Exclusive: Josh Swindell, a former pro skater who is set to be the central subject of a forthcoming skating biopic from MindRiot Entertainment, has signed with The Bks Agency in London.
The agency will handle Swindell’s literary representation and they are currently out to publishers with Swindell’s memoir, which is the basis of MindRiot’s biopic.
Swindell was one of the most celebrated pro skaters of his generation and had been regarded as the future of the sport by grandees such as Christian Hosoi, Tony Hawk, and Steve Caballero. He also crossed over into motocross and is still sponsored by Vans. In October 1995, however, Swindell was convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of Keith Ogden, whom he beat to death outside a bar in Azusa, California. He was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison and was released in 2012 after spending almost 20 years behind bars. The case...

"Tony is always competing against Tony." “So here I am, doing everything I can. Holding on to what I am, pretending I’m a superman.” If those Goldfinger lyrics conjure very specific memories for you, you likely had a videogame console in the late 1990s or early 2000s and were addicted to the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games. The phenomenon of the videogame and its impact on the world of skateboarding at large is now the subject of a new documentary.
Pretending I’m a Superman – The Tony Hawk Video Game Story is set to arrive in mid-August, well-timed to land just before new ports arrive on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PCs a few weeks later. Directed by Ludvig Gür, the first trailer has now landed, which specifically explores the angle of how the game changed the global interest in the sport. Backed by Tony Hawk himself, he said, “Pretending I’m a Superman is a robust,...

The news that the first two “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” video games were getting HD remasters has been one of the year’s best surprises. Now, fans of the franchise have more to look forward to. Upcoming documentary “Pretending I’m a Superman” chronicles the lasting influence of the classic skating game and how it affected Hawk’s career.
Here’s the documentary’s synopsis, per distributor Wood Entertainment: In 1999, the video game “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” shook the world when it sold 9 million copies upon release and forever changed the skateboarding scene. “Pretending I’m a Superman” tells the story behind the game that changed lives and shaped a generation.
“In the ‘90s everything about skateboarding was an ‘us versus them’ mentality,” Hawk says in the documentary’s trailer. “I was a fading vert skater, my income was getting cut in half every month, and so...

The upcoming remaster of “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2” managed to nab the entire original roster for what’s being touted a very “faithful” new look at the classic skateboarding games — but it’s also getting some new additions.
Activision Blizzard announced on Tuesday the full roster of new skaters joining the lineup: Nyjah Huston, Leo Baker, Leticia Bufoni, Aori Nishimura, Lizzie Armanto, Shane O’Neill, Riley Hawk and Tyshawn Jones. They join the previously announced lineup of skaters returning from the original game, including Steve Caballero, Geoff Rowley, Bucky Lasek, Elissa Steamer, Kareem Campbell, Andrew Reynolds, Bob Burnquist, Eric Koston, Rodney Mullen, Jamie Thomas, Rune Glifberg, Chad Muska and, of course, Tony Hawk.
“Modern-day skateboarding originated from a generation of skaters who grew up playing the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games,” said Michelle Bresaw, VP of product management and marketing at Activision, in a statement. “The world-class pro...

Skateboarding fans will soon be able to relive some of their fond childhood memories thanks to the announcement of a certain long-awaited remaster yesterday.
Developed by Vicarious Visions, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 contains remastered versions of the first game and its sequel, elevating them to modern-day standards with a fresh coat of paint and gorgeous 4K visuals. Every halfpipe, grind rail and backstreet skate park you did endless laps of back in the day in pursuit of a high score will be exactly as you remember it, promises the studio, including all original maps, skaters and music from the iconic late 90s-era soundtrack.
A number of new features will also be present, though we’ve yet to learn exactly what these are. Which is perfectly fine, as there’s still plenty of time to go until release day rolls around and you can expect more on that over the coming months.

Several months ago, we began to hear rumors that the first two Tony Hawk games would be getting the remaster treatment, and fans were incredibly excited with the idea of playing through some of the best skateboarding titles ever. Unfortunately, Activision has remained silent on the topic of re-releases… until now.
Earlier today, the publishing giant finally pulled back the curtain, revealing a remastered collection that packages Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 into one bundle. This is great news for fans of the franchise, which, if we’re being frank, has kind of fallen by the wayside over the past decade.
For those wondering what these re-releases will include, here’s a bit of a rundown. The collection will include completely overhauled visuals, online play (which was never implemented in the original games), and a more robust course creation system, for those who like to show off their creative talents.

