Sylvester Stallone struggled to get his 1976 film Rocky made. But with an estimated budget of just $1M, the shoot was hanging in the balance. However, by cutting costs, Rocky was a study in film frugality. Much of Rocky Balboa’s wardrobe was plucked from Stallone’s closet, and the shoot was done in a gritty filmmaking style.
Just how did ‘Rocky’ come under budget?
Keeping Rocky‘s budget from going over was forefront in the minds of the film’s producers. Here are some methods director John G. Avildsen consequently used to keep the Sylvester Stallone-penned film under its $1M budget.
Interiors were shot in LA since an entire 28-day shoot in Philadelphia was too pricey, reported Mental Floss. Subsequently, the Rocky crew quietly shot exteriors using a nonunion crew.
Avildsen would drive around Philadelphia in a van with Stallone and a cameramen inside. However, he would spot an interesting location,...

After “Creed III” grossed $275 million at the worldwide box office and established Michael B. Jordan as a formidable director, there was never much real doubt about whether the “Rocky” spin-off series would continue. The biggest question was whether Jordan would return to the director’s chair or use his newfound filmmaking clout to pursue other projects.
According to longtime “Rocky” producer Irwin Winkler, Jordan will in fact be back to helm the still-untitled “Creed 4.” In a series of video clips shared by Deadline, Winkler offered an update on the sequel’s strike-delayed development and Jordan’s creative involvement.
“We’re planning to do ‘Creed 4’ right now. We think we have a really good story, a really good plot,” Winkler said, adding that the project should go into pre-production roughly one year from now.
When asked about Jordan’s interest in directing “Creed 4,” Winkler gave a blunt answer: “I’m not supposed to say,...

Burt Young, a former boxer who was in Sylvester Stallone’s corner as his brother-in-law Paulie in the six Rocky films and received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his turn in the original, has died. He was 83.
He died on Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told The New York Times Wednesday.
A tough guy in real life who usually played tough guys onscreen, Young portrayed a rotten client of gumshoe Jack Nicholson’s in Chinatown (1974), was mobster “Bed Bug” Eddie in The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) and played Rodney Dangerfield’s protector/chauffeur Lou in Back to School (1986).
Young also appeared in four movies in four straight years with fellow Queens guy James Caan — Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Gambler (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976) — before they worked together again in Mickey Blue Eyes (1999).

Los Angeles, Sep 19 (Ians) Hollywood icon Sylvester Stallone just penned about “what (he) knew” when making ‘Rocky’.
The 77-year-old star wrote the script for the 1976 film — which spawned the iconic franchise featuring Sly as Philadelphia boxer Rocky Balboa — and used his own life as inspiration during his initial ideas for the character, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“I just wrote about what I knew. I was writing a lot about this little kind of mentally challenged guy who happened to have a lot of heart. I wanted to write a movie about a guy who says, ‘I’m not great at all, never will be. I fight great fighters. But I just want the opportunity to go the distance,’ ” Sylvestersaid at Toronto International Film Festival.
Sly penned the screenplay for ‘Rocky’ in just three days but was disappointed that Hollywood executives showed little interest in the project at first.

“Do I have regrets?” asks Sylvester Stallone at the beginning of “Sly,” the Thom Zimny documentary about him that served as the closing-night film at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday. “Hell yeah, I have regrets.”
Putting that quote up front is a smart way to introduce a film about the man whose career sometimes seems to have resulted in equal parts iconography and mockery. The actor, screenwriter and director created the classic characters Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, but struggled to find respect and made more than his share of terrible films.
Another smart move: New conversations with Stallone run throughout the film, but these are not the usual talking-head interviews in which the subject sits in a chair and runs through his life. Instead, Stallone almost always talks to the camera while standing up and moving around.

