On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Let Me Own This Blu-Ray Before I’m Buried in My Official Kiss-Branded Coffin
Few musical acts in American history have done more with less than Kiss. Despite boasting some of the simplest and most uninspired (if occasionally very catchy) songs of the 1970s, the shock rock act built a loyal following and merchandising empire around the novel idea of wearing makeup while singing. Their onstage theatrics and commitment to rock and rolling all night and partying every day — tons of people can do one or the other, but...

In a perfect world, Kiss would have wrapped up the final show of their End of the World tour by inviting former members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss onto the stage for tearful hugs, an end to the bitterness that has consumed the group for decades, and one last rendition of “Rock and Roll All Nite,” giving the inevitable biopic a perfect last scene.
In the world we actually live on, Criss and Frehley were nowhere in sight when Kiss played their (supposed) final show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening.

Sometime around 11 p.m. on Dec. 2, Gene Simmons will walk offstage at Madison Square Garden in New York as the final notes of “Rock and Roll All Nite” echo through the arena, remove his Demon makeup for the last time, and say goodbye to the band he formed five decades ago. It’s easy to be skeptical about this considering nearly every farewell tour in rock history has been bullshit, this is actually the second Kiss goodbye tour, and this isn’t a band known for leaving money on the table,...

Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley is looking to let his music do the talking when it comes to his feud with ex-bandmate Paul Stanley. But, he’s also letting his mouth do the talking, too!
Earlier this year, Stanley told Howard Stern that Kiss would sound like “Piss” if they let original members Frehley and Peter Criss back in the band. Frehley then threatened to spill dirt on Stanley and Gene Simmons if he didn’t get an apology from Stanley. He later reported that Stanley’s response to his demand for an apology was, “Fuck you!”
In a new interview with 93.5 FM Max (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Frehley pointed to his ability to maintain a steady music career following his exit from the band 20 years ago.
“It was hard in the beginning, but now I’ve picked up a lot of steam,” said Frehley, “In fact, I remember … the...

Ever since Kiss announced that they were wrapping up their final tour with two shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, there has been speculation of founding members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss joining the band onstage for a reunion.
In a new interview with Linea Rock (see below), Gene Simmons said that he’s extended multiple invitations to Frehley and Criss, who have both turned down the invites to play with Kiss during the final shows. This comes after a long and tiresome feud between the former members and the current Kiss faction — particularly founding members Simmons and Paul Stanley.
“For the fans — the older, older fans — the ones who’ve been around for 50 years, they’re old, and some of them wanna see Ace and Peter,” Simmons said [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “The newer fans never saw them and they don’t know. But the older fans wonder about Ace and Peter.

While Elvis Presley and Kiss feel like part of two different eras, Elvis was still around to hear the exuberant band before his 1977 death. The members of Kiss have praised the Memphis singer in the past. While Presley never publicly shared support for the band, his stepbrother said the “Heartbreak Hotel” singer became a fan after listening to one of their songs multiple times.

Kiss was formed in New York City in 1973 with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss. The band became famous with early hits, such as “Nothin’ to Lose” and “Firehouse”. Elvis Presley’s stepbrother, Billy Stanley, was a fan of Kiss, and bought their 1975 live album, Alive!. He was listening to it in the basement of Graceland when Elvis came down to hear Stanley’s new obsession.

Ace Frehley recently gave Paul Stanley a week to apologize for a disparaging comment, but apparently all he got back from the Kiss singer-guitarist was a good old-fashioned “Fuck you!”
To quickly recap, last month Stanley told Howard Stern that a reunion with original Kiss members Frehley and Peter Criss would sound like “Piss.” Frehley, appearing on Eddie Trunk’s SiriusXM show last week, threatened to spill “dirt” on Stanley and Gene Simmons if he didn’t get an apology within seven days.
As promised, Frehley returned to Trunk’s show today (April 5th), a week later, with an update. When asked by Trunk if Stanley responded, Frehley said, “Yes, he did, not long after the show was over. I was blindsided by the phone call. … But instead of an apology, I got a five-second phone call which said, ‘Fuck you, Ace. I’m not going to apologize,’ and hung up.

