In honor of those hard-working (real-life) acting teachers who inspired, challenged, and motivated us all, here are 11 fictional acting teachers we cannot forget! Claude Dumet from “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp”While not a teacher per se, John Slattery’s hilarious theatrical director spices up Netflix’s “Wet Hot American Summer” prequel series with his un-camp-like approach to the theater. While holding auditions to replace the (inexplicably expelled) leads in the camp production, Claude declares to a 16-year-old wannabe “The truth stings...like salt in an open wound. You’re an abomination!” Um. Maybe we’ll seek our theatrical educations outside of Camp Firewood. Alex Welles from “Welcome Back, Kotter”It might not be his best-known role, but two-time Oscar nominee (“Ghosts of Mississippi,” “Salvador”) James Woods was comically memorable as Alex Welles in the pilot episode of this 1970s sitcom. Mr. Welles was the (you guessed...

Here's the latest lady whom the ever-gentlemanly Steve Rogers will call "Ma'am" more than once.
Emily VanCamp will be making the jump to the big leagues big time as she's close to officially joining the cast of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," according to Deadline.
VanCamp is probably best known for her role as Emily Thorne, the main protagonist on ABC's hit drama series, "Revenge." She beat out the likes of Alison Brie, Felicity Jones and Anna Kendrick for the role of Sharon Carter, a descendant of Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell in "Captain America: The First Avenger) and, as fate would have it, the new love interest of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).
Plot details on the "Captain America" sequel are being kept under wraps, though it's said to pick up shortly after the events of "The Avengers" (which could be said for all of Marvel's Phase Two films,...

Winter Soldier: Issues 1-14
Written by Ed Brubaker

Eight years ago the world was a vastly different place. George W. Bush was just starting his second term, Pope John Paul II had passed away, and Ed Brubaker introduced a new villain in the pages of Captain America ominously known as The Winter Soldier. As time passed, the mystery behind this new threat unraveled and the Winter Soldier turned out to be James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes, Captain America’s long deceased partner. While comic character’s rise and fall so often, the impact of their supposed deaths have drastically lessened, yet Bucky’s resurrection not only sent shock waves through the Marvel Universe, it cemented Brubaker’s place in the comic writer’s hall of fame.
It seems fitting then, that Brubaker’s time with Marvel comes to an end...

Daniel Day-Lewis is currently earning raves for his performance as a conflicted Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg.s Lincoln, an Oscar contender that opens in limited release today (November 9th) before expanding nationwide on November 16th. But while Ddl.s performance is noteworthy, the fact that he.s playing our nation.s 16th president on screen isn.t as unique as one might have thought. A comprehensive infographic posted over on Slate tracks the number of times the U.S. presidents have been portrayed in movies (including direct-to-video releases, animated films and shorts). Wow. And according to their research, Ddl.s Lincoln portrayal is one of 130 total turns, making him the most-portrayed president in Hollywood history. Here.s the data. We.ll analyze it below: Time to star penning my big-screen biopics on John Tyler, James Buchanan and Warren G. Harding, as those poor leaders of our great nation never...

The Grey and Warrior star Frank Grillo has revealed that he’s in the midst of testing for the ‘badass’ character, while previous speculation said that he was actually testing to play Crossbones, a ruthless mercenary who has operated as the right-hand man of the Red Skull.
He tweeted on Monday,
See Ya La. It was a good trip. Marvel was a lot of fun. Be cool if it works out. #CaptainAmerica.
Grillo also added in a following tweet, which has since been deleted,
Wow. Badass fans that Marvel has. Fierce muthas. #bones.
With production scheduled to start next spring, Chris Evans is back as Cap, Sebastian Stan as the titular James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes turned The Winter Soldier, Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent the Black Widow, Anthony Mackie will appear as The Falcon and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is rumored for the female lead.

