Before there was the popular two-part horror film franchise “It,” a 1990 mini-series featuring Tim Curry as the child-eating clown Pennywise scared the bejesus out of a generation of television watchers.
“Pennywise: The Story of It,” offers up a behind-the-scenes look at the making of that earlier adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, which has achieve cult classic status over subsequent decades. The documentary will receive its world premiere on Oct. 15 at The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia.
The film, which is co-directed by John Campopiano (“Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary”; “Snapper: The Man-Eating Turtle Movie That Never Got Made”) and Christopher Griffiths, was several years in the making and includes interviews with many of the key players. That includes “It” cast and crew members Tim Curry, Seth Green, Richard Thomas, Tim Reid, Richard Masur, Emily Perkins, Tommy Lee Wallace, Larry D. Cohen, Bart Mixon, Victoria Burrows,...

There are certain movies that, as you are witnessing them for the first time, feel like something of an event, and that is precisely my experience with Stephen King’s It, which first aired on ABC in November 1990. I can remember everything about watching both installments—how terrified I was of Tim Curry as Pennywise, how much I genuinely loved those kids and how awesome it was to see one of my favorite actors, John Ritter, show up in a horror movie (based on a Stephen King novel nonetheless). It was a landmark in many regards, but to me, as a fan, it's monumental because it truly was one of the first things I ever saw air on network television that genuinely scared the hell out of me.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Better call your agent. AMC’s “Breaking Bad” prequel “Better Call Saul,” which centers on shady attorney Saul Goodman, played by Bob Odenkirk, will be cast by Sherry Thomas and Sharon Bialy, Backstage has learned. The Culver City-based casting directors also cast the original series. “Better Call Saul,” which was ordered straight to series by AMC, will focus on the evolution of Odenkirk’s character before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer. “Breaking Bad” series regular Jonathan Banks will also appear in the spinoff. The show is scheduled to premiere in November 2014. Meanwhile, the Philippe Petit biopic, which will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the French high-wire artist who walked between the Twin Towers in the 1970s, is set to be cast by Victoria Burrows and Scot Boland. Shooting on the Robert Zemeckis picture, titled "To Reach the Clouds," is slated to begin in May.

It feels like Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been gone forever – since November! – but happily for us it’s back tonight, and the team’s search for Coulson is on. For better or worse, they’re not alone in their search, since tonight they’re joined by Agent Hand (Victoria Burrows), whom we already know is very much a company woman.
Here’s a clip:
Clip: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Episode 11
Executive Producer Jeffrey Bell told Marvel.com that the midseason finale last month was when all the pieces from the prior episodes started coming together, and the rest of the season will continue to ramp it up:
For us, this is right in the pocket of all the stuff we’d set up… There’s Mike from the pilot, and the eye from [episode] four, and Centipede stuff from [episode] five, and Coulson’s journey and what’s going on with Skye.

Casting director Victoria Burrows has been working with Robert Zemeckis for more than 18 years, so the decision to cast the drama-thriller “Flight” wasn’t a difficult one. “He always does amazing projects, and this was a gem in the way it was written and the way he wanted to shoot it,” says Burrows. With the material she was given, Burrows says the five-month casting process went relatively smoothly. “We put out a breakdown, and all the agents loved the scripts, so the actors were drawn to it like babes to sugar,” says Burrows. From there, it was just a matter of putting together the right ensemble. Denzel Washington stars as Capt. Whip Whitaker, a pilot struggling with alcohol addiction, and is surrounded by a strong ensemble of high-caliber actors, including John Goodman (“The Artist”), Oscar winner Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”), and Oscar nominee Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”). Burrows says one...

In video games and feature films—such as 2007's "Beowulf" and the upcoming "The Adventures of Tintin"—performance capture is an increasingly popular method for bringing characters to life. Also called motion capture (or mocap), it involves actors wearing formfitting body suits that allow cameras to track their movements from every angle in a stage area called the volume. Those movements are then used to animate a computer-generated character. The technology presents a unique challenge and opportunity for performers."You have to imagine your entire world, so as an actor it's sort of the ultimate exercise," says actor Woody Schultz. "You show up and you play." For the theatrically trained Schultz, that was literally true on his first performance-capture film, "The Polar Express."Casting director Victoria Burrows called him in for a regular audition, or so he thought. The role was a 9-year-old boy. "I didn't quite understand how a 6-foot-2 actor was supposed to.

I want one of two things to happen regarding The Hobbit:1. Kill this movie so I can stop writing about it. Seriously, it's been what...2 years and nothing is happening? It still isn't greenlit? It's not because I'm lazy (ok, it is) it's because I feel cheated everytime I write a story about it because I have no idea if it'll even happen. And I'm sure readers are getting annoyed as well.2. Greenlight the damn thing so we can all move on with our lives and Jackson can finally breathe a sigh of relief. If this movie gets made, I'm glad he's the one behind the helm.THR has the exclusive on Peter Jackson meeting with actors for the movie that isn't greenlit yet: "The Hobbit" still has not been officially greenlighted, but director Peter Jackson is in Los Angeles this week quietly meeting with actors. The casting trip,...

The Hobbit has yet to be officially greenlit, Peter Jackson has yet to confirm that he's directing, but it's being reported that Jackson is currently in Los Angeles meeting with actors to take on roles in the upcoming two-part Middle Earth adventure. He will also be making trips out to New York and the U.K. to meet with actors as well. He's on a good ol' fashioned actor pilgrimage. He's working with casting director Victoria Burrows on assembling what will likely be a large, international cast for the project.
THR reports that the negotiations between Warner Brs. and Jackson directing the two Hobbit films is close to being over. Of course it still currently comes down to MGM and their financial troubles.
Warners, which is acting as the lead studio on the co-production, is furiously negotiating with MGM, which is being steered by a committee of creditors and financial stakeholders.

The following is a list of the top 25 Power Casting Directors in film and television (including Casting Director of the Year, Debra Zane; see page 9). We began with more than 100 candidates. In some cases, collaborations were so closely tied that we considered multiple people as one entity. Several drafts later, all 25 spots were cast.Notably omitted from the list are in-house casting executives at studios and networks, the inclusion of whom would have ballooned our list to 50 or more. But read about them online at www.backstage.com/spotlight. Focusing on independent casting directors leveled the playing field and highlighted people whose puissance is not affected by one scale-tipping affiliation. Now, on to the top 25!Kerry BardenCan you imagine Monster's Ball starring Erykah Badu, or American Psycho starring Leonardo DiCaprio? Kerry Barden can, because he saw them read the parts. "There are so many great actors that sometimes it's a...

Like many of today's top casting directors, Victoria Burrows got her start when personal computers were nonexistent, FedEx was in its infancy, faxes and videotape machines were rare, and black-and-white glossies were everywhere. "It used to be hard-copy pictures, then sit down and meet an actor," says Burrows with little nostalgia. "Often, you wouldn't tape them; you would just read them and do callbacks. That's all gone because of computers."Now, working on such motion-capture films as Disney's A Christmas Carol and Mars Needs Moms!, she spends her days in casting sessions with partner Scot Boland, calculating how actors' performances will translate in neoprene wetsuits covered with white dots and subsequently rendered by 3-D animation software. The auditions are uploaded to a computer and stored with other information on the servers of Cast It, a popular database management system that allows them to be viewed instantly by anyone with a password to the company account,...
