Gore Verbinski's blue-soaked, melancholic "The Ring" incited a wave of J-horror stateside upon its release in 2002. A new century always brings new horror rules, and for the early part of this century, those rules mandated imported ghosties with tragic, complex backstories. Unlike most horror remakes, especially J-horror remakes, Verbinski's "The Ring" is arguably stronger than Hideo Nakata's original, no small feat given Nakata's status as one of this generation's premier Japanese horror auteurs. Post-millennium anxiety, digital unease, and swelling domestic discontent coalesced into more than hospitable conditions for "The Ring" to not just succeed, but succeed remarkably. $249 million worldwide isn't bad by any metric.
Beyond Verbinski's assured control of the material, the cast of new and familiar faces helped augment "The Ring's" most enduring scares. While Naomi Watts might be front and center, Daveigh Chase's contributions as chief baddie Samara Morgan cannot be overstated. With a dense,...

By now it’s safe to say that Naomi Watts is a bona fide Scream Queen. After more than a decade in small roles or B movies, the British actress finally found widespread acclaim in 2001 with David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. She followed this up with a star-making role in Gore Verbinski’s The Ring, and sky-rocketted to international fame. Watts has worked steadily since then, winning coveted parts like Ann Darrow in Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Oscar Nominated roles in 21 Grams and The Impossible, and franchise fame in the Divergent series.
Born in England, Watts and her brother moved around the UK with her Welsh mother before relocating to Australia at the age of 14 where she broke into acting. Despite this international upbringing, Watts is most known in the horror world for starring in American remakes of acclaimed foreign films. Her role in The Ring was just...

Twenty years ago, I couldn’t sleep…
My boyfriend and I had gone to see this new film called The Ring. It was incredible—so unlike the other horror films that were being produced when I was in college. But now, as we laid in bed in his rental house, I couldn’t seem to relax. Every time I closed my eyes, the image of an old well was seared into my brain. And if I let the image sit long enough, a ghostly little girl would slowly climb up out of the well and creep toward me.
It played again and again. Much like the images created by Samara in the film, it wouldn’t leave my mind. Eventually, my boyfriend whispered, “Are you awake?”
“Yes,” I replied. “I keep thinking about the movie. I keep seeing her coming up out of the well.”
“Me too,” he admitted. We...

This post contains minor spoilers for episode two of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 3, and major spoilers for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" is an irreverent animated take on "Star Trek" created by a bunch of nerds who love the franchise and really know their stuff. They know what kinds of Easter eggs and cameos are going to get fans excited, and boy howdy does the latest cameo get me more excited than Ensign Boimler (Jack Quaid) on bridge duty. The series has featured a couple of cameos from major "Star Trek: The Next Generation" alumni like Commander Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), but now they're finally giving the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" fanatics their own perfect cartoon cameo.
General Martok, the Klingon warrior played by J.G. Hertzler, makes his "Lower Decks" debut in season 3, episode 2, "The Least Dangerous Game," and...

I sat down with actor Demian Bichir during the final months of 2008, when he was appearing in “The Waters of Babylon” at the Geffen Playhouse. Since then, Bichir has become a recognizable face north of the U.S.-Mexico border following his lauded turn in last year’s indie hit “A Better Life,” for which he was tapped with a Best Actor Oscar nomination yesterday.

Mary Alice; "Susan was having dreams about sex and they were becoming a nightmare." Cos she's dreaming about Paul (Mark Moses). That'd make your skin crawl! Ha. Mary Alice: "The residents of Wisteria Lane are nothing if not loyal. they love their country, root for their home town...but the fiercest loyalty on Wisteria Lane is the one between friends." The role of Pam’s mom on The Office has been filled by Linda Purl, a relative unknown whose biggest claim to fame was playing Andy Griffith’s daughter on Matlock.
Last month, Office producer, writer and co-star B.J. Novak said Mrs. Beasly probably wouldn’t be played by a well-known actress, and that was largely by design:
“That’s the rule we have stuck to on our show - it is supposed to be real average Joes, and casting a famous actor just takes away from that,” Novak said.
“We have only cast a famous actor when they can blend right in as was the case with Amy Ryan. Or if it makes sense for the role, like with Jack Black.”
Linda Purl makes her Office debut next month at Pam and Jim’s wedding.

Ausiello over at EW broke some casting news for Season 6 of The Office. It seems actress Linda Purl, who played Fonzie's girl in Happy Days and Matlock's daughter in Matlock, will make an appearance (perhaps a few episodes) in Scranton as Mrs. Beesly. But wasn't her mom played by another actress, way back in Season 2, you ask? Yes, back in Episode 2 of the second season, Shannon Cochran played Pam's Mom. But as weird as role casting changes may seem, they do, in fact, need to happen from time to time. No other details have emerged on just what type of wedding Pam and Jim are going to have and if the crazy gang from Dunder-Mifflin will be present. My guess is that they all will be there and this won't be your typical wedding. That's just a hunch. The Office returns to NBC in on September 17, 2009 with episode ...

One of the most high-profile job openings in Office history — the role of Pam's mom — has been filled. And true to their word, producers resisted the urge to cast Meryl Streep. Or Goldie Hawn. Or Bonnie Hunt. Or...... anyone else whose name you'd recognize. Instead, the plum part went to Linda Purl, a relatively unknown actress whose biggest claim to fame was playing Andy Griffith's daughter on Matlock. Stop the presses! On second though, don't. It's not like I didn't see this coming though. Last month, Office producer/star B.J. Novak warned me that Mrs. Beasley probably wouldn't get an A- (or B- or C-) list portrayer. "That's the rule we have stuck to on our show — it is supposed to be real average Joes, and casting a famous actor takes away from that," he said. "We have only cast a famous actor when they can blend right in...

Playwright Tracy Letts' "Killer Joe", seen off-Broadway a few years back, was a ripping Gothic thriller that promised the arrival of a significant playwriting talent. This, his second play to be seen in New York, only confirms it.
Although it degenerates into a wildly baroque and over-the-top conclusion, "Bug" is a riveting thriller of paranoia and an instant guilty pleasure.
Set in a seedy Oklahoma motel room, the play revolves around the ill-fated meeting between Agnes (Shannon Cochran), a down-on-her-luck waitress, and Peter (Michael Shannon), a mysterious stranger introduced to her by her lesbian friend R.C. (Amy Landecker). Agnes is hanging out in the hotel to avoid her violent ex-husband, Jerry (Michael Cullen), who has just been released from prison. She allows Peter, a soft-spoken military veteran with an oddly recessive personality, to camp out on her floor, and it isn't long before the two become lovers.
This doesn't sit well with Jerry, who has reappeared expecting to resume their relationship. But that turns out to be the least of Agnes' problems because her room soon appears to become infested with bugs, which the increasingly disturbed Peter claims are the result of experiments conducted on him by the military. By the time the mysterious Dr. Sweet (Reed Birney) arrives offering to help, things have taken a turn toward the deranged.
While the plotting edges toward the preposterous, the playwright's gift for sharp-edged dialogue, evocative atmosphere and incisive characterizations keeps us tightly drawn in. At once a compelling thriller and sometimes riotously funny black comedy, "Bug" also manages to be a moving portrait of two lost souls finding salvation, eventually the darkest kind, in each other.