Warner Bros. Discovery raised the hackles of some in Hollywood with last month’s launch of Max — the reskinned and renamed version of HBO Max — because the new service’s content details pages consolidated writers, directors, producers and others under a single “creators” heading.
Five weeks after issuing a mea culpa and promising to fix the situation, Wbd has now updated the listings in Max. The updates appear to be live on platforms including the max.com website and iOS and will be rolling out across all device platforms this week.
For example, on Max, the Oscar-winning film “Raging Bull” starring Robert De Niro now includes the following listings: Directors: Martin Scorsese; Writers: Paul Schrader, Mardik Martin; Producers: Irwin Winkler, Robert Chartoff; Based on Source Material by: Jake La Motta, Joseph Carter, Peter Savage. When Max launched on May 23, the service grouped all of those individuals under a single “creators” heading.

It’s been a rough month for Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
Getting booed at a university commencement was one thing, but having to fire a news network chief, seeing a major superhero film tank and getting skewered for everything from throwing a party in Cannes during a labor stoppage to slashing costs at the beloved TCM classic movie channel has been nothing short of brutal.
Zaslav has made misstep after misstep, said one veteran Hollywood executive, pointing especially to that celebration of Warner’s 100 year anniversary party at the Hotel Du Cap in Cannes with Air Mail’s Graydon Carter as a tone-deaf move during a strike. “It’s the most transparent drug-like addiction [to celebrity] that I’ve even seen,” the executive said.
Added the executive: “All the guys were rooting for him.

Warner Bros. Discovery will update its filmmaker credit listings on Max after facing pushback from viewers on social media as well as the Directors Guild of America and Writers Guild of America.
“We agree that the talent behind the content on Max deserve their work to be properly recognized,” a Warner Bros. Discovery spokesperson told TheWrap. “We will correct the credits, which were altered due to an oversight in the technical transition from HBO Max to Max and we apologize for this mistake.”
TheWrap’s review of the details section of films on the streamer like “Goodfellas” and “Superman the Movie” found that writers and directors of those projects had been lumped into a new “Creators” category.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming app Max changed its name Tuesday, dropping the “HBO” from HBO Max when it merged with Discovery+. But as an eagle-eyed viewer discovered later in the day, it also changed how basic details about a film are listed. And movie fans are very displeased.
On Tuesday night, film commentator (and Twitter power user) John Frankensteiner shared a screengrab of the details section from the landing page for the film “Raging Bull,” as it currently appears on Max.
While the film’s principle actors are listed under “starring,” director Martin Scorsese, writers Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin, and producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, are lumped together under a single listing: “Creators.” Included with them are Peter Savage, author of the book that inspired the film, and boxer Jake Lamotta whose life is depicted in it. Their individual roles are not differentiated.

John G. Avildsen's "Rocky" is one of Hollywood's greatest underdog tales, both onscreen and off. The film was a surprise pop-cultural phenomenon in 1976, about a club boxer, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), getting a surprise shot at the heavyweight championship by the overconfident Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). It was the top-grossing movie of the year, and shocked the world by winning the Best Picture Oscar over incredibly stiff competition like "Taxi Driver," "All the President's Men," and "Network."
Before the plaudits and box office success, "Rocky" was a Hail Mary pass from a struggling actor who decided to make his own luck by writing a boxing drama inspired by Muhammad Ali's fifteenth-round Tko of Chuck "The Bayonne Bleeder" Wepner. Ali was heavily favored to put the journeyman fighter away early, but he gutted it out and nearly went the distance. Stallone claims he wrote the first draft of the script in three days,...

Sylvester Stallone is throwing a punch toward the plot of “Creed III.”
The “Rocky” icon revealed in a Hollywood Reporter cover story that he views Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut as taking the franchise into a “dark space” due to a “different philosophy” on the characters. “Creed III,” which will arrive in theaters in March 2023, is the first “Rocky”-related film not to include Stallone onscreen or as a producer.
“This is a classic case of them going around and trying to continually cherry-pick aspects of ‘Rocky’ without even asking me if I want to join in,” Stallone said, citing the other “Drago” spinoff rumored to be in the works. “I’m not an executive producer on the ‘Creed’ movies. Ryan Coogler is. Michael B. Jordan is. [Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff’s] children are. Not mine. I’m the only one left out.”

