As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released last September, franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The official announcement came in December, along with a release date: September 27th. But over the last few months, the filmmakers have come to realize they need some extra time to make Saw XI something special, so the release has been pushed back a year, to September 26, 2025. So Lionsgate has unveiled a teaser trailer asking fans to play the waiting game, and you can check it out in the embed above.

20 years ago, Saw made an indelible impact on the horror genre. Not only did it usher in the so-called “torture porn” subgenre that would become synonymous with the aughts, but it also launched the career of filmmaker James Wan, who has firmly cemented his place among the masters of horror with follow-ups like The Conjuring and Insidious.
In the two decades since, the lucrative franchise has spawned nine sequels — 2005’s Saw II, 2006’s Saw III, 2007’s Saw IV, 2008’s Saw V, 2009’s Saw VI, 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, 2017’s Jigsaw, 2021’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and 2023’s Saw X — with a worldwide box office total of over $1 billion.
Despite being often maligned by detractors for its mindless sadism, fans are just as much invested in the series’ soap opera-esque melodrama as the innovative death traps. Formulaic though the general plots may be, the non-linear storyline is deceptively...

Following the release of Jigsaw, it wasn’t clear where the Saw franchise would go, but I doubt anyone expected Chris Rock to pitch the next evolution of the series. Spiral: From the Book of Saw starred Chris Rock as a detective tracking down a Jigsaw copycat and was the first movie in the franchise not to include Tobin Bell. Unfortunately, Spiral only grossed $40 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics, squashing any potential sequel.
However, franchise producer Mark Burg isn’t ruling out a Spiral sequel. “Maybe one day we’ll come back to doing a sequel,” Burg told GamesRadar. “Chris Rock would love to do one, but our focus, because of the success and the response to Saw X, is Saw 11.” Saw X featured the grand return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer/Jigsaw, which is clearly what the fans wanted. As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released a couple months ago, franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. Yesterday, the new sequel was officially announced, complete with a release date: Saw XI will be reaching theatres on September 27, 2024. When fans saw that announcement, they understandably jumped to the conclusion that the new film is going to be written by the team of Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, since they wrote not only Saw X but also Jigsaw and Spiral: From the Book of Saw. But, as it turns out, Goldfinger and Stolberg are not coming back for this one.

Are you ready to play another game? The "Saw" canon isn't exactly the easiest challenge for casual fans to make sense of -- Tobin Bell's John Kramer was infamously killed off way back in "Saw III," for instance, despite almost every movie since twisting itself into knots in order to include him in the action anyway -- but the series has gone on to become one of the longest-running (and most consistently-performing) horror franchises ever anyway. That streak was all but assured of continuing after the latest installment, "Saw X," earned the best reviews out of any of the movies and went on to slash its way to the top of the box office. America and, indeed, the entire world are demanding more Billy the Puppet and the maniacal Jigsaw games ... and Lionsgate has been listening.

Thanks to the massive success of Saw X, Lionsgate will officially be moving forward with Saw XI. The studio took to Instagram to reveal that Saw XI will hit theaters on September 27, 2024, almost exactly one year from the release of the latest film.

At long last, Jigsaw returned in Saw X. Set between the events of Saw and Saw II, the tenth installment is a gruesome fan-pleaser led by a franchise-best performance from Tobin Bell as John Kramer.
Along with a six-part making-of documentary and more, the film’s home video release features an audio commentary by director-editor Kevin Greutert, cinematographer Nick Matthews, and production designer Anthony Stabley.
Here are nine things I learned from the Saw X commentary…
1. Kevin Greutert was unsure about the concept until he read the script.
Greutert — who edited six previous Saw films and directed Saw VI and Saw 3D — is one of the few Saw creatives to return for Saw X, but he wasn’t sold on the initial concept.

Though it hasn't quite reached the dizzying naming heights of the "Fast & Furious" franchise, "Saw" has still managed to get creative with its titles in recent years. After going with a conventional roman numeral numbering system for its first six installments, the series got a little silly with "Saw 3D," technically the franchise's seventh installment. Next up was 2017's "Jigsaw," followed by the polarizing spin-off film "Spiral: From The Book of Saw." Though that Chris Rock-led film garnered mixed reviews, it also freed up the franchise to start trying altogether new things -- which it did this year with its tenth installment, a "Saw II" prequel with a strong visual style and a much-praised John Kramer reappearance.
After three fun movie titles, though, the latest installment was simply titled "Saw X." It's a boring title, but apparently it wasn't always the plan. A Blu-Ray special feature for the...

There are some people out there who will tell you the reason they like the "Saw" movies is because of the complex moral and ethical dilemmas they submerge their conflicted characters into. And that John Kramer, the most conflicted of them all, is among the most compelling villains in modern horror history -- if he's a true villain at all.
Well, I think everyone else is going to see heads smashed by blocks of ice and eyeballs sucked out of their sockets.
However you feel about the "Saw" movies, you can't deny that the decisive factor in their appeal is the blood, guts, and carnage. Tobin Bell's Kramer, known to his victims as Jigsaw, and his apprentices Amanda (Shawnee Smith) and Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) have devised all manner of dastardly traps over the years to unjustly punish mildly flawed people teach bad people big lessons. John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back. The most disturbing instalment of the Saw franchise yet explores the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s most personal game. Set between the events of Saw I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through devious, deranged, and ingenious traps.

