Diane Warren lined up an all-star girl group including Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper and Gloria Estefan to sing “Gonna Be You,” from the film 80 for Brady.
“I love great artists,” Warren said Thursday at Deadline’s Sound and Screen Film event. “I love iconic artists.”
Warren had written songs for Estefan and Carlisle before. Parton was a first.
“She doesn’t need me,” Warren said of the country legend.
Producer Damon Elliott coordinated recording all of the artists in different locations. Carlisle was in Mexico City and Estefan in Miami, for example.
“None of them are in L.A.,” Warren said.
During her long music career, Warren has written for such varied artists as Trisha Yearwood, Aerosmith and Starship. Warren said she still gets turned down, but her persistence often pays off with big hits.

If you’ve ever wondered when it was that Michel Gondry, the gifted French director of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” became the world’s most annoying filmmaker, you might say the answer is, “He always was.” Yet no one, including me, quite thinks of him that way. That’s because the few works of his that have come to prominence possess a special combination of facility and charm. I adore “Eternal Sunshine,” a virtuoso movie that bends your brain and breaks your heart at the same time. You might simply choose to characterize it as the masterpiece of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, but the truth is that Gondry directed it — the leaps in time, the emotionally convulsive performances of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet — with a masterful sense of play and gravitational control.

This post contains spoilers for "Black Mirror" season 3, episode 4 "San Junipero."
Leave it to "Black Mirror" to make an episode involving euthanasia somehow hopeful. The Emmy-winning "San Junipero" has been hailed as "the show's finest hour" -- it topped our ranking of episodes from the first three seasons of "Black Mirror" in 2016, and was again near the top in our updated ranking of all five seasons in 2022. Now, with "Black Mirror" season 6 on the way in June 2023, it's as good a time as any to go back, revisit old episodes, and perhaps wax nostalgic about the highs and lows of the series.
Consider it a form of "immersive nostalgia therapy," of the kind that Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) undergo in "San Junipero." The episode is unique for "Black Mirror," not only because it's a love story with what could be interpreted as a happy ending, but because...

There are tons of songs with George Harrison‘s best slide guitar work. The former Beatle adopted the style in the late 1960s after he realized he needed to freshen up his sound after playing the sitar for so long. He’d lost touch with his guitar. Thankfully, he started playing slide. Here are 10 of his best slide songs.
George Harrison | Bettmann/Getty Images 10. ‘My Sweet Lord’
George’s triple album All Things Must Pass has some of his best slide guitar work, especially on “My Sweet Lord.” The song would be nothing without the slide that plays a beautiful melody. It blends into the chorus of “Hallelujah” and “Hare Krishna” perfectly. By 1970 George hadn’t been playing slide for very long, but he embraced it wholeheartedly on this tune.
9. ‘Wah-Wah’
“Wah- Wah” is a jumble of sounds, but you can make out George’s perfect slide work throughout the song.

Lana Del Rey’s songs feature a lot of references to classic rock. Sometimes she subverts the songs she mentions. For example, she contracted herself with the main character of an Elton John song.
Lana Del Rey | Chelsea Lauren / Contributor 5. ‘Born to Die’
One of Del Rey’s earliest singles shows off her eclectic taste in music. At one point in the track, she quotes the Christian hymn “Amazing Grace.” She also quotes Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” According to The Guardian, “Walk on the Wild Side” is an ode to 1970s hedonism that references personalities from Andy Warhol’s Factory.
Del Rey does this all in a song that’s more musically indebted to trip-hop and baroque pop than either hymn books or Reed. “Born to Die” proves Del Rey is great at creating fascinating juxtapositions — and great at making songs as well.

The pre-game Grammys celebrations rolled into town, luring everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Trevor Noah to hit the scene to see Latto, Anitta and other new chart-rising musicians perform. Meanwhile, Oscar nominations narrowed the field as the awards season raged on, with AARP holding a glittery awards show as “Elvis” stalwarts Austin Butler and Baz Luhrmann continued to be the Energizer Bunny duo on the party scene. Tom Brady quit football and started his Hollywood career this week, too; apparently no one told him that releasing a movie in January is not prime time.

M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Knock At The Cabin’ To Knock ‘Avatar 2’ Out Of No. 1 Spot – Box Office Preview
After reigning over the box office for the past seven weekends, 20th Century Studios/Disney/Lightstorm’s four-time Oscar-nominated Avatar: The Way of Water will cede No. 1 to Universal’s M. Night Shyamalan thriller Knock at the Cabin, which is set to do 15 million-17 million per tracking sources at 3,600 theaters.
Reviews haven’t hit yet on the feature take of Paul Tremblay’s national bestseller The Cabin at the End of the World, and we won’t know until we’re in the thick of the weekend with audience exits whether this pic over-indexes or not. The better the surprise in a Shyamalan ending, the better the box office. Helping Knock at the Cabin‘s ticket sales are Uni’s grab of Plf and Dolby auditoriums.