Sylvester Stallone is synonymous with the character of Rocky Balboa, the scrappy underdog boxer who first brought him to the spotlight in the ’70s. But in recent years, Stallone has made it very clear that even though the films are inextricably linked with him, he’s not happy about the way the original deal was structured and thinks he should have received an ownership stake.
On July 31, following the announcement of a “Rocky” spinoff film in development about the characters of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and Viktor Drago (Viktor Drago), Stallone took to Instagram to express his frustrations about the direction of the expanding franchise, and particularly its longtime producer Irwin Winkler. In a since-deleted post, the actor called the 91-year-old producer and his children Charles and David Winkler “vultures” and “parasites” who he says are exploiting the franchise. Sylvester Stallone has more to say about the Rocky franchise in light of MGM developing a film spinoff centering on Ivan Drago.
Stallone — who wrote the screenplay for 1976’s Oscar-winning Rocky, in which he starred as boxer Rocky Balboa — took to Instagram on Saturday to criticize the planned film Drago that is being written by Robert Lawton, as first reported this week by The Wrap. Although Stallone did not directly name anyone in his latest post, his mention of a “94-year-old producer” is an apparent reference to Irwin Winkler, who is 91 and has a producing credit on all of the films in the Rocky franchise, in addition to the subsequent Creed spinoff films.
“Another Heartbreaker… Just found this out…Once Again , Pathetic 94 year old Producer and His Selfish Useless Children are once again picking what is left Off The Bones of another wonderful character!

Although plot details are being kept under wraps, “Drago” centers on Russian fighter Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), who first appeared as the antagonist in 1985’s “Rocky IV,” and his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) who was last seen as the antagonist in 2018’s “Creed 2.”
Lawton’s spec script “Becoming Rocky” about the making of the first “Rocky” film, was one of 50 scripts that won a 2021 Nicholl Fellowship. MGM execs were impressed by the spec and the “Drago” take that Lawton came up with, giving him the job.

Sylvester Stallone came out swinging against “Rocky” producer Irwin Winkler.
After Winkler’s son and fellow producer of the “Creed” franchise David Winkler published the memoir “The Arrangement: A Love Story,” Stallone shared his one-star review of the book on Instagram, captioning, “You know I love reading and I’ve read thousands of books but I have to say This one is by far the worst! If you ever run out of toilet paper Please by this one you won’t be disappointed.”
Stallone went on to call David Winkler “painfully untalented” and his father Irwin the “remarkably untalented and parasitical Producer of ‘Rocky’ and ‘Creed'” before praising Winkler’s “wonderful” producing partner Robert Chartoff who passed away in 2015.
“If it wasn’t for Winkler there would’ve been at least another three ‘Rocky’’s, that would’ve been wonderful,” Stallone wrote. “Frankly that crew are the worst unhunman...

Irwin Winkler has been producing films for parts of six decades. His latest is “The Irishman,” which reunites him with frequent collaborators Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro as well as Al Pacino (“Revolution”). Winkler was first mentioned in Variety on Dec. 24, 1958, when he was an agent at William Morris and getting married. He left the agency to become a producer, debuting with the 1967 Elvis Presley movie “Double Trouble.”
Soon after, he and Robert Chartoff formed Chartoff Winkler Prods., scoring big with the 1969 drama “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” Directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Jane Fonda, the film earned nine Oscar nominations, winning a supporting actor trophy for Gig Young. The producing duo took home the Oscar when “Rocky” (1976) won best picture. Since then, their many films have included “The Right Stuff,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” both “Creed” films and now “The Irishman.”

Joseph Wambaugh’s breakthrough novel went through a blender to fit George C. Scott into the narrative, but it’s still a great cop show with terrific work from Stacy Keach and Scott Wilson, not to mention Jane Alexander and Rosalind Cash. The pro-cop agenda has a definite tone of personal experience, and the grim finish is anything but feel-good puffery.

Craig T. Rumar, a talent agent who represented Sylvester Stallone in negotiations for Rocky and handled Arnold Schwarzenegger's deal for Conan the Barbarian, has died. He was 85.
Rumar died Oct. 25 in Athens, Texas, after a battle with Lewy body dementia, a publicist announced.
Serving as Stallone's agent, Rumar — working with Larry Kubik, his business partner at Film Artists Management Enterprises — negotiated and packaged the deal with producers Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler and United Artists that would bring Rocky (1976) to the big screen.