The chronology of the "Saw" movies is massively complicated, and only the most dedicated researchers have dared to map out when certain events occur. Everything surrounds the vengeful trap-builder Jigsaw, aka John Kramer (Tobin Bell) a character who actually died at the end of Darren Lynn Bouseman's "Saw III," but who still appeared in several sequels thereafter. Baffling chronologies have been a feature of the "Saw" movies from the start, with James Wan's 2004 original told mostly in flashback. Indeed, one of those flashbacks also had a flashback in it.
As far as a casual observer might tell, the films take place in the following order: "Saw," then the new "Saw X," then "Saw II." "Saw III" and "Saw IV" take place over roughly the same period, with interacting timelines. The rest seem to take place more or less numerically, although each one features additional flashbacks and appearances from Bell.

Warning: this post will contain spoilers for "Saw X."
Throughout the 10 extant "Saw" movies, there have been at least 94 on-screen deaths, most of them quite gruesome. A few people do manage to escape the death traps that Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) locked them into, but many of the vengeful villain's victims aren't so lucky. Audiences have witnessed human bodies being ripped apart, burned, or colorfully torn to pieces. And we all have our favorites, don't we? Ranking the traps and/or deaths in the "Saw" movies is a common practice among horror fans. /Film even ranked all of the franchise's deaths back in 2017, when there were only 81 to sift through.
Many might agree that the "reverse bear trap" from the very first "Saw" is probably the best one. Indeed, it was so notorious, that it would be brought back for "Saw VI" and "Saw 3D." In the latter film, it finally managed to kill its wearer.

Major Spoilers for Saw X. Consider yourself warned. John Kramer is back, and with the success of Saw X, we likely haven’t seen the last of him. The latest installment of the Saw franchise has received the best reviews of the series by far, so it’s probably only a matter of time before Lionsgate announces Saw 11.

The first "Saw" movie famously launched the careers of modern horror maestros James Wan and Leigh Whannell, but they quickly moved on to different pastures. In their place, the larger "Saw" franchise -- the horror series that defined the aughts, dominated the Halloween box office for years, and inspired a bajillion pearl-clutching think pieces -- was shepherded forward by producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg, who have masterminded every single film in the series. If you want to tap into the "Saw" braintrust, to really understand how these movies are made and what drives them, these are the guys you speak with.

Horror movie villains can survive just about anything, with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and many more returning from the dead time and time again. However, when it comes to the Saw franchise, the dead stay dead, and that includes the man himself — Jigsaw (Tobin Bell).
Although Jigsaw is back in theaters with Saw X, the character actually died over fifteen years ago in Saw III, which franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules now regret. In an interview with IndieWire, the pair said that Jigsaw’s death is the one creative choice they regret. “If I had to do it again, I might not have killed Tobin Bell in ‘Saw III,’” Burg said. “That might have been a mistake.” Thanks to flashbacks, Tobin Bell was able to reprise the role of Jigsaw in every subsequent Saw sequel, with the exception of Spiral, but it’s not hard to...

“Saw X” begins with the kind of reverse time jump that only a horror franchise on its tenth film would dare to attempt. After the previous eight sequels advanced the story of John “Jigsaw” Kramer and his many imitators in a relatively linear fashion — while relying heavily on flashbacks to keep including Tobin Bell after his character’s early death — “Saw X” takes place in 2004, just three weeks after the events of the original film.

When you think of Sundance movies, you usually think of quirky, optimistic or melodramatic coming-of-age stories. Films like “Manchester by the Sea,” “Coda” or “The Big Sick.” But the movie that spawned the most successful franchise from its Sundance debut is none of those things. In January 2004, Sundance audiences were knocked on their collective butts by “Saw,” an out-of-nowhere horror flick from two unknown Australian filmmakers.
Director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell’s “Saw” offered a deceptively simple premise of two desperate men chained together in an empty room with little idea of how they got there or how to get out.
Starring Cary Elwes and Danny Glover, Monica Potter and a pre-“Lost” Michael Emerson, “Saw” inspired a new wave of grindhouse horror, films that reveled in old-school gore and a certain Rube Goldberg mentality to the kills beyond just attractive teenagers being picked off one by one.

Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review). But they’re not the only franchise mainstays that worked to bring the gory sequel to life.

The gruesome “Saw” franchise has grossed more than $1 billion at the global box office — but the original 2004 horror film was destined to be a direct-to-video curio. That is, until a pair of rollicking test screenings saved it.
“The first one we did in Camarillo [Calif.] and it scored so well that Lionsgate was convinced that we padded the audience,” franchise producer Oren Koules remembers. “So they made us do it again in Vegas, but they didn’t tell us until 6 p.m. that night where the theater was.”
Almost 20 years and nine twisty chapters later, “Saw X” (heading to theaters on Sept. 29) is returning to its franchise roots.