In movie years 2014's “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is not that far away. Production is scheduled to start next spring and so casting is still in full swing. Obviously Chris Evans is back as Cap, Sebastian Stan must be back as the titular James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes turned The Winter Soldier, Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent the Black Widow (who met Captain America in “The Avengers”) and Anthony Mackie will appear as The Falcon (Mary Elizabeth Winstead is also rumored to have won the role of the female lead, but that's unconfirmed as of right now) So who else is joining the cast? Well apart from say, usual suspects like Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, it appears that actor Frank Grillo is testing for a villain role in the film according to various Tweets, and one confirming it all from the actor himself. What role?...

Ron Palillo—best known for playing the snickering, attention-starved Sweathog Arnold Horshack on Welcome Back, Kotter—has died following a heart attack. He was 63. As Horshack, Palillo turned being irritating into a comic artform, constantly petitioning Gabe Kaplan's teacher character with his signature "Ooooh! Ooooh!" (a parody of Joe E. Ross's exclamations from Car 54, Where Are You?, though arguably made more famous by Palillo). While Epstein—played by Robert Hegyes, who died in January—provided a touch of Marx Bros.-inspired zaniness to the goings-on at James Buchanan High, it was Horshack who was more explicitly ...

Arnold Horshack, you will be missed. Ron Palillo, who was best known for playing the loveable class clown opposite a young John Travolta's Vinny Barbarino in the classic '70s ABC sitcom, Welcome Back, Kotter, has died. He was 63. Palillo's agent, Jacqueline Stander, told NBC News that the actor had a heart attack and passed away in his sleep at his home in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Palillo's goofy Arnold Dingfelder Horshack was a central member of the Sweathogs, a group of high school cutups taught by wisecracking teacher Gabe Kotter (Gabe Kaplan) at the fictional James Buchanan High in Brooklyn, N.Y. With his high-pitched squeal for a laugh, thick Brooklyn accent and child-like demeanor, the...

Plenty of gay actors have convinced the world otherwise, so why not let one play Fifty Shades of Grey's Christian Grey?
I have two words for Bret Easton Ellis, who yesterday claimed that a gay actor shouldn't play the part of lady-spanker Christian Grey in the adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey: Rock Hudson.
Hudson was a man so gay he had a mini, monogrammed man-bag to house his amyl nitrate (I know this because his former lover Armistead Maupin told me). And yet, on-screen, Hudson glistened with heterosexuality. He defined the mid-20th-century romantic lead. In pictures such as Giant and Magnificent Obsession, he made a generation of postwar women swoon and fantasise; they were convinced of his rock solid straightness. When he died of Aids in 1985, many were more shocked that he was gay than he was dead.
But Ellis described the casting of gay TV...

For most holidays, you can find music that's generally of the celebratory sort. When it comes to Presidents' Day, however, the selection is more of a mixed bag. From the obscure references ("Whip It") to the general ("Presidents and Magistrates") to the more obvious ("James K. Polk"), the American president has been alternately lauded and pummeled in song. In putting together this playlist, more often we've found it's been the latter. Take a spin through our list of 13 presidential songs, one-by-one with selected lyrics/explanations, or in full below, and let us know what we missed in the comments.

James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby as a sidekick character in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941). After being thought to be dead Bucky made his presence known again in Marvel Universe as the Winter Soldier. For some time he took the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers was presumed to be dead. First Appearance Bucky is an orphan, the son of a soldier killed in training at a U.S. Army Camp before the United States' entry into World War II. As a result, he is unofficially adopted by the camp as a mascot. Nicknamed "Bucky," he takes to wearing a uniform and becoming savvy with the ins and outs of military life, even though he...

Joe Johnston knows how to direct adventure films but watching his growth as a director has been a pleasure. His first offering, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a visual effects feast, thanks to his training at Industrial Light & Magic. He followed up in 1991 with his first comic book adaptation, Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer and while the movie is far better than the critical reaction or box office would indicate, it still lacked that certain spark of delight for a summer blockbuster. Over the intervening years, Joe has continued to direct films that has shown steady growth as he has more subtly integrated effects with characterization with the family friendly Jumanji and the heart-warming October Sky. It was all good training as he took on what has become his highest profile project yet, Captain America: The First Avenger.
Clearly, he has learned his lessons as the critics – both mainstream and geek...