One of the best pictures to come out of Hollywood in the late 1960s, Sydney Pollack’s screen version of Horace McCoy’s hardboiled novel is a harrowing experience guaranteed to elicit extreme responses. Jane Fonda performs (!) at the top of an ensemble of stars suffering in a Depression-Era circle of Hell – it’s an Annihilating Drama with a high polish. And this CineSavant review ends with a fact-bomb that ought to start Barbara Steele fans off on a new vault search.

On Oct. 21, 1983, Warner Bros. launched a 194-minute space epic, The Right Stuff, which went on to win four Oscars at the 56th Academy Awards. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below.

While we appreciated the poignant turn 69-year-old Sylvester Stallone gave as aged Rocky Balboa in last year’sCreed, let’s turn back the clock 40 years and marvel at his original performance in 1976’s Rocky. Here was an unknown, droopy-eyed actor who refused to sell the script he wrote in three days — and with only $106 to his name, and a pregnant wife at home — unless he could play the muscle-bound boxer.
Producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff agreed and Stallone didn’t disappoint, giving a magnificent performance as the hard-luck pugilist who wants nothing but the chance to go the distance with reigning heavyweight champ Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and win the heart of shy pet-store keeper Adrian (Talia Shire).
Rocky earned 10 Oscar nominations, including one for Stallone as Best Actor, and took home the Best Picture award. Atta boy Rocky!

The first steps toward making a sequel to Creed — the seventh film in the Rocky Balboa franchise — are imminent, says Irwin Winkler. The producer, who won a best-picture Oscar for the original Rocky (shared with then-partner Robert Chartoff) expects to start talking about the Creed follow-up this month. “Next couple of weeks, we’ll start,” he said on February 29. “But basically it’s about Creed [rather than Rocky]. We think that there is really a story to examine the life of Adonis Creed, and we’re going ahead with it.” He did not say whether

Sylvester Stallone might be having a Rocky-esque career comeback with his Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination for his supporting turn in Creed, but it's certainly not his first time in the awards-circuit ring - though it has been a while. In fact, it's been 39 years since Stallone, now 69, walked the Academy Awards red carpet as a nominee. In 1977, the actor solidified his position as a Hollywood knockout with the cult-favorite original Rocky film, which earned Stallone twin nominations: Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. Stallone walked away with the screenplay prize, and in one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history,...

Rising writer-director Ryan Coogler's "Creed" opened on awards-friendly November 25. His take on the "Rocky" franchise and the seventh film in the series is already a popular hit, at $87 million domestic and counting. The project dates back to July 2013 when, just as Coogler's debut "Fruitvale Station" hit theaters after touted premieres at Sundance and Cannes, MGM tapped Coogler, now 29, to direct the film and co-write with Aaron Covington. None of this would have happened if Coogler had not been able to convince writer-director-actor Sylvester Stallone to let him develop this reprise of Rocky Balboa, a character that he created almost 40 years ago. "Creed" is produced by Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, who produced the original 1976 Best Picture-winning "Rocky," Stallone and Kevin King Templeton. Now it looks like Stallone has a shot at a supporting actor Oscar nomination, which would mark his first since...

MGM’s Rocky spinoff pic, Creed, has finally cast its leading lady in the shape of Tessa Thompson. The actress is currently on a winning streak this year, after accruing critical acclaim for her turn in heavyweight drama Selma and bagging a Gotham award for her part in Dear White People. Now that she’s boarded the boxing pic, she’ll be entering the ring with another noted rising star.
Reuniting with his Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler for the movie is leading man Michael B. Jordan. He is locked in to take on the part of Apollo Creed’s grandson alongside the titular star of the original series, Sylvester Stallone. With Jordan’s character in training with the older, more wizened Rocky, it’s thought that project newcomer Thompson will play his love interest. But who knows, maybe they’ll meet in a co-ed punch-up?
