The Resident is no more at Fox.
The network has canceled its medical drama after six seasons. The decision comes nearly three months after The Resident, produced by Disney’s 20th Television, finished its 13-episode sixth season.
Speculation about the show’s fate has swirled since the season — the shortest of the show’s six — ended. The Resident had its lowest-rated season to date among adults 18-49, averaging a 0.53 rating in the key ad demographic over seven days of viewing (versus 0.7 last season). According to Fox, the show’s cross-platform audience of 6.9 million viewers was down 12 percent from the 2021-22 season.
When The Resident premiered in January 2018, 20th TV was still part of the 21st Century Fox family that included the broadcast network. A month earlier, though, Fox and Disney had agreed to a $71 billion sale of the studio and several cable assets to Disney; that deal closed in 2019.

Exclusive: Fox’s The Resident is getting a major new cast addition. Andrew McCarthy has been tapped to recur on the last three episodes of the medical drama’s current fifth season, with an option to become a series regular if The Resident is renewed for a sixth season. As Deadline reported on Friday in our annual Bubble Watch, that is fully expected.
McCarthy will play Dr. Ian Sullivan, a brilliant pediatric surgeon with endless charm that masks a hidden streak of narcissism. He’s a larger-than-life hero to his young patients, but has a complex relationship with his own daughter.
Pretty In Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire alum McCarthy has been largely focused on directing over the past decade; he has helmed 22 episodes of NBC’s The Blacklist and 15 episodes of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, among a slew of other shows. Acting-wise, his most recent major...

Miles Fowler (Women of the Movement) is set as a new series regular on the upcoming fifth season of Fox’s hit medical drama series The Resident.

Fowler’s casting follows last month’s exit of Emily Vancamp after four seasons as a series regular and female lead. The storyline of her character, Nicolette ‘Nic’ Nevin, is expected to be wrapped up early into Season 5.

Emily VanCamp is leaving Fox’s medical drama “The Resident” after starring on the show as nurse Nicolette ‘Nic’ Nevin for four seasons.
There is hope that VanCamp returns to the series in some fashion, sources tell Variety. Season 5 of the series debuts on September 21, and a brand new promo released on Monday features plenty of peril and a conspicuous lack of VanCamp.

Fox has officially renewed two more series for next season, flagship comedy Last Man Standing, headlined by Tim Allen, and medical drama The Resident, starring Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp. Both come from 20th Century Fox TV and both had been a lock to come back.
The pickups leave freshmen Prodigal Son and Outmatched as the only remaining Fox scripted series yet to hear their fate. As we reported, drama Prodigal Son’s renewal is being finalized while comedy Outmatched is not expected to continue.
Last Man Standing and The Resident will join the rest of Fox’s returning live-action series on the bench of midseason. Because of the uncertainty surrounding the timing of Hollywood’s production reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic, Fox’s fall schedule only features scripted series that are either already in the can or are animated, as animation has not been significantly impacted by the pandemic.

A new doctor is coming to Chastain Memorial Park Hospital when “The Resident” returns for its third season this September, with this one played by Morris Chestnut.
Chestnut is joining Season 3 of the Matt Czuchry-led Fox medical drama as Dr. Barrett Cain, “an intimidating neurosurgeon hired by Red Rock Medical to turn around Chastain’s finances.”
Cain believes himself to be a superman physician, capable of curing crippling diseases, according to Fox. He’s charming when he wants to be, but utterly ruthless in his quest for money and power. His ability to exact swift revenge on any who oppose him will put the good doctors at Chastain in jeopardy and drive the season-long thriller arc.

