All the Old Knives (Janus Metz Pedersen)
All the Old Knives wants you to sweat and swoon in equal measure. Playing in the same tried and true sandbox as some of the great espionage thrillers before it, director Janus Metz Pedersen’s adaptation of Olen Steinhaur’s 2015 novel traffics in all necessary trappings of its genre. Between the clandestine correspondence and popped peacoat collars against wet European streets, it’s certainly not shy about cinematic crushes. This infatuation is wholly appropriate, because––chilly demeanor notwithstanding––All the Old Knives is a burning romantic at heart. – Conor O. (full review)

Exclusive: George Robinson, the star of Netflix’s Sex Education, is attached to headline the movie Still Life based on the award-winning Texas Monthly 2009 article of the same name written by Skip Hollandsworth.
Still Life tells the true story of John McClamrock, to be played by Robinson, and his mother Ann. John McClamrock’s story garnered worldwide attention and support.
The film will be produced by Jim Whitaker and Jeff Sussman and directed by Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann. Scott Brown, Texas Monthly president, Megan Creydt of Texas Monthly, and Kevin James are EPs.
The screenplay, originally by Jon Boyer and rewritten by Buck and Schlingmann, is based closely on the article as well as personal accounts from the McClamrock family.

Before premiering her directorial debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the impressive black-and-white drama Passing, Rebecca Hall led a horror feature at last year’s festival that will now finally be arriving this summer. The Night House, directed by David Bruckner (who helmed The Ritual and contributed to V/H/S and Southbound) follows Hall’s character who is reeling from the unexpected death of her husband and retreats to their lakeside home, but all is not as it seems. Ahead of a July release, Searchlight has now released the first trailer and poster.
Matt Cipolla said in his Sundance review, “It’s about 20 minutes into The Night House that it finds its footing. HBO has put in development drama The Big D, from Lily Rabe and her Kill Claudio Productions and married writing/directing duo Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann.
Co-written by Buck and Schlingmann, The Big D is set during a hot and hotly contested summer in Dallas 1980. It follows a triangle of women as their lives collide to unearth a secret past involving the city’s would-be First Lady, Pat Pangburn, and her mysterious bout of amnesia. Unfolding against the backdrop of a vicious election and a city bedazzling its brutal past, The Big D explores political and sexual identity, the ramifications of living in denial, and what happens when you let go of perceived power to dig for the truth.

It’s about 20 minutes into The Night House that it finds its footing. The school year has just ended and Beth (Rebecca Hall), a high school English teacher, goes back to work to input a few more assignments. When a soccer mom type (Samantha Buck) comes in to contest her son’s grades, Beth isn’t having it, to say the least. She stares her down with a trace of empathy that manages to undercut her dead eyes and Hall, ever the solid actor, pinpoints and explores the sarcastic humor latent to the script. When mom continues to press her, Beth flatly explains that her husband, Owen (Evan Jonigkeit), has just shot himself. If this woman wants her son to get a B, he can get a B. It really doesn’t matter.

If You Seek Aimee: Buck & Schlingmann Resurrect a Fallen Angel
Directors Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann succeed with one overarching point in their indie-ensconced portrait of the infamous Sister Aimee Semple McPherson in Sister Aimee, and it’s more to do with the systematic erasure of women’s stories, accomplishments and history than their zeitgeist centerpiece subject.
Christianity has been far from a friend to the ‘second sex,’ and look no further than the maligned narrative of Mary Magdalene or Eve’s original sin to witness the disparagement of women through the annals of oral tradition and the eventual ‘good book,’ continually misinterpreted to serve the needs of the proletariat.…...

Of all the films opening this weekend at the specialty box office, all eyes will be on Judy, the biopic about Hollywood icon Judy Garland. The film made its premiere at Telluride and played the Toronto Film Festival to a great ovation, prompting early awards contender buzz for star Renee Zellweger.
Joining Judy in a trip for the box office rainbow this weekend: A24’s The Death of Dick Long from Daniel Scheinert; Samantha Buck & Marie Schlingmann’s Sister Aimee; the gripping documentary Always In Season; and the satire The Day Shall Come.

Written by Tom Edge and directed by Rupert Goold, Judy showcases Zellweger in the title role in a biopic that’s not cradle-to-grave but rather focuses on a specific, significant piece of Judy Garland’s life.
In 1968 London, Garland is set to perform a five-week sold-out run at the nightclub The Talk of the Town.

No matter the veracity of its basic premise, “Sister Aimee” is upfront about its fictitiousness, claiming that “5½ percent is truth. The rest is imagination.” Unfortunately, the invention on display is of a helter-skelter variety, as Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann’s film so madly lurches about in search of a tone that it feels like the first draft of a gonzo faux-biopic. To be sure, there’s a method to its madcap decision to play fast and loose with the facts. But .
“Sister Aimee” is a made-up tall tale about what happened to the actual Sister Aimee Semple McPherson — a nationally famous 1920s Evangelical preacher who rocketed to stardom thanks to her canny use of radio — when, in 1926, she vanished for five weeks following a swim in Venice Beach, Calif. She’d eventually reappear in Mexico, claiming she’d been kidnapped, and inciting a media firestorm thanks to accusations that...

