“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” director Marielle Heller didn’t want Tom Hanks to wear any prosthetics when playing Fred Rogers in the biopic, which was inspired by the Esquire article “Can You Say … Hero?” by Tom Junod (played by Matthew Rhys as a character named Lloyd Vogel). Heller felt such measures would throw up a barrier between the audience and the performance. Hanks, for one, was happy to hear that.

Seventeen different films, including the short-listed Oscar entries “Stan & Ollie,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Vice” and “Black Panther,” have received nominations for the Make Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild’s 6th Annual Muahs Guild Awards.
Nine of those films received two nominations in the guild’s five movie categories: The five that are also on the Oscar makeup and hair short list, plus “A Star Is Born,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Widows” and “Mary Poppins.”
