Felix Leiter, the CIA agent who assisted James Bond in both novels and on screen, is finally getting into the spotlight on his own via a new series of comic book adventures authorized by the Ian Fleming estate. The comics will be written by James Robinson with artwork by Aaron Campbell, both of whom have impressive credentials in the industry. The series will be published by Dynamite. Based on the preliminary artwork, this ain't your grandad's version of Felix Leiter. In the Bond films he tends to be as dapper and sophisticated as 007 himself but the comics will present Leiter as a freelance investigator who looks more "Miami Vice" than "Casino Royale". According to the publicity, Leiter will still be involved in the world of espionage. Bond fans have long griped about the character of Leiter not being used to his fullest potential on screen. Not helping...

Dark Shadows #1
Written by Stuart Manning
Script by Aaron Campbell
Colors by Carlos Lopez
Letters by Troy Peteri
Covers by Aaron Campbell, Francesco Francavilla
Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: November 2nd, 2011
Cover Price: $3.99
I came into this comic fresh. I had heard of Dark Shadows before, but was not familiar with it, and had never seen the TV show or read any of the previous comics. After reading this, that might change.
Writer Stuart Manning does an incredible job introducing the world of Dark Shadows to the reader, yet still leaving Plenty of mystery and intrigue to the imagination. I really felt like I was reading some old Tomb of Dracula issues. Very creepy atmosphere without crossing the line into full blown horror. Having the book set in 1971 is an interesting twist, as it never really plays into the story. In fact, you don't really even notice it. Not even in the fashions or hairdos.

I’m a Green Hornet fanboy, admittedly and proudly. I smiled goofily through the first, second, and seventh viewing of the trailer for Michel Gondry’s film, and I have eagerly been picking up Kevin Smith’s long-sought interpretation of the character. (Have you noticed the eerie similarities in the premises of both, by the way? I know it’s a common trope in superhero stories, but it’s almost one for one!)
But we’re not here to talk about those Green Hornets – I like those Green Hornets. I even flipped when I saw an autographed Van Williams picture at the local Southern California Comics. I’m also a fan of Matt Wagner, whose Sandman Mystery Theater was a seminal read in shaping my love of all things crime comics as well as noir. For all the levity that seems to pour out of the Smith/ Rogen and Goldberg versions,...
