From the series’ inception, “The Crown” has been structured to evolve as the story of Queen Elizabeth’s reign unfolded. The most notable change, of course, has been the rotating cast, with first Claire Foy, then Olivia Coleman, and finally Imelda Staunton brought in to play the British monarch who stoically bore witness to seven decades of national crises. But the team behind the camera has also kept up with the decades, making adjustments that give Season 5 a weight and poignancy: this is the period where everything’s going wrong with Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), but we know just how much further wrong it will go.

A dummy corpse from Netflix hit series “The Crown” nearly sparked a murder investigation, the production designers have revealed.
In February of this year, during the shooting on location of Season 5, thieves stole 200,000 worth of antique props contained in two large trucks from the show’s set. But they threw out a dummy corpse they also found alongside the antiques.
Set decorator Alison Harvey told Variety that the props mostly related to Episode 6, which looks at the relations between the British royals and Soviet Russia.
“It’s a shame because it was some of the loveliest antiques that we could actually get our hands on because we were trying to recreate the Russian Imperial family and the wealth of ancient Russia,” Harvey said. “So there was quite a lot lost, which was very sad. We just made accommodation in the set for what was missing and it was sort of fine,...

The Emmy-nominated crafts team said goodbye to post-war austerity and introduced more color to Season 2 of “The Crown,” which ushered in the Swinging ’60s. That meant isolating Queen Elizabeth (Claire Foy) in Buckingham Palace as she struggles to become relevant, and liberating her younger sister, Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby), who hooks up with bohemian photographer Tony Armstrong-Jones (Matthew Goode).

One of the most challenging tasks designers face is outfitting one location to play another, or turning contemporary settings into a different time period. Many of the contenders vying for this year’s Emmys for production design grappled with these challenges.
To portray the English country home of the well-to-do Wilcox family, the titular location in the Starz miniseries adaptation of the E.M. Forster novel “Howards End,” set at the dawn of the 20th century, production designer Luke Hall chose Vann House, near Hambledon, England, built in 1542 and remodeled in 1907.
“We completely redressed the interior of the house,” says Hall, “but the garden was in such good shape, all we had to do was fill out the flower beds, let the grass grow a little longer and give it a bit more shape and structure so it felt more nestled into its landscape.”

Netflix original series The Crown has come under fire amid reports that Claire Foy (Aka Queen Elizabeth) was paid significantly less than her on-screen Duke of Edinburgh, Matt Smith.
Per Variety, it’s understood Foy was paid $40,000 per episode for the first two series, where the 33-year-old actress portrayed the monarch during the 1950s and early 1960s. Details of Matt Smith’s own salary weren’t disclosed at the time of writing, though Netflix has vowed to stamp out The Crown‘s own gender pay gap before Olivia Colman headlines season 3.

The Duffer Brothers’ ’80s homage to Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, “Stranger Things” won for outstanding editing, main title theme music, main title design, sound editing, and casting. The Jonathan Nolan/ Lisa Joy sci-fi/western, “Westworld,” earned outstanding special visual effects (the domain of “Game of Thrones” five years running), makeup (non-prosthetic), hairstyling, sound mixing, and creative achievement in interactive media.

In their first pre-production meeting for “The Crown,” production designer Martin Childs brought executive producer Stephen Daldry an image that become a bedrock of the show’s visual language.
“It was this digital picture I made using Photoshop of a post-war, almost apocalyptic level of austerity with buildings crumbling, and through a doorway you could see a fabulous wealth of richness,” said Childs. “It would be the image we would keep going to back to as the visual motif.”
That was key to creating production design for “The Crown,” which details the struggles in the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Not only did it need to recreate history, but it also had to give viewers a sense of royal life and its vast scale.

Apparently the TV Academy will only go so far in honoring sci-fi when it comes to the below-the-line craft nominations. While HBO’s “Westworld” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” deservedly snagged 12 and 11 noms, respectively, FX’s “Legion” was totally shut out. That’s right: Noah Hawley’s mind-blowing Marvel superhero deconstruction didn’t get recognition for either Michael Wylie’s eye-popping production design or Dana Gonzales’s experimental cinematography. Perhaps it was too subversive for its own good.