Professional skater Tony Hawk’s documentary, “Pretending I’m a Superman,” has found a home, Variety has learned exclusively.
Wood Entertainment has bought worldwide rights to “Pretending I’m a Superman – The Tony Hawk Video Game Story.”
Hawk and Activision launched the initial “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” series in 1999, selling 9 million copies and spawning a total of 17 versions of the game by 2015. The film, directed by Ludvig Gür, tells the story of how Hawk evolved from a skater to a video game mogul, and the near extinction of skateboarding culture before exploding into the mainstream in the early 2000s.
Wood Entertainment CEO Tara Wood negotiated the deal with producer Ralph D’Amato, a producer on the “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” franchise, on behalf of D’Amato Productions.

Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Rodney Mullen, Lance Mountain ... Even non-skateboarders will recognize some of these names. The impact they had on skateboarding in the 1980s made them household names, rock stars of sorts, and legitimized skateboarding as both an art and a sport. They were a group of kids, some as young as twelve, formed into an elite team by Stacy Peralta, who had partnered with George Powell to form Powell-Peralta Skateboards. The team became known as the Bones Brigade.
When I was 12 years old, I saw an ad in the back of a magazine to "join" the Bones Brigade. "It's not a death metal band, an extreme diet club or historic dominoes association."
The name "Bones Brigade" could certainly apply to any of the above, but skate enthusiasts will know it refers to what many consider to be the greatest skateboarding team of all time.
Director Stacy Peralta ("Dogtown and the Z Boys," "Riding Giants,") returns to the park once again for a look at this gang of teenage misfits who, for most of the '80s, dominated the industry with their complete dedication to a disrespected art form: skateboarding.
"Bones Brigade" features interviews with Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill and many more. Check out Caballero waxing (ripping? shredding?) nostalgic about the old days in our exclusive clip from the film.
"Bones Brigade: An Autobiography" will hit Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on Nov. 6.

Powell Peralta’s Bones Brigade skate team is hands down the most influential group in the history of skateboarding. They’re largely responsible for making the sport and the industry what it is today, for better or worse depending on your point of view. Stacey Peralta’s (“Dogtown and Z-Boys”) new documentary, “Bones Brigade”, made the film festival rounds this year, and hits Blu-ray, DVD, and on-demand November 6. Check out this new trailer for the release. Guys like Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, Mike McGill, and Tommy Guerrero, were the first rock stars of the sport, and helped transform skateboarding from a fringe activity to a legitimate mainstream sport. This garnered them tons of praise, but almost as much spite and contempt from traditionalists who wanted skateboarding to remain pure. This is a debate that still rages today, though given how frequently you find skateboarding featured on Espn,...

Here's another great trailer for Stacy Peralta's latest documentary Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, which follows the rise of skateboarding in the 1980's. This was such an incredible documentary, and a must see for anyone that is a fan of Tony Hawk and the skateboarding scene. Hell, even if you're not, it's still an amazing documentary worth watching!
The Bones Brigade is a skateboarding team that was organized by 70's skateboarding legend and the film's director Stacy Peralta in the early 80's. He set out to start his own team of skaters, gathered together a group of no-name kids that had a deep passion for skateboarding, and mentored them to the top. This team produced some of the greatest, most legendary skateboarders of all time including Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Rodney Mullen, who I admired as a kid growing up in the 80's.

This time it’s the 4th annual Oakland Underground Film Festival that is expanding its horizons into a blowout four-day, much more densely packed affair, running on Sept. 27-30 at several different locations.
Expanding on the types of films they screen, this year Oakuff is jammed pack with a wide variety of documentaries, thrillers, a bevy of short films and a special tribute to blaxploitation films hosted by BadAzz MoFo’s David Walker.
The fest opens on the 27th with skateboarding filmmaker Stacy Peralta’s latest, Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, which documents his own involvement with California board culture along with peers like Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen. Following that will be Ya’Ke Smith’s complex drama about the effects of child molestation.

Bones Brigade: An Autobiography was one of the best and most entertaining documentaries that I saw up at Sundance this year, and today we bring you a great new trailer!
This team produced some of the greatest, most legendary skateboarders of all time including Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, and Rodney Mullen, who I admired as a kid growing up in the 80's. These guys took skateboarding to a whole new level of awesomeness, brought the sport into the mainstream, and turned it into a booming business that they could make a ton of money from.