It’s hard to keep up with a movie that is constantly changing its story. It’s even harder when that story is stranger than fiction and may even be fiction — but about a real person. Such is the case of “Sister Aimee,” writers-directors Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann’s (“Canary”) film that scrambles together a mix of rumors and fantasies about notorious evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson. But the finished product fails to say much about these tales.
It’s worth noting that a woman who is actually able to control her narrative, even filling it with lies, without it being usurped by a man’s perspective in any era is an extraordinary feat. But that’s especially true in 1926, when we first meet Sister Aimee as she’s wrapping up yet another breathless healing service where she miraculously cures her subject while remaining stupendously dissatisfied. She’s craving something...

"I'm just an entertainer, that's all." 1091 has unveiled an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Sister Aimee, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. From directors Samantha Buck & Marie Schlingmann making their feature debut, the film stars newcomer Anna Margaret Hollyman as Sister Aimee. America's most famous evangelist in 1926 is a woman looking for a way out. Fed up with her own success, and swept up in her lover’s daydreams about Mexico, she finds herself on a wild road trip to the border. "Based on true events. Mostly made up." The cast includes Michael Mosley, Andrea Suarez Paz, Julie White, Amy Hargreaves, Macon Blair, Luis Bordonada, Nathan Zellner, Lee Eddy, John Merriman, and Bill Wise. This looks like it gets extra wild by the end, with all sorts of happenings. Here's the first trailer for Samantha Buck & Marie Schlingmann's Sister Aimee, from 1091's YouTube:...

While the story of the 1926 disappearance of evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson may not be known by many, there’s more than enough in the life story of this cult figure to fill many movies. For their narrative feature debut, queer filmmakers Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann zero in on the five weeks that Semple McPherson (at one point the second most popular religious figure in the world behind the Pope) went missing in Mexico. As seen in this exclusive first trailer, the result is an often zany, satirical, and feminist musical comedy led by a radiant Anna Margaret Hollyman.
Here’s the official synopsis: “In 1926 America’s most famous evangelist is a woman. And she’s looking for a way out. Fed up with her own success, she gets swept up in her lover’s daydreams about Mexico and finds herself on a wild road trip towards the border. Based on true events.

Filmmakers Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann aren’t promising the truth in their often wily, occasionally weird “Sister Aimee”: the film opens with a scroll that explains that only “5.5 percent” of what follows is real, the rest is pure imagination. Yet 5.5 percent of the duo’s chosen subject is enough to yield some jaw-dropping revelations, and even the stuff the writers and directors make up about the 1926 disappearance of evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson (the always-stellar Anna Margaret Hollyman) is nutty enough to fit in alongside the mythos of a religious figure who was, at one time, second only to the pope in her popularity. Despite a modern unawareness surrounding Semple McPherson and her wild life — just look at her wholly bonkers Wikipedia page! — much of it is indeed worthy of the big screen treatment, perhaps even a decade-spanning limited series.

IndieWire’s annual Female Filmmakers Dinner at the Sundance Film Festival, presented by Canada Goose, took place on January 27 and celebrated women directors such as Kyra Sedgwick, Jennifer Kent, Lulu Wang, Nisha Ganatra, and Penny Lane. The event took place at the Canada Goose Basecamp on Main Street in the heart of Park City, Utah.
This year’s Sundance lineup was particularly impressive in the way it put women directors in the spotlight, with 53% of the films in the U.S. Dramatic Competition having been helmed by women. Some have even resulted in big-money deals, including A24’s acquisition of Lulu Wang’s delicate family dramedy “The Farewell” for $6 million and Amazon’s extraordinary $13 million payout for Nisha Ganatra’s Mindy Kaling-scripted comedy “Late Night.”

The New Hollywood Podcast landed in Park City to spread inclusivity and representation at the Sundance Film Festival. Adam follows the titular awkward, self-conscious teen (Nicholas Alexander), who spends the summer with his hip and queer older sister Casey (Margaret Qualley) in New York City. While he is there he falls for Gillian (Menuez) — but she mistakes him for a trans man and he can’t quite bring himself to correct her error as the two grow closer. Sundance has always been pretty gay. Whether the festival was supporting queer filmmakers to lead the indie film boom of the ’90s, ushering in the dawn of the New Queer Cinema, or unofficially partnering with OutFest to share programmers and titles, Park City has always been fertile ground in which Lgbtq cinema can thrive. This year brings fewer solely queer offerings than previous years, but the program still has plenty to look forward to.
This year’s program marks the first in Kim Yutani’s new role as director of programming. Formerly a senior programmer for the festival, Yutani began her career at OutFest, where she lived and breathed queer films in her roles as artistic director and director of programming. Samantha Buck’s documentary “Best Kept Secret” may be the best kept secret of the year. Not only is it currently the only 2013 release with a perfect 100 rating on Metacritic — a more discerning review aggregator than Rotten Tomatoes — but it’s one of five movies recently nominated for the 2013 Gotham Independent Film Audience Award along with major awards contenders “12 Years a Slave” and “Fruitvale Station.” (Fans can vote on the award until Nov. 24.) Made for less than $400,000, “Best Kept Secret” chronicles 18 months in the lives of Janet Mino, a New Jersey teacher whose students...

Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" and Ryan Coogler's "Fruitvale Station" were rather expected inclusions among the 5 finalists for the 4th annual Gotham Independent Film Audience Award. They'll compete against much less publicized documentaries: Samantha Buck's “Best Kept Secrets,” which takes on Newark public school for students with special needs; Tadashi Nakamura's “Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings,” which profiles a ukelele legend; and Ramona S. Diaz's “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey,” which follows the replacement frontman for the band Journey. Notably, none of the films are directed by white men, which is more or less unheard of at film awards shows. The Independent Filmmaker Project set its top five nominees for the 4th annual Gotham Independent Film Audience Award. As befits its title, "Best Kept Secret," Samantha Buck's intimate look at a New Jersey High School for special needs children, is one of the best kept secrets of the past year. At the movie review aggregation site Metacritic.com, it is the only film with a perfect 100 "Metascore." It was the Audience Award winner at Iff Boston and named one of the Best of the Fest at AFI Docs. It played well on PBS' P.O.V. strand in September. And yet 15 film festivals rejected "Best Kept Secret" before it found acclaim. What did critics and audiences eventually see in "Best Kept Secret" that 15 film festival programmers did not? Film festivals reject movies for a variety of reasons -- quality, or the lack of it, of course -- but there are other factors, as well: achieving a "balanced program"; picking films appropriate to specific local audiences. But do some films...

J.T. Petty is back and he's bringing his Hellbenders with him! His latest film is arriving in theaters and On Demand on October 18th and we've got an exclusive first look at the poster. Clancy Brown, Dan Fogler, Clifton Collins Jr., Andre Royo and Samantha Buck star. Head inside for a look!
The story goes like this: There are demons so terrible that no mortal man of God could successfully drive them back to Hell. The only option is for the exorcist himself to invite possession and then commit suicide, dragging along the demon to damnation - so the Augustine Interfaith Order of Hellbound Saints - or Hellbenders - was formed. A group of elite, highly-trained exorcists, they live in a constant state of debauchery so they will be ready to go to Hell at any moment. When an infernal Norse demon called Black Surtr escapes into New York City...

When it comes to horror, it feels like no subgenre is replicated most than the exorcism. And why shouldn’t it? Watching possession play out on film is a great and gruesome way to make make your audience cringe. After the fiftieth or so time you sit down to watch a nice normal girl’s life get ruined by Satan, though, it starts to get a little stale. But the sinning and swearing members of the Order of the Hellbound Saints from J.T. Petty‘s Hellbenders have arrived to spin that premise on its head (sorry). The blasphemous men (and woman) of God are a special force that, rather than waiting for exorcism cases to appear, live as sinfully as possible to bring the demons to them first so that they can battle it out and send them back to hell. It’s dealing with the problem directly at its source. True...

I find Newark, New Jersey to be one of the scariest and ugliest cities in the United States, but Samantha Buck's documentary Best Kept Secret reveals a side of the economically ravaged city that very few people even know about. John F. Kennedy High School is Newark’s best kept secret. A public school located in the 10th poorest city in the U.S., JFK High School provides a loving and attentive educational environment for students with special needs, specifically those spanning the spectrum of autism. Best Kept Secret focuses specifically on Janet Mino, a teacher at JFK High School who is about to see her class of autistic men graduate in the spring of 2012. Mino knows that once the students leave JFK High School, they will no longer receive the same kind of care that she is able to provide for them. As the students creep closer to...

Title: Best Kept Secret Director: Samantha Buck An open-hearted, engaging documentary that follows the lives of a group of young autistic kids for the 18 months leading up to them placing out of a special needs school at age 21, “Best Kept Secret” is a movie that flirts with heartbreak and despair while also showcasing — in the form of both struggling yet involved parents as well as its strong, crusading teacher protagonist — the better angels of human nature. In telling a more compact, focused story than recent, similarly themed nonfiction feature “The United States of Autism,” the film packs an undeniable emotional punch, throwing a spotlight on characters [ Read More ]

SXSW announced its film lineup today, which is full of all kinds of features and documentaries. The big splashy Hollywood news is that the movie 21 Jump Street, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, will premiere at the fest as its Centerpiece Film. In addition, the closing-night film will be the music documentary Big Easy Express from Emmett Malloy.
One marquee movie with a Texas connection is the Dallas-set Killer Joe, reuniting Bug filmmaker William Friedkin and playwright Tracy Letts, and starring Matthew McConaughey (and that's not the only film he's in that will play SXSW). Other notable movies playing the fest include Bobcat Goldthwait's God Bless America, the Will Ferrell-starring Casa de mi Padre and Guy Maddin's Keyhole ... among many many others announced.
SXSW Film has no Lone Star States category this year, but the overall lineup of narrative and documentary features includes many local and state connections.
