Iggy Pop, Shirley Manson, and Cat Power are a few of the artists who’ve contributed to The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, an upcoming covers compilation honoring the legendary English singer. Before it’s out in full December 8th, Tanya Donelly & The Parkington Sisters have shared their rendition of “This Little Bird.”
Also featuring fellow icons like Peaches, Lydia Lunch, Bush Tetras, Donita Sparks, and more, The Faithful is a benefit album that hits especially close to home: All profits will go directly to assist Faithfull as she recovers from long Covid. Donnelly and the Parkingtons do their forebear justice with their cover of “This Little Bird,” with layered vocal harmonies and delicate, complex string arrangements.
“Marianne’s voice has always been one of my favorite instruments, from childhood through today, and her music and spirit have been life-long inspirations,” Donnelly says in a press release. “I wanted...

Two years ago, Marianne Faithfull told Rolling Stone about her ongoing battle with Covid-19. “It’s terrible,” she said. “I got long-term Covid, where you get better from the virus, but you have leftover [symptoms]. Apparently, they now think that you do get better from long-term Covid; it’s not forever. That is good.”
To help Faithfull with mounting health costs, more than a dozen artists have recorded covers of songs for a benefit album, The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, for her. Cat Power and Iggy Pop teamed to...

I’d recently been absorbed in the deep colors and heartache of Douglas Sirk's melodramas, following on from this I found myself pining for more white picket fence drama, but with a twist. This is where John Waters came back into my world, how I had missed him, so this edition of Notebooks Soundtrack Mix is a sonic ode to a pioneer of perversion. I started back with Polyester (1981) and Serial Mom (1994), which, alongside Gus Van Sant's 1995 To Die For is a double bill I’m always dreaming of. The work of John Waters ramps up the technicolor dreams of Sirk and places them in a camp world of dysfunctional misfits. His work is a reminder to not take things so seriously and that there is a place for everyone in this world which, importantly, includes the poor, repugnant and nasty! Waters is famous for his use of...

Generation C is being invaded by the B-Girls. 80s cult singer Josie Cotton, best known for blurring the angst of both liberals and conservatives with “Johnny Are You Queer?,” sees the science fiction claustrophobia arising from the coronavirus pandemic and wants to help. Cotton joined the Minutemen’s Mike Watt, the Runaways’ Cherie Currie, and Eddie Spaghetti on the song “Flatten the Curve,” to benefit the Jubilee Consortium and the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. Everyone else, she advises to cuddle up with a bad movie. Cotton ventured beyond the valley of the dolls in a “so-bad-they’re-good” movie hunt to accompany this real life B-Movie scenario and re-released Invasion of the B-Girls.
The album title is a twist on the Denis Sanders’ 1973 film Invasion of the Bee Girls, where giant killer bees masquerade as sexy women scientists who kill men for their blood during sex. The New Wave pioneer originally...

The Minutemen’s Mike Watt, the Runaways’ Cherie Currie, Eddie Spaghetti, Josie Cotton and more punk luminaries have teamed for a new Covid-19 benefit song, “Flatten the Curve.” Proceeds from the track will benefit the Jubilee Consortium and the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.
“Flatten the Curve” was organized and produced by manager and musician Bruce Duff, while his Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs bandmate Frank Meyer wrote the tune. In all, 31 musicians contributed to the four-minute ripper, which grapples with the strangeness of social-distancing while still hammering home its necessity: “Hey, you gotta spread the word,...

We're back with another jam-packed edition of Horror Highlights! In today's installment, we give you a preview of Josie Cotton's upcoming album Invasion of the B-Girls, there's an exclusive Q&a with Tiffani Fest, and we have details on a new book called Screaming for Pleasure, a new horror podcast called The Scaredy Cats Horror Show, a deal between Gunpowder & Sky and Circle of Confusion, and Legion M's pop culture face masks:
Josie Cotton's Invasion of the B-Girls:
From the Press Release - “Josie Cotton makes the unlistenable unforgettable,” wrote legendary filmmaker/actor/artist John Waters about the New Wave icon's upcoming album Invasion Of The B-girls on which she covers the theme songs of campy cult films. When you have a quote like that from the supreme King of Cult Classics, you pretty much don’t need to do anything else in life but dig a hole and lie in it.

One of the oldies celebrated by lovers of ’80s fare, Martha Coolidge’s ode to pampered teens in La La Land has aged extremely well. It’s still fairly representative of reality, but the romantic fairy tale angle is what keeps it afloat. Nicolas Cage’s unguarded vulnerability and Deborah Foreman’s infectious smile win the day — we like these kids, even if they’re somewhat idealized.

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!

A musical remake of 1983 romantic comedy Valley Girl is in the pipeline. MGM has started work on a new version of the movie, which starred Deborah Foreman as a sweet but shallow valley girl who hooks up with Hollywood punk Randy (Nicolas Cage). The film featured a New Wave soundtrack including acts such as Modern English, Josie Cotton, the Plimsouls and the Psychedelic Furs. Sean (more)...