To celebrate their 5th anniversary, the Arizona Underground Film Festival has expanded to a whopping nine nights on Sept. 21-29 for a cinematic event the likes of Tucson has never seen before!
The shenanigans kick off with the opening night film The Legend of Kaspar Hauser, an experimental Italian feature directed by Davide Manuli and starring Vincent Gallo as the hero and the villain to a strange young boy, then end with the closing night film Jason M. Solomon’s nostalgic documentary 7 Years Underground: A 60′s Tale, which profiles the legendary Cafe Au Go Go in NYC that hosted such up-and-coming acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, George Carlin, Lily Tomlin and more.
In between those two films lies a twisted carnage of movie mayhem, including Spencer Parsons’ demented homage to ’70s mystery cartoons Saturday Morning Massacre; Michael Melamedoff exploitative semi-doc The Exhibitionists; Stephen Amis’ Australian WWII sci-fi...

The 5th annual Arizona Underground Film Festival, which will run on Sept. 21-29 at various venues around Tucson, Arizona, has officially released the titles of six of the films that will be screening at this year’s event.
It’s clear from this half-dozen batch of movies that the fest will be sticking to its successful formula that has allowed it to grow by leaps and bounds since 2008. That formula consists of offering up a diverse batch of fun genre fare, controversial exploitation films, crowd-pleasing music documentaries and somewhat unclassifiable cinematic oddities.
The titles and brief descriptions are below. The full lineup will be available on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film in early September.
The Legend of Kaspar Hauser, dir. Davide Manuli. In this Italian update of the Werner Herzog classic film, which was based on a true story, controversial American actor Vincent Gallo tackles the dual roles...

Ahead of its Sundance premiere, we got a 3-minute-plus extended look at the next film from Dogtown and Z-Boys director Stacy Peralta, a documentary titled The Bones Brigade: An Autobiography. Now with premiere many months ago and the fall approaching, the filmmakers have decided to self-release the film, and along with it we’ve got a new trailer and the first poster.
Following the famous troupe of skaters, it chronicles the rise of skateboarding and its effect on an entire generation. Instead of a kinetic punk-rock aesthetic, it looks like an emotionally touching portrayal of the sport judging from this look. Check out a poster and trailer below via The Playlist for the film that also features Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Rodney Mullen.
Synopsis:
Today skateboarding is omnipresent. Take a walk down any street in any town, and you are destined to see someone riding a skateboard.

Most people don't have enough happen in their life to make one documentary, but it turns out Stacy Peralta has enough to make at least two. Eleven years after he delved into his own adolescent history with “Dogtown And Z-Boys,” Peralta has made another skateboarding doc about the next phase of his career after the Z-boys. When Peralta founded his skateboard company Powell Peralta in the late '70s, he brought together a bunch of unknown amateur skaters, cherry picked from around the USA -- including Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Rodney Mullen, among others -- and created a skate team called the Bones Brigade. In case you know less about skating than me, these guys pretty much all grew up to be the top competitors of the 1980s, and went on to inspire and shape the next generation of skaters and their culture -- in short,...

For being such a documentary hotshot, Stacy Peralta is one of the coolest directors I've ever met. His films, which include the classic skateboarding film "Dogtown and Z-Boys," "Riding Giants" about surfing, and the definitive South La gang film, "Crips and Bloods: Made in America," are just as cool. Both Peralta and his films are unpretentious, straight-to-the-point and completely affecting. Here at Toronto's Hot Docs' Doc Talks, Cinema Eye's Aj Schnack sat down with Peralta, who is in town promoting his film "Bones Brigade: An Autobiography," about the group of skateboarding legends he was a part of in the 1980's, and "No Room for Rock Stars," a film he produced about the Vans Warped Tour. Peralta's friends, it turns out, asked him six years ago to make "Bones Brigade," about the skateboarding team that included Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Tommy Guerrero and...

Bones Brigade: An Autobiography was a hell of a great documentary and one of my favorite movies at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The film give us an in-depth personal look at the Bones Brigade skateboarding team put together by Stacy Peralta in the 1980's, and it included the boys who changed skateboarding forever: Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, and Rodney Mullen.
The video featurette includes interview with Peralta and many of the other cast members mixed in with some footage from the film. To watch a film clip click here, and to read my review click here. Watch the video below that was shot in Park City during the festival, and tell us what you think!

Bones Brigade: An Autobiography Directed by: Stacy Peralta Featuring: Tony Alva, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, Stacy Peralta, George Powell In his break-out documentary, Dogtown and Z Boys, director Stacy Peralta told us the story of how he and his friends turned skateboarding from a goofy novelty for dorks and children into an extreme sport. Now, with Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, Peralta shows us how the next generation of skaters (that he personally scouted, coached, and sponsored) turned skateboarding into a worldwide phenomenon. Prepare yourselves for 90 minutes of fluorescent t-shirts and Flock of Seagulls haircuts. Like most historical docs, Bones Brigade is driven by talking heads and archival footage, but there is such an incredible array of amazing archival footage here, much of it from Peralta's own personal collection, that the film is never dull. What is surprising about the footage, most of...