Ace Frehley has blasted back at Paul Stanley after the latter insinuated that a Kiss reunion with the guitarist and drummer Peter Criss would sound like “Piss.”
In a new interview with SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk, the former Kiss axeman gave Stanley an ultimatum: If he doesn’t receive a formal apology within seven days, he’s going to uncover dirt on Stanley and Gene Simmons publicly.
Frehley is referring to inflammatory remarks made by Stanley during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show when Stern asked why Kiss didn’t perform at their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2014.
“They were demanding, quite honestly, that we play with the two original guys, Peter and Ace, and at this point, that would be demeaning to the band, and also would give some people confusion,” Stanley said. “‘Cause if you saw people onstage who looked like Kiss but sounded like that,...

In 1984, a lot of laws about what was and wasn't allowed in children's TV programming began to loosen. Throughout the decade, more and more companies became incredibly brazen about including advertising content directly into their TV shows, transforming many shows into 30-minute commercials for toys. An '80s child would watch a show, knowing they could soon hound their parents to buy them the toy counterparts of their favorite characters. This branding became deeply insidious, and many children of the 1980s grew up with a deep and abiding nostalgia for their favorite toy ads. Artistry, character, writing, storytelling, and mythology were all distant, tertiary concerns during this era, and the bulk of animated shows from the '80s are deeply, deeply terrible as a result.

The ever-touring rock band Kiss announced today that the road will end where it began: New York City. The iconic rockers, including original members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, will play their final show ever this December at Madison Square Garden.
In a joint statement, the band said, “Kiss was born in New York City. On 23rd Street. Half a century ago. It will be a privilege and honor to finish touring at Madison Square Garden, 10 blocks and 50 years from where we first started.”
The final two shows, both at Msg, will take place on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 of this year.
The band’s decision to call it quits has long been expected – the name of their current and final tour is The End of the Road Tour – but there had been some question on whether performances would spill over into 2024.

You don’t have to be friends with the people you make music with – but it helps not to be enemies.
The annals of music history are filled with instances of bandmates whose relationships turned sour, from Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel to Morrissey and Johnny Marr.
In one of modern music’s bitterest feuds, former Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and David Gilmour have spent years exchanging vitriolic words in the press. This week, Polly Samson, ex-Pink Floyd lyricist and wife of David Gilmour, made unsubstantiated allegations against Waters online.
Waters wrote on a social media account that he was “aware of the incendiary and wildly inaccurate comments made about him on Twitter by Polly Samson which he refutes entirely”, and said he is “currently taking advice as to his position”.
Of course, plenty of great music has been made by people who were at personal loggerheads – just ask Fleetwood Mac.

Casablanca Records is one of the most influential music labels in history, but the story of its founder, Neil Bogart, isn't as well-known as it should be. Donna Summer, Parliament, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Isley Brothers, The Village People, Bill Withers, and the rock band Kiss all rose to great heights thanks to Bogart and were signed to the label that would become the most successful independent record company in history. Now, the film "Spinning Gold" looks to transport audiences back to the 1970s, when disco reigned supreme, funk was beginning to pick up steam, and Neil Bogart was on top of the world. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming music producer biopic, and more.

As The Eighties began winding down, Bootsy Collins was in his element during nights on the town in Washington, D.C. Every so often he’d slip into one of the giddy, over-the-top voices heard on Bootsy stompers like “Bootzilla.” And he was living as large as one would expect: “We’re...

Bittersweet endings are anything but rare on television. Likewise, finding Kiss on television -- especially for the aging rockers amongst us -- has been like discovering bubbles in water for the last five decades.

Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning to direct based on story of ’70s glam rock band
A music biopic called “Shout It Out Loud” about legendary rock band Kiss is in the works, and Netflix is nearing a deal to acquire the film package, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Joachim Rønning, the Norwegian director behind “Kon-Tiki,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” will direct the film. Kiss’ Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley will collaborate on the project, which spans the band’s story on stage and off. Ole Sanders wrote the latest draft of the script, with a previous draft coming from W. Blake Harron.
Netflix had no comment. A rep for the band said there are ongoing conversations with Netflix but no agreement has been signed.

