shari Lewis was searching for a voice who could say things that a young woman in the 1950s could not, and found it in a sock puppet named Lamb Chop. The duo debuted on CBS children’s television series “Captain Kangaroo” in 1956 and went on to attain cultural icon status in the U.S. by the end of the 20th century.
Lewis died in 1998. The documentary will examine her journey, which included winning 13 Emmys and a Peabody and authoring 60 children’s books, and her impact on children’s...

Chicago – It’s always something, as the great Gilda Radner often said (through her character Roseanne Roseannadanna), and the documentary “Love, Gilda” is about all her somethings… her childhood, the early comedy days, the rise through “Saturday Night Live” and her succumbing to the dread disease of cancer. She had it all, did it all, but as always “it” could not save her, and eventually us.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The title refers to her extraordinary archive of letters and journal entries, which chronicle her life and times, but which also coincided with the second wave of feminism and the female comedy force that followed, and Gilda was a force all of her own with the original 1975 cast of “Saturday Night Live.” Often these types of celebrities emerge from their most famous performances, but Gilda had just as fascinating a non-celebrity life before the fame, with a circuitous route to her notoriety. Yep,...

When you think of Gilda Radner, are you overcome with a melancholy half-smile? Do you chuckle when you think of her SNL characters, Roseanne Roseannadanna or "Baba Wawa"? If so, Lisa Dapolito’s new documentary Love, Gilda is for you. Though well assembled from hours and hours of vintage footage, as well as newly conducted talking-head interviews with those who knew Radner or were influenced by her, Love, Gilda immediately falls into the trap of “fan service”. In other words, the many, impassioned explanations of Radner’s comedic greatness are reinforcements of what the viewer is assumed to already know, as opposed to making her legacy accessible to non-fans and later generations. Yes, Gilda Radner was a late 1970’s pop culture phenomenon, and has since inspired...

With the year’s end “light at the end of the tunnel” in sight, 2018’s parade of distinguished feature documentaries marches on with another “crowd-pleaser” bringing up the rear. Cinemas have been host to truly exceptional works of non-fiction filmmaking. This week’s release joins the impressive list of the “celebrity showbiz profile” sub-genre that includes the box office hit Won’T You Be My Neighbor along with Whitney, McQueen, and Quincy. Though music doesn’t play as big a role in this subject’s life as in several of these films, she made her greatest cultural impact on television, just as Neighbor’s Fred Rogers. Oh, and her works were much more “adult” in nature, While Rogers was a daytime TV king to countless kids, she was the first real “queen of late-night TV comedy”. And while she’s been gone for nearly three decades, her influence seems to be felt now,...

Typically Tribeca Film Festival press luncheons preview their annual lineup, with a reminder of the event’s social and economic impact to downtown New York in the years post-9/11. However, Tribeca co-boss and two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro kicked off this year’s 17th annual event at Thalassa Restaurant by jabbing at his favorite punching bag: President Donald Trump.
“Look at all the Fake News writers here today,” joked Robert De Niro to several laughs.
“The country has had a bad year, and you — the press – have taken a lot of hits. America is being run by a madman who wouldn’t recognize the truth if it came inside a bucket of his beloved Colonel Sanders Fried Chicken,” exclaimed De Niro.
“When he doesn’t like what he hears, he dismisses it by saying it’s un-American and damning it as ‘fake news’. But we know the truth. All...