Fox has renewed its Monday procedural lineup of sophomore dramas 9-1-1 and The Resident. Both have been picked up for a third season and both hail from network’s former studio sibling 20th Century Fox TV, which, as of last week, became part of Disney. Following their launch last midseason, 9-1-1 and The Resident delivered +24% year-over-year growth for Fox Monday this past fall.
9-1-1, from Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, was a breakout hit when it premiered last season. It quickly emerged as Fox’s highest-rated and most watched TV series. The network’s unscripted phenom The Masked Singer recently took the crown as Fox’s top primetime series but 9-1-1 remains the net’s most watched and highest-rated scripted series. Miles Gaston Villanueva (Law & Order True Crime) is set for a major recurring role on Fox’s medical drama The Resident.
Villanueva will play Alec, a born innovator, a loner and iconoclast who has spent a lifetime on the move. His father was an eccentric and Alec lived part of his childhood in a converted school bus. He studied to be an infectious disease doctor, but after a stint volunteering with Partners in Health on a Navajo reservation, he embraced a vision of medicine that tries to alter lifestyle via community outreach to prevent, rather than treat, illness. Alec is tender with patients but blunt with everyone else. And yet he is a charmer. His relationships with women tended in the past to lack deep roots. Whenever it was necessary, he moved on.

Fox has given a second-season pickup to medical drama series The Resident. This marks the fourth freshman Fox drama to get a Season 2 renewal, joining 9-1-1, The Gifted and The Orville, making it one of the largest groups of first-year dramas to make it to Year 2 at the network. Question: Do you have anything particularly scandalous about the season finale of Scandal you can share? —Daniela
Ausiello: I see what you did there. Scandalous. Scandal. Clever. I may steal that for next week’s AA. In the meantime, conventional wisdom points to the elusive mole being unmasked in the May 16 finale. Kerry Washington, meanwhile, points to it being the person you’d least expect. “It’s so shocking,” the actress tells us with a huge, hearty laugh.

A giant sinkhole appeared at Seattle Grace Mercy West this week in the form of cracked lives, sunk marriages and broken friendships. Not helped by the actual sinkhole that appeared in the middle of Seattle, providing us with a neat little medical metaphor for our doctors to work with. Grey’s Anatomy announced Season 8 with a premiere filled with style, form, humour and some really cracking performances. Refreshed from their summer hiatus Shonda Rhimes’s cast and crew treated us to a double bill of vintage Grey’s, reminding us that they maybe in Season 8 but they can still deliver the goods. The premiere opens, a week following the events of Season 7 finale, with a departure from the normal format as we meet a young married couple arguing at breakfast, with no surgeons present. This young couple with early marriage problems provide the guiding medical drama as their story intertwines with our doctors.

NBC and Fox have both unleashed their Fall 2011-2012 TV schedule, now ABC has released theirs. I’m excited to see Castle, Modern Family, and The Middle back in the mix. Most of the new shows they have line-up don’t really interest me, but there are a few that have caught my eye. PanAm is another 1960’s based TV show that will go against AMC’s Mad Men and NBC’s The Playboy Club. There’s a show called Revenge that sounds really interesting, but the new series I’m most excited about is is the fantasy series Once Upon A Time, a show where fairy tales collide with the modern day.
Here is ABC’s full schedule along with a description of all of their shows. Go through them below and let us know what TV series you’re most excited about seeing.

"Grey's Anatomy" doctor Kevin McKidd has one special thing in common with Jensen Ackles ("Supernatural"), Jon Cryer ("Two and a Half Men"), David Boreanaz ("Angel," "Bones") and Zachary Levi ("Chuck"): All five actors have directed episodes—in some cases several—of the shows on which they star. For McKidd, the experience was something he had wanted to do for a long time. Taking advantage of "Grey's" ensemble cast, the veteran actor started shadowing directors on the set before being handed the reins to helm webisodes of the hit ABC medical drama, a gig he highly recommends to his fellow thespians looking to make the switch to behind the lens. Back Stage caught up with McKidd to discuss his experience at the helm of the Feb. 3 episode of "Grey's Anatomy"—titled "Don't Deceive Me (Please Don't Go)"—and how being an overthinking actor helped him.Back Stage: When did you...