The press conference had barely begun when Gene Simmons weighed in with typical bluntness. “This tour and the whole event,” he said, leaning into a microphone, “it is a culmination of more than a decade of our fans being on top of our asses saying we have to do it.”
The “it” was the fantasy of Kiss fans across the globe: a reunion of the original quartet, in full makeup, reviving the songs and stage costumes that had made Kiss one of the all-conquering bands of the Seventies. And on April 16th,...

In time for what they’re dubiously dubbing their “final tour,” Kiss have rolled out KissWorld — The Best of Kiss. Touching on every one of the group’s eras, from makeup to no makeup and back to kabuki, the 20-track compilation amounts to Kiss for beginners. And if an album featuring “Detroit Rock City,” “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Beth” and “Lick It Up” sounds familiar, it should: KissWorld is at least the 12th compilation the group has rolled out.

Founding Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley posted a scathing Facebook message to Gene Simmons on Tuesday, alleging that Simmons’ statements about Frehley’s alcohol abuse over the years cost him millions and that Simmons had groped his wife. After the allegations, he included a threat: “Without a complete and heartfelt apology, an offer to give me my old job back and removing Tommy [Thayer, guitarist] from the throne I created, the shit will hit the fan and they’ll [sic] be no stopping it. It’s on!!!” He concluded the post with an image...

Kiss’ End of the Road tour might be three months away, but that hasn’t stopped them from telling the public what they can expect from the show. In a series of interviews, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have promised an expanded set list and a completely reimagined stage set. “We virtually have thrown out everything that has been on stage for the past 10 years, at least, and created a whole new stage and a whole new show,” Paul Stanley said. “We’re not crawling to the finish line; we’re celebrating.

Kiss recently became the latest in a very long list of rock acts to announce a farewell tour this year. Many fans were probably a little skeptical when they heard the news since, well, Kiss already went on a farewell tour. It happened back in 2000 and kept them on the road for well over a year. They played 142 concerts to fans that all believed they were seeing Kiss for the final time. Here’s video of the group launching the tour with “Detroit Rock City” at the Desert Sky Pavilion in Phoenix,...

A coroner’s report into the death of Vinnie Paul has determined that the Pantera drummer died of a heart condition. Paul was found dead in his Las Vegas home June 22nd at the age of 54.
According to the Clark County Coroner’s Office, Paul suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition which restricts the heart’s ability to pump blood, as well as severe coronary artery disease, Las Vegas’ Ktnv reported.
“Vincent Paul Abbott died from natural causes, specifically, dilated cardiomyopathy,” a rep for the musician said in a statement.

Chicago – Watching a heavy metal band perform during daylight can be a little like watching a horror film with the lights on. The overall performance can sometimes lose a bit of its edge and intensity.
Fortunately that was not the case when the main acts took the stage for the “Chicago Open Air” concert at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. First up in that daylight, on the cool and breezy Friday afternoon of July 14th, 2017 – the first night of the three-day event – was the legendary thrash metal performers Anthrax, followed by the Megadeth, and then in the evening by Rob Zombie and the iconic rockers Kiss.
Anthrax, led by Joey Belladonna’s passion and high velocity vocals, matched the fury from the zealous crowd. The band opened with “Caught in a Mosh,” and bookended their performance with “Indians.” In between, Scott Ian’s shredding guitar, and the band’s fevered...

The 1970s New York music scene produced more than disco movies, they also brought us rock and roll comic book heroes.
The first concert I ever saw was Kiss during their Destroyer tour. My parents had seen some clips of them on the TV and were scared to death. The makeup, the costumes, the pyrotechnics, all the fire-breathing and blood-spitting had them convinced that Kiss was the most wicked, demonic band on Earth (second only to Alice Cooper), and that if I went to the show I’d undoubtedly become addicted to heroin, possessed by the devil, or at the very least be kidnapped. I didn’t bring up the rumor that Kiss was actually an acronym for Knights in Satan’s Service, nor that the possibility of demonic corruption was exactly why I wanted to see the show.
Well, I went and wasn’t sold into slavery.

