[[tmz:video id="0_t36umn3m"]] Tennis legend Jimmy Connors is pretty cool and calm ... considering there's a raging fire threatening his mansion in Montecito, CA. The 65-year-old (who looks great, btw) was out with his family at Madeo when he told us the Thomas Fire, raging in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, is too close to his home for comfort. "I'm trying to avoid the fires up in Montecito ... so, hopefully that works out and everybody's safe out there for the holidays.

Days after his funeral was held in Rancho Paolo Verdes, California, fans are continuing to pay tribute to Chester Bennington in creative and artistic ways.
One of the latest memorials to receive attention was a 20-foot mural painted on the back of a newly opened pizzeria in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles.
It took local muralist Jonas Never, 35, just two days to create the mural with spray cans and house paint, the artist told Variety.
“I used to take the pitching mound to the sound of ‘One Step Closer,’ ” said the former baseball player-turned-artist, who worked with artists Kryst and Kub to complete the piece.

If any man alive has the right to argue for TV's recent ascension over movies, it would be David Chase. But "The Sopranos" creator has never seen it that way, telling me a few years ago that the only obvious advantage he thinks TV has is that "there’s more of it, and you can get into more detail. I guess maybe this is what it comes down to: in a television show, you can spend a lot of money on very little small things about people.” That ability to expand stories and drill down on characters has always been TV's greatest strength, but it's been particularly obvious with the migration of indie filmmakers to TV over the last few years. Shows like "Transparent," "Girls," "Togetherness," and Hulu's new "Casual" could have easily been made into 90-minute movies that played the festival circuit; instead, we get longer versions that really...

It’s that time of year again. It’s the “Eye of The Storm,” that eerily calm time between the end of the French Open and the start of Wimbledon. It’s also time for our annual “Hot Guys of Tennis” post. There are two caveats – These are players from the Open Era of Tennis (sorry, Don Budge fans), and all of the players must have achieved a ranking of at least #25 on the Atp Tour. There have to be rules!

Lena Dunham is on today's "B.S. Report," where she talks about her obsession with the Old Loves Tumblr (join the club), a deep enduring love for Brad Renfro (join the club), and a few of her dream projects. She says she'd love to direct one of Espn's "30 for 30" docs, perhaps about women's tennis, since she's a fan. Bill Simmons pitched her Monica Seles's stabbing, or maybe the relationship between Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors, either of which could be great, though Seles seems more intriguing, because there's already an Evert-Navratilova installment. Dunham also says she dreams of guest-starring on other shows. "My life's great passion is the idea of being a guest star on Scandal," she says. "I want to be like, a senator who did something wrong." She admits that she's probably not "technically allowed to" be on another show, but surely there's a way to get around that.

At best an occasional and half-hearted follower of tennis (which is still more than I can say for most other sports), I had never heard of Jimmy Connors before seeing "This is What They Want," the new "30 for 30" doc airing on Espn tonight at 8pm. I mention this not as a reflection on Connors' celebrity -- now 61, Connors is the winner of eight Grand Slam singles titles and a larger than life figure -- but as reassurance that, despite the film being mainly a fond reflection on the pleasures of Connors' courtside talent and prickly personality, it doesn't require a prior investment in who he is to be an enjoyable watch. Connors was a gifted tennis player and pretty much a professional sonuvabitch who seemed to draw power from hatred of his opponents, umpires and linemen. "This is What They Want," which is directed by Brian Koppelman and David Levien ("Ocean's Thirteen,...