"We pioneered the way to make money at skateboarding." - Lance Mountain Before the 80's skateboard boom, the industry had hit another downward spiral so bad it had been coined the "Dark Ages." Zephyr, the world's biggest in-your-face skate team at the time had disbanded and the sport started fading away (again). Soon after, Stacy Peralta (one of Zephyr's former riders) built and managed a new team with fresh, young talent. He scouted and handpicked them by way of contests and friend recommendations. Six riders would make up this team: Rodney Mullen, Lance Mountain, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, and Tommy Guerrero, and they would be known as the Bones Brigade. Not knowing it at the time, these six misfits would forever change...

Here's a film clip from Stacy Peralta's (Riding Giants, Dog Town and the Z Boys) new documentary Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, which is one of the best films that I've seen up at the Sundance Film Festival so far. It's a documentary that follows the 1980's skateboarding team the Bones Brigade, who changed the sport forever. This was a team of young unknown skaters who were brought together by Peralta in the early 80's to kick skateboarding's ass.
The video below is listed as a trailer, but it's actually a film clip from the movie showing Tony Hawk going against his rival Christian Hosoi, and goes into detail about the fans and their rivalry. I absolutely loved this movie, and it's one you have to watch! Even if you're not into skating, it's still just a great documentary.
Check out the clip and tell us what you think!

Due to my lack of research preparing for the Sundance Film Festival, Bones Brigade: An Autobiography wasn't even on my radar. When I first saw the title I wasn't even sure if it was the "Bones Brigade" skateboarding team that I grew up knowing, reading about, and watching. Then when I saw that it was directed by Stacy Peralta I knew that it was, and I was excited as hell to see it!

If you are anything like me, then most of your skateboarding knowledge comes from the Tony Hawk: Pro Skater videogame series. Who knew the famous skater had stirred up some controversy as an initial outcast? Exploring that and more director Stacy Peralta returns to Sundance with a new documentary titled Bones Brigade, after the famous troupe of skaters. Following up the much-praised Dogtown and Z-Boys, this looks to be just an engaging and informative. Check out a trailer below via THR for the film that also features Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Rodney Mullen.

In the early ’80s, skateboarding was fading away until Stacy Peralta brought a profoundly talented group of outsiders together and dubbed them the Bones Brigade.

The annual Sundance Film Festival, which kicks off this weekend, is one of the most renowned film festivals on the circuit and has been known to launch the careers of many a rising talent. The Festival has changed over the decades from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators outside the Hollywood system to a now media extravaganza for the Hollywood industry. One thing that hasn’t changed is the number of great movies which premiere each and every year. It’s a true haven for creativity and this year has one of the best line-ups in recent memory. From niche horror to promising indie debuts, the festival is screening 110 feature-length films from 31 countries, so I’ve decided to narrow it down for everyone. Some movies are already getting buzz, whether for star power, the directors behind the camera or because of an intriguing premise. Here are the movies you...

Sundance kicks off tomorrow and the journey for many films that will hit your arthouse and garner awards season heat will begin in Park City, Utah. While the lineup of feature films is always impressive, this year in particular features an equally strong array of documentaries with subject matter in a wide range of topics and interests. So here's a few that might catch fire over the next week or so. First up, skater/filmmaker Stacy Peralta, the man behind "Dogtown & Z-Boys," returns with "Bones Brigade." Focusing this time on the '80s skate scene and culture, the film will chronicle folks like Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Rodney Mullen. THR has dropped the first clip from the film, and it's fascinating account of Tony Hawk, who reveals his near dominance of the scene at such a young age was threatening to eat away...

Sega is staging a very unorthodox winter event to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th birthday and the upcoming release of Sonic Generations. Instead of your typical launch party, Sega will be partnering with Asa Entertainment to create the first Sonic Generations of Skate competition. Sonic may not be an skater by nature, but he has shown his deft in ice skating in several Winter Olympic video games that pit Sonic characters versus Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. This competition focuses on skateboarding, a talent Sonic showed off last year during the launch of Microsoft’s Kinect in Sonic Free Riders. On Saturday, October 22, Sonic and skateboarding fans will descend on Venice Beach, California (on the basketball courts near Muscle Beach), the iconic location where performance skateboarding planted it roots. Twelve of skateboarding’s most elite athletes, including Andy Macdonald, Lincoln Ueda, Pierre Luc Gagnon, Steve Caballero and Tony Hawk will compete for a cash.
