Even the most die-hard 007 fans know that James Bond movies don’t always hit. There’s the yellow face of You Only Live Twice, the pigeon double-take in Moonraker, the surfing in Die Another Day. But never has the franchise done worse than when a certain Louisiana police officer bumbles into the otherwise solid Live and Let Die.
Yes, I’m talking about Sheriff J.W. Pepper, a loudmouth distraction who sort of makes sense in the American-set Live and Let Die, but then he somehow also shows up in Thailand to further drag down The Man With the Golden Gun.
Modern viewers meeting the character for the first time today will likely be confused by Pepper’s shtick. But to the viewers of the early 1970s, Pepper not only hit as a funny joke, but he was very much in line with Bond’s history of pop culture Johnny-come-latelyisms.

Dead Times, the project of Lee Buford (The Body) and Steven Vallot, have announced their self-titled debut album and shared the lead single “Psyche Surprises Love.”
Buford and Vallot both hail from an industrial/noise background, and Dead Times melds their particular brands of harshness into a singular unit. “Psyche Surprises Love” features discernible percussion — a sort of thwop-thwop in the distance — but the rest unfurls itself in a tapestry of chaos. Grinding noise builds to a climactic vocal crescendo courtesy of Buford, as screams of horror suddenly overwhelm the other textures.
The two musicians go way back, as it were, to their days when they shared a Providence, Rhode Island, DIY space called The Sickle in the late aughts. There, the two would start the short-lived Aum War imprint, releasing early records by The Body and Assembly of Light Choir (that have since become sought after artifacts for fans...

The Emmy Awards statuette is getting a 75th anniversary makeover.
The Television Academy confirmed that the Emmy trophy will receive a rare enhancement for the 75th annual ceremony this year. The numbers “75” will be etched in to the base of the award that features a female figure with wings holding up a globe-like sphere. The Academy noted that it drew inspiration for the move from Halley’s Comet, which returns into view every 75 years.
“We were trying to find a way to honor the historic nature of the anniversary. Emmy is all about celebrating excellence, and it has been for three quarters of a century,” said Maury McIntyre, president of the Television Academy. “Those standards really haven’t changed significantly regardless of what era the greatest medium on Earth has been in. In that spirit, we didn’t want to veer too far with Emmy herself.”

The iconic Emmy statuette is getting a rare enhancement.
The TV Academy unveiled on Tuesday a subtle new look for this year’s Emmy statuette: an inscription of “75” at the base of the figurine. The enhancement will be added to the statuette for this year only amid the 75th anniversary of the award ceremony that celebrates and honors the best in television.
According to the Television Academy, it took 47 proposals for the first Emmy design before the 48th was accepted by the Television Academy. “This time it took us seemingly 48 weeks of meetings, illustrations, debates, false starts and ruminating to get to the finish line,” Scott Buford, senior creative director for the Television Academy, said in a statement.
“When I was first asked by the Academy’s leadership to explore altering the statuette, my first reaction was, ‘Are you sure? This is like giving a nip and tuck to the...

A jury has found former internet troll Douglass Mackey guilty of violating people’s constitutional right to vote by disseminating memes encouraging Democrats to vote via text in the 2016 election. The decision comes after more than four days of deliberations.
During the two-week trial, the prosecution presented testimony by MicroChip, a co-conspirator-turned-cooperating witness, who was identified by only his social media handle. On the stand, MicroChip spoke of his mission to sow chaos ahead of the election, driven by his hatred of Clinton, according to reporting by the New York Times.

A Phineas and Ferb revival is in the works as part of creator Dan Povenmire’s newly inked overall deal with Disney Branded Television.
There will be another 40 episodes of the popular animated series produced as part of the deal, which will equate to two seasons. It’s not clear where the episodes will air, since Disney Branded Television currently produces series across Disney Channel, Disney+, Disney Junior and Disney Xd.
Disney Branded Television President Ayo Davis made the announcement in conjunction with Povenmire during Friday’s Television Critics Association panel.
“There’s songs that we wrote in 2005 for this show that are trending on TikTok. That has been one of the best times in my career is the fact that this whole generation of kids and parents really took this show into their hearts, and it still means so much to them,” Povenmire said.

Richard Roundtree’s two-fisted detective tale burst on the scene announcing that a craze called Blaxploitation was on the way. No matter that the movie is somewhat slow and drab — John Shaft was the identification figure denied black audiences for 60 years, a hero who takes no guff from nobody and consistently tells The Man where to head in. Even bigger was the music theme by Isaac Hayes, which transforms Shaft’s casual stroll through Times Square into an iconic image of the 1970s. Criterion’s presentation of Gordon Parks’ smash hit has the original feature in 4K Uhd and in Blu-ray with the first sequel Shaft’s Big Score! in Blu-ray only.
