Cleopatra Wong, a kick-ass Interpol agent known to have influenced some of Quentin Tarantino’s movies, is to be revived in an upcoming Asian TV series.
The female action hero was created by The Philippines’ Bobby Suarez (aka George Richardson) and featured in three movies – “They Call Her Cleopatra Wong,” “Dynamite Johnson” and “Devil’s Angels” (aka “Mean Business”) – produced in the late 1970s by Bas Film Productions. Her name is a reference to Blaxploitation character Cleopatra Jones, albeit melded with Bruce Lee action and early James Bond cool. Marrie Lee (aka Doris Young) starred in all three movies.

Tarantino has said that Wong was an inspiration for Uma Thurman’s central character in his “Kill Bill” movies. The “They Call Her…” title was also used for a succession of unrelated exploitation films in the U.S., Europe and The Philippines.

Chris Cornwell, who has written on A Discovery of Witches and Strike Back, has created and written heist drama A Theft of Lies (working title) for Germany’s Zdf Studios and British indie Three Tables Productions.
The series follows an art forger who’s forced into teaming up with a professional thief to steal back priceless Asian artworks that were taken during Britain’s colonial past. The story is inspired by several audacious true-life raids of Chinese art from museums and collections in Europe over the last decade.
The synopsis reads: “A Theft of Lies starts with James Tobin, a British art dealer of East Asian heritage. Tobin is known for his knack of finding lost works from renowned artists and selling them to the wealthy elite who visit his Kensington art gallery. On the surface, he’s exactly what you’d expect from an operator in this world: charming,...

2012’s Think Like A Man was an adaptation of comedian Steve Harvey’s New York Times best-selling book Act Like A Lady, Think Like a Man, where audiences met a group of close friends whose romantic entanglements with the women they pursued made for plenty of sharp comedy and heartfelt reflection once Harvey’s generous relationship advice was added to the mix.
In the end, the non-committer proposed, the dreamer won the heart of the independent woman, the player settled down with the 90-day-rule stickler, the mama’s boy broke free of his mother’s grip and vowed to put the cute single mom first, and the happily divorced guy went back to his wife.
In Think Like A Man Too, the couples are back, along with new stories and funny storylines.
Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along), the sequel takes all the characters to Sin City and drops them...

For a number of years Bombay Sapphire have championed the work of independent film makers with its Imagination Series film competition. Headed up by Oscar-winner Geoffrey Fletcher the competition had its greatest success at this year’s BAFTA awards when James W. Griffiths and Sophie Venner won the Best Short Film award for their stunning Room 8 (which you can, and should, see here).
This week the winning directors converged on the Tribeca Film Festival for an event celebrating the last round of winning entrants and their films. We had the chance to speak with the directors about their influences and their journey to the final film with the Imagination Series.
Film 1: Reflections
Director: Anthony Khaseria
Synopsis: A beautiful couple in beautiful surroundings – it should have been the start of the ultimate love story. But a romantic meal turns dark and fantastical when they discover a hidden mirror which shows their true reflection.

This fantastic short film you're about to watch was inspired by a script outline by Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher. The movie is called Exit Log, and the story takes place in the year 2249. It follows two astronaut engineers on a spaceship that can travel three minutes back in time. Things take a dramatic turn when they receive an emergency message from the past. "Can they decipher the message and decide their fate forever?"
The short was directed by Chris Cornwell, and it's part of a competition series called "The Imagination Series." Here's some information on what that is all about below:
The Imagination Series is a short film competition that aims to spark people's imagination by offering them the chance to have their own short film made through interpreting a script written by Academy Award® winning screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher. Last night, The Tribeca Film Festival premiered the Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series 2014, a showcase of short films from around the globe, created by young filmmakers looking to make a name for themselves. A co-partnership between Tribeca and Bombay, the project gives young filmmakers the opportunity to take a script without a premise or setting, and create their own story around the words. Five separate films were created for the series, all based on the same short script by Academy Award winner Geoffrey Fletcher ("Precious"). For the second year in a row, Fletcher's script - without direction or description - has spawned films that are all very different, and underline the power of imagination. Out of over 1,300 entries from almost 70 countries, the list was whittled down to the five films that premiered at Tribeca. Read about The 2014 Imagination Series Films below (descriptions courtesy of Tribeca Film Festival) "Exit Log" from Chris Cornwell...
