Movies are a hot discussion topic on TikTok, and the app is reminding film executives that its community holds sway over pop culture trends. Several stars from #FilmTok are in attendance at the Sundance Film Festival after TikTok invited its silver screen tastemakers to join its contingent at the annual Park City, Utah event.
The creators who are present at Sundance include Joe Aragon (a.k.a. Cinema Joe) and Maddi Koch (a.k.a. Maddi Moo). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the follower counts of the #FilmTok representatives cover a wide range; Spencer Cook‘s 200,000 followers put him on the low end, while The Nobodys top the list with nearly ten million followers.

The Sundance Institute has named the participants and projects set for the 2023 editions of a pair of its flagship programs: the Screenwriters Lab and Screenwriters Intensive.

The Palm Springs International ShortFest took place in California this weekend, honoring the best work in narrative, documentary, live action, and animated short films. 25,000 in cash prizes were given out to various winners, who were narrowed down from over 300 official selections. The top prize went to Sander Joon’s Estonian short film “Sierra,” a surreal animated film about a boy who turns himself into a tire in order to help his father win a race.
The festival’s Oscar-qualifying status means that winners in the Best Live Action Short, Best Documentary Short, Best Animated Short, and Best of the Festival categories may be eligible to submit their work to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Oscar consideration this year.

Animation director Andy Jones has joined Sony Pictures Imageworks. Formerly an animation director at Digital Domain, where he oversaw animation on 20th Century Fox's I, Robot, Jones joined Imageworks for the opportunity to oversee 100 shots of a computer animated digital double of Superman on Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming Superman Returns. Jones joins Imageworks' team of animation directors and supervisors that includes David Schaub, Spencer Cook, Sean Mullen, Troy Saliba, Pepe Valencia, and Todd Wilderman. Jones directed The Final Flight of the Osiris episode from The Animatrix series.