“The first one we did in Camarillo [Calif.] and it scored so well that Lionsgate was convinced that we padded the audience,” franchise producer Oren Koules remembers. “So they made us do it again in Vegas, but they didn’t tell us until 6 p.m. that night where the theater was.”

There are some times that you really just have to pinch yourself to make sure you’re not dreaming, and I had one of those moments as I stepped onto the infamous bathroom set of Saw. Set up at the Saw Experience in Las Vegas, it was a pleasure to get to talk all things Saw in a place straight out of that universe. While we obviously couldn’t get into spoilers producers Mark Burg, Oren Koules, director Kevin Greutert and production designer Anthony Stabley were an absolute pleasure to chat with. We went over some of the traps of the film as well as just how great it was to see John and Amanda up on film together again. Our review drops tonight, but we did post a quick reaction yesterday – check it out here. And yes, there were some very slight sequel talks so if you’re a fan of the series,...

Saw X, the tenth film in the Saw franchise, is set to reach theatres in just a few days – on September 29th, to be exact. But if you can’t wait that long to watch a good chunk of footage from the film, a clip that shows about 1 minute and 45 seconds of the movie has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above. In this clip, we see that a very unlucky fellow named Mateo has his head stuck in a trap.

"It was our desire to make a film that feels more like the early Saw movies." Lionsgate has debuted a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Saw X, the next sequel in the seemingly never-ending Saw franchise of gruesome, gory, horror movies. The first trailer arrived during the summer, and the film is ready to open in theaters very soon - just in time for spooky season. Set between the events of Saw I + II, Jigsaw travels to Mexico in hopes of trying an experimental procedure that may cure him. He later discovers that it was all just a hoax, leading him to arrange another elaborately grotesque series of fatal games for the scammers. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way with deranged, and ingenious, traps. In addition to Bell, this also stars Shawnee Smith,...

Director Kevin Greutert says that with Saw X, their goal was to make a new addition to the franchise that felt like the early Saw movies. Greutert provided a sneak peek behind the scenes at the upcoming tenth film of the popular horror franchise in a two-minute “Legacy” featurette released nine days out from the film’s theatrical debut.
Saw franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules described the September 29, 2023 release as being how they envision Saw II, with the action taking place just weeks after the end of the original Saw. Because of that, it was necessary to replicate the look of the original films down to the grittiness and color palette. “We’re working with a cinematographer here [Nick Matthews] who has just done a fabulous job,” says franchise star Tobin Bell.
Joining Bell in Saw X are Shawnee Smith, Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, Michael Beach, and Renata Vaca.

Lionsgate is clearly very aware of just how popular the Amanda Young character, played by Shawnee Smith, is with fans of the Saw franchise. Although she was killed off in Saw III, she’s back for the new sequel Saw X, since the film’s story takes place between the events of the first film and Saw II – and since she’s back, she’s getting a good amount of attention in the film’s marketing. For example: Rotten Tomatoes just got the first look at a new image from Saw X, and the focus of the image is Smith as Amanda. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
Saw X reaches theatres on September 29th.
Amanda isn’t the only dead character who’s back in a big way for this sequel, as John “Jigsaw” Kramer, played once again by Tobin Bell, is front and center here.

John “Jigsaw” Kramer, played once again by Tobin Bell, is front and center in the upcoming Saw sequel Saw X – which is indeed the tenth installment in the franchise, but takes place between the events of the first movie and Saw II. Director Kevin Greutert, who previously directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, has said that we’ll be seeing more of Jigsaw in this new movie than in any other Saw movie… and due to its place in the timeline, we’ll also be seeing the return of Shawnee Smith as his protégé Amanda Young. That’s why a new promo posted on the official Saw social media account celebrates the fact that we’ll be seeing the return of Amanda when Saw X reaches theatres on September 29th:

The new film in the Saw franchise – which is going by the title Saw X since it’s the tenth installment – is set to reach theatres on September 29th, and it’s said to be the longest Saw movie yet. Judging by the rating it has just received from the Motion Picture Association, it sounds like it’s going to be delivering plenty of the stuff Saw fans want to see over the course of that extended running time, as it has earned an R rating for sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language and some drug use. The frequently used tagline has been “If it’s Halloween, it must be Saw“, but it could just as easily be “If it’s grisly bloody violence and torture, it must be Saw“.

Attendees of this year’s Midsummer Scream got an early look at “Saw X.” The hook, as explained earlier this month, is that it’s a prequel set between the events of “Saw” and “Saw II.” That means we’ll get Tobin Bell’s alive (but not well) Jigsaw without having to awkwardly pretzel him into a story taking place after his on-screen demise.
“Saw X” follows Kramer traveling to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure that he hopes will cure his cancer. Spoiler alert: The entire operation is a scam aimed at the most vulnerable. More spoilers: John is going to get his righteous revenge, Jigsaw-style.
Kevin Greutert, who directed the quite popular “Sav VI” and the less beloved “Saw: The Final Chapter,” is back in the director’s chair. “Saw X,” which like “Saw VI” concerns the morality within the insurance industry, looks to be...
