The UK industry has something to celebrate about women in film - at least compared to more dismal stats in the Us.
Across 11 top territories in the global film industry, women make up an average of 7% of directors, 19.7% of writers and 22% of producers.
But in UK independent film, women number 27.3% of directors, while in the Us last year, only two women directed films in the top 100.
Among writers, the UK has 58.8% female screenwriters, compared to 11.8% in the Us.
In UK independent films, 37.9% of characters seen on screen are female, but that drops to 23.6% when the UK collaborates with the Us.
Those were some of the stats presented by Madeline Di Nonno, CEO of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender In Media as part of the Institute’s Symposium at BFI Southbank yesterday (Oct 8), presented with the BFI and Wftv.

BFI colleagues have paid tribute to Chris Collins, the BFI Film Fund Senior Development and Production Executive who lost his battle to cancer on Saturday, Nov 1.
In a letter to industry colleagues today, BFI Film Fund head Ben Roberts wrote: “We are all going to miss his loyalty, honesty and integrity, his warm dry wit, and his complete devotion to independent film and the film industry he loved.
“He was a champion for new filmmakers and a brilliant creative mind. I think we will all feel his loss quite profoundly.
“All our hearts and thoughts are with Chris’s wife Emma, his daughters Matilda and Jessie, and all his family.”
At the BFI Film Fund Collins had strategic responsibility for shorts and low budget film, taking a leading role in the creation of the BFI Net.Work, as well as projects which pushed the envelope of traditional filmmaking, including Amma Asante’s Belle and Jonathan Glazer’s [link...

The government's decision to axe the UK Film Council came out of the blue yesterday. But what does it mean for the professionals who keep our film industry going?
I was on my way home from a meeting with David Thompson at Origin Films about a project called Granny Made Me an Anarchist when I got news of the government's intention to abolish the Film Council. My first thought was for the people at the Film Council who were going to lose their jobs – never a pleasant prospect and at this time a lot more unpleasant. My second thought – and it will be one shared by just about every writer, director and producer I know in the UK – was: what does this mean for my project? Because, put simply, if it hadn't been for the Film Council, the project wouldn't exist.
About 18 months ago, my friend, the journalist Duncan Campbell,...

I say this every year, but I have high hopes for this season of Project Runway.
Maybe.
Last year I had high hopes, but aside from Ping's meltdowns, Anthony's exuberance, and Jesse's hotness, the season was pretty much a bust (although I am glad that Seth Aaron beat the arrogant Emilio for the championship).
This season could turn out to be interesting, though. When the show returns on Thursday, July 29th at 9Pm Est on Lifetime, it will now be 90 minutes long, which may increase the drama, and give us more insight into the creative process. Along with Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia will be returning, and hopefully they'll include some eclectic guest judges. My favorite last season? Milla Jovovich.
Best of all, of the nine male designers competing this season, seven are part of "Team Gay," which is the most for any season of Project Runway.
Maybe.

Time to say goodbye to the stick-thin model trend. Gorgeous and glamorous is back!
We told you this was going to a big deal! Skinny models are no longer ruling the runways as designers have given them the boot. In their place, gorgeous Supermodels are hitting the catwalk. We caught up with Sports Illustrated model Julie Henderson and Ralph Lauren model Chris Collins on the red carpet of Niche Media’s Annual Gotham Magazine Gala and they told us that this change is Huge for the industry and for women everywhere!
When asked what she thought about Prada firing the skinny models from its Feb. 24 show and replacing them with Victoria’s Secret Angels at the last minute, Julie said,”I love it, I love it, I love it. I’m so happy that they did that because it portrays more of a womanly body type. I’m not a size zero,...

Britain's Queen Elizabeth's home is charged just £1,375.24 council tax. Despite being grouped in the highest property bracket, the 775-room Buckingham Palace is in Westminster - which has the second lowest rate in the country - and has a bill over £400 cheaper than the average for families in other areas of London. Valuations on properties to classify them for council tax banding was done 18 years ago. Buckingham Palace was placed in the highest-ranking Band H, which covers all properties valued at £320,000 or more. Accountant Chris Collins pays £1,780 to Lambeth council for his four-bedroom home in Streatham, south London. He told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: "It is ridiculous to think that this house costs more in council...