In 1978, there were two things on the minds of boys ages 5 to 16. Ok, maybe three. They were Kiss, Star Wars, and girls. You pick the order they were in for you personally. I was 6, so girls really hadn't figured into the equation yet.
Girls were on boys' minds for the obvious reasons. Star Wars was popular because it had just been released the year before and blew everyone away with its groundbreaking, never-before-seen special effects and imagery. After only being around since 1973, Kiss was the hottest band in the world because of their shockingly explosive on-stage spectacle and look. They had already released several best-selling studio, live, and solo albums. They had t-shirts, stickers, belt buckles, and everything else you can think of with their logo and likenesses plastered on them. The band even had a comic book that featured the members as superheroes that was published through Marvel Comics.

Chicago – Fresh from his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (along with bandmates Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons and Peter Criss), Paul Stanley of the rock group Kiss stopped by last month at Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville, Ill. to sign his new book “Face the Music: A Life Exposed”.
Paul Stanley met Gene Simmons in the early 1970s, and after an attempt to get another rock group off the ground, solicited a drummer and guitarist through ads in New York City newspapers. This resulted in finding Peter Criss (drums) and Ace Frehley (guitar) to form Kiss. After experimenting with different make-up and character personas, Paul Stanley became the “starchild” in 1973 and Kiss released their first album in 1974. Since then, the iconic band has sold more than 100 million albums (despite critical bashing) with Stanley and Simmons still touring. On Dec. 17, 2013, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Kiss was recently inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame after forty years of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. Unlike other bands, not all of their current and former associates were asked to share the honor. The Hall of Fame only awarded original members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss in the ceremony which took place on April 10, 2014.
Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons were enraged by the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame's decision and refused to perform at the event. How could thirty years of hit records and songs still being played in their concert sets just be ignored? Not only were the two founding members of Kiss irritated by this, but many fans of the band's music past their early makeup days were as well.

New York (AP) — Kiss made up, but its music went unheard. Nirvana used four women rockers to sing Kurt Cobain's songs. And Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band — predictably — turned its honor into a marathon. The three acts were ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Thursday in a colorful induction ceremony at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. They were joined by the blue-eyed soul duo Hall & Oates, British rocker Peter Gabriel, 1970s folkie Cat Stevens and the absent Linda Ronstadt. Nirvana was the emotional centerpiece. The trio rooted in the Seattle-area punk rock scene was voted into the hall in its first year of eligibility. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit like a thunderclap upon its 1991 release, but the band was done after Kurt Cobain committed suicide 20 years ago this month. "Nirvana fans walk up to me every day and say thank you for the music," said Krist Novoselic,...

While celebrating the debut of Kiss's Self-titled album is definitely important, we can't forget an event that gave millions of Americans their first glimpse of the band's unique style and strutting charisma they've become known for over the past forty years. The super group made their first national live appearance for ABC's "In Concert" on March 29th, 1974. The lives of millions of people were about to be forever impacted by a raw rock'n'roll beast.
The beast known as Kiss was fueled by an unbridled energy the individuals in the band gathered within themselves through their onstage personas. The Starchild, the Demon, the Spaceman, and the Catman all worked together in perfect unison when three tracks were recorded on February 19th to be aired the following month. Everything about the performance exuded a tight group of individuals destined for greatness and willing to claw their way to the top of the...

It's hard to believe, but the men of Kiss scored their first Rolling Stone cover this week.
During an interview with senior writer Brian Hiatt, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley chatted about the history of the band and took an in-depth look into the relationships between the former and current members.
Highlights from the band’s interview are as follows. For more, sure to visit Rolling Stone!

On his issues with Gene:
“We’ve always seen each other as brothers. What we seem to be at odds at is how you treat your brother. Gene’s priority, by far, has always been himself. And he’s not one to let anyone else’s feelings or contributions get in the way.”
On the band’s former bandmates:
“I keep thinking about Ace and Peter. ‘What are they doing now? Where are they?’ It’s gotta be close to the end.