Espn’s acclaimed “30 for 30” series returns tonight with its 52nd entry, Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau, an examination of the life of a pioneering big-wave surfer. Even though its name is essentially gibberish now (“30 for 30” refers to the batch of films rolled out to celebrate the network’s 30-year anniversary in 2009), the sports-documentary project retains its critical and ratings impact. The fresh set of films rolling out over the next six weeks also includes reflections on the Tonya Harding–Nancy Kerrigan feud, the brutal boxing rivalry of Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran, and Jimmy Connors’s stranger-than-fiction run at the 1991 U.S. Open. To get suitably pumped for the return of “30 for 30,” Vulture did what any true sports fan would: ranked the previous 51 documentaries in the series from worst to first.51. Andy Murray - The Man Behind the Racquet seemed to be part of the ongoing drive to reframe Murray, from number two-seeded, Us Open-winning, sulky-drawers face-ache, to someone, well, nicer, or at least more marketable.
Presented by Sue Barker in the wistful preoccupied way of a woman who finds it hard to forget how fine Jimmy Connors once looked in his tight white shorts, it wasn't entirely unconvincing. Though I'm still not persuaded that crying because you've lost a Wimbledon final means you're any "nicer" than you were before you became publicly emotionally incontinent. Nor am I convinced that...

As Wimbledon rolls on, tennis star Andy Murray has challenged Serena Williams to a match, and she seems willing to accept.
Inspired by a suggestion that came via Twitter, Murray -- currently ranked No. 2 in the world -- made the offer official in an online column for the BBC:
"I have been challenged by someone on Twitter to taking on Serena Williams," Murray wrote. "I'd be up for it, why not?
"I've never hit with her but she's obviously an incredible player and I think people would be interested to see the men play against the women to see how the styles match up. It's happened in the past with Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova. How about Las Vegas as a venue?"

Former Friends star Matthew Perry lived out a childhood dream on the set of his new TV show Mr. Sunshine when he found himself playing tennis with his hero Jimmy Connors.
The actor decided to invite the sports legend to be a part of an episode of the show - and was amazed when Connors agreed.
Perry was completely taken aback when the tennis ace suggested they warm-up together.
He says, "I was, like, a 12-year-old kid in Canada and I had his haircut... As we were going down to shoot, he said, 'Y'know, I've bought my gear, if you wanna play...' We laid down a tennis court and Jimmy Connors and I got to rally a little bit."
And Connors was suitably impressed with Perry, who was a tennis phenomenon in his native Canada as a kid.
Perry adds, "A couple of weeks later I got a message from him and he asked me to play in a real charity tennis event with him... and then we've become sort of text buddies... I want this to be a relationship in my life."...

ABC's new comedy "Mr. Sunshine" is set mostly at a sports arena. Co-creator and star Matthew Perry notes, however, that arenas tend to have a lot of other things going on between games: concerts, monster-truck rallies, circuses and the like.
Perry hopes those things can provide good backdrops for comedy -- but they can also serve as a bit of wish fulfillment for the show's cast. Perry, who was a highly ranked junior tennis player as a teenager, gets to hit with Jimmy Connors in an episode, and his co-star Allison Janney -- who plays the arena's loopy owner, Crystal -- sings a duet with James Taylor.

Caplan famously stepped in at the last minute to play a lead on the Sony/Tarses pilot for CBS Mad Love as a guest star and helped the pilot score a midseason order but she also caused a holdup in the deal as the network and the studio first tried to persuade her to stay on and then had to find a replacement when she declined. Australian actor Hugh Jackman, star of films including X-Men and Australia, is to show off his dancing skills in a global TV campaign for Lipton Ice Tea.
It is the first time that Jackman, perhaps best known as Wolverine in X-Men and the rugged stockman Drover opposite Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann's Australia, has appeared in a TV ad campaign. The first of two ads will break internationally from Monday.

X-Men star signs up with drink firm
Hugh Jackman, the actor most famous as the testosterone-fuelled Wolverine in X-Men, is to show his softer side in a global advertising campaign for Lipton Ice Tea.
Jackman, who also played the rugged stockman Drover opposite Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann's Australia, has signed a three-year deal to front a multimillion-pound campaign, the first he has starred in outside his native Australia.
The European marketing director for Lipton Ice Tea, Francois Bazini, said that it was Jackman's singing and dancing performance as a host at last year's Academy Awards that convinced the company to sign him up.
"He has a great personality liked by men and women," said Bazini. "He is very different from many other actors. He is a true entertainer who can dance, sing and act. We will use all of his skills."

Public courts sprang up everywhere, young kids got racquets and took lessons, and a generation of marketable American stars -- Chris Evert, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, even a naturalized Martina Navratilova -- emerged.