Three months after the release of Alvvays’ Blue Rev — one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Albums of 2022 — the Canadian indie rock band made their late-night television debut Tuesday with a performance of the LP’s standout track “Belinda Says.”
The group brought along a string section for the Tonight Show rendition of the track that singer Molly Rankin told Rolling Stone was the most resonant track on Alvvays’ latest album. “Belinda Says” is a nod to Eighties pop, with the song title and lyrics referencing Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.

"Meet the Robinsons" was a fun kids' film about a boy who ends up traveling through time and meeting a strange family from the future. Released after Disney's renaissance era and before its revival era, this movie has largely been forgotten in the 15 years since. That's a shame because it's actually pretty good and the story itself holds up, even if the animation doesn't.
Considering how interested the movie itself is in the idea of changing the past, it's tempting to look back at the movie and wonder what could've happened if things had gone a little differently. As covered in /Film's oral history of the movie, "Meet the Robinsons" was in production hell for a long time, always "on the verge of entering production" but never quite doing so. Although the first draft was written in 1989, the movie didn't come out in until 2007. During this period, a couple of...

Terry Hall, the longtime voice of legendary ska group The Specials has died after what the band termed a brief illness. He was 63.
Hall and the Specials reached their widest appeal with the haunting, socially conscious “Ghost Town,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the U.K. singles charts in 1981. The song was a commentary on economic strife in Margaret Thatcher’s England and the social unrest of the era, including riots that year in Britain. It was named “Single of the Year” by all three of the major UK music magazines.
The Specials were formed in the late ’70s by songwriter/keyboardist Dammers, vocalist Tim Strickland, guitarist/vocalist Lynval Golding, drummer Silverton Hutchinson and bassist Horace Panter (a.k.a. Sir Horace Gentleman). Strickland was replaced by Hall shortly after the band’s formation. They were at the vanguard of the the 2 Tone ska revival of the late 1970s in Britain,...

Hulu’s limited series “Pam & Tommy” has been praised not just for its performances, but for its soundtrack. The music has been such a solid mix of jams from both the 1990s and earlier that Hulu has been releasing weekly Spotify playlists for listeners to keep the music flowing. The finale airs Wednesday, and contains two poignant needle drops that drive home the themes the series has been exploring all season long.

Dave Grohl has had a lot of memorable Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nights during the past decade. In 2013, he donned a kimono and blond wig to induct Rush and rock out with them on “2112.” The next year, Nirvana entered the Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility and he played their music with Krist Novoselic for the first time since Kurt Cobain died in 1994. Many of this year’s contenders have been eligible far longer than that: Kate Bush, Devo, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Chaka Khan, Carole King (already inducted as a writer), LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner (already inducted with Ike and Tina Turner group) and Dionne Warwick. First-timers on the ballot also include Mary J. Blige and Fela Kuti.
We asked you in a recent poll which overlooked band was your top choice to finally be inducted. The Go-Go’s won that poll.

The Go-Go’s are releasing their documentary of the same name this coming winter, featuring interviews with Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine, and Jane Wiedlin. Part of the film focuses on the band’s efforts to write a new song, “Club Zero,” about female empowerment — and they dropped the video for the track Friday.
Directed by Alison Ellwood, the documentary first premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival before airing on Showtime during the summer, when the Covid-19 pandemic made a wide theatrical release out of the question.

Although they’ve never really been seriously considered by official voters, The Go-Go’s are your favorites for 2021 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They received 20% of the vote in our recent poll asking which snubbed band most deserves to be chosen to be inducted. Melissa Etheridge was tops in our separate poll about overlooked female artists. Look out for our poll featuring male artists soon.
The all-female group from the 1980s originally was started by Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Elissa Bello and Margot Olavarria. Other members who would most likely receive induction would be Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine and Paula Jean Brown. They beat out Duran Duran with 13% and The B-52’s with 11%.
At the delayed 2020 induction ceremony for the Hof, bands Depeche Mode, Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and T-Rex are finally getting their due.

The Go-Go’s aren’t in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. It’s a fact repeated quite a few times in Alison Ellwood’s documentary on the titular band, and “The Go-Go’s” doesn’t just lift the veil on the Los Angeles punk band-turned-pop goddesses but also attempts to cast an eye on the misogyny of a music industry that hasn’t given the band their due. “The Go-Go’s” lit the world on fire, and while Ellwood’s documentary might not do the same thing, it’s a great crash course.
Ellwood’s name, frankly, is worth the Showtime subscription in itself. She helmed the utterly brilliant documentary on the Laurel Canyon music scene for Epix earlier this year, and if you saw that, then it’s hard to avoid comparisons with “The Go-Go’s” despite the fact the two very different musical stylings. Elwood brings...