Captain America: The First Avenger
Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell
Directed by Joe Johnston
Rated PG-13
Captain America: The First Avenger seems to be a film torn between it's comic book origins and what we've come to expect from a war movie. Don't be fooled; it sure as hell feels like we're in a war film at times, with the dark scenery, tone, and ample amounts of dirt, but rest assured, as soon as the action starts, we're reminded this is, indeed, a film based on a comic.
And there's really nothing wrong with that. Given it's shortcomings (which I'll get into here soon), it turns out quite a bit better than I had expected.
We find ourselves in 1942 Europe, where Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving), Aka Red Skull, has found an artifact lost from the treasures of Odin himself. He harnesses this item into creating several powerful weapons,...

Below are a few posters from various artists -- Olly Moss, Tyler Stout, and Eric Tan -- from Alamo Drafthouse and Mondo. From director, Joe Johnston, the film is just four days away from its theatrical release. It stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, along with Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt/Red Skull, Sebastian Stan as James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, and Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Chester Phillips. It has come out that attached to 'The First Avenger' will be an after-the-credits teaser for director, Joss Whedon's 'The Avengers.' Captain America: The First Avenger, is hitting U.S. cinemas July, 22nd, and the star-spangled superhero promises us plenty of summer blockbusting action. Here’s a few facts, to whet your appetite for July, 22nd (July 29th in the U.K.) and of course to celebrate Independence Day for our Stateside readers.
1. Captain America’s first appearance came in Captain America Comics #1 back in March, 1941. The secret to his success? Stick your hero giving Hitler a hiding on the front cover!
Geared by wartime patriotism, his comics sold nearly 1 million copies a month. To put this in perspective, Cap was quite comfortably out-selling Time Magazine!
2. Captain America has a back story as tragic as any super-hero. Growing up Steve Rogers, a weak and sickly boy in a poor family, he suffered the loss of his father when he was a youngster, and then his mother when he was a teen.

As John Travolta's character Vinnie Barbarino always used to say, "What?" "Where?" "Why?" Well, the answers to those questions are (a) a reunion of the Welcome Back, Kotter cast (b) at the upcoming TV Land Awards (c) to receive the 35th Anniversary Award. That's right. The Sweathogs will be coming together to reminisce about their days at Brooklyn's James Buchanan High when the hit '70s sitcom is honored at the annual event next month. However, while Travolta has agreed to attend, so far not everyone has sent in their RSVPs, namely… Mr. Kotter himself! That's right, according to a press release sent out about the event, Gabe Kaplan is not...

John Travolta is finally ready to reunite with his fellow Sweathogs.
The 'Welcome Back, Kotter' star has RSVP'd yes to the show's 35th reunion, which is scheduled to be held at the TV Land Awards in April, TV Guide reports. Although Travolta's the most famous James Buchanan High alum to say he'll attend, there's still a major piece of the cast who still hasn't signed on: Kotter himself.
Gabe Kaplan has not yet sent his response, according to TV Guide. However, TV Land assured the publication that more cast members will be announced soon.

In advance of the airing of the first trailer for director Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger during this weekend's Super Bowl, Marvel Studios has released, via the L.A. Times, the first still image from the movie to feature Sebastian Stan as James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes. Bucky appeared in the very first issue of Captain America Comics way back in 1941 and was very much a "sidekick" to Cap during his wartime adventures.
But Johnston told the Times that "Bucky isn't a sidekick" in First Avenger and that he has a "darker edge" than in the comics. Johnston also revealed some minor plot details that explain the "interesting relationship" between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Bucky.

Giving lie to the notion that all straight, old, white men are homophobic whackjobs (see: Republican Senator John McCain), former president Jimmy Carter told a reporter that he thought America might be ready to put a gay or lesbian in the White House.
That prompted New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd to write about the topic, including asking Democratic Congressman Barney Frank and Bill Maher, the latter telling Dowd, he didn't think we were:
Can you imagine how much a gay president would have to overcompensate to please the macho ninnies who control our national debate? Women like Hillary have to do it, Obama had to do it because he’s black and liberal, but a gay president? He’d have to nuke something the first week.
Frank (gay himself, in case that news somehow had missed you) was no more optimistic, if more serious about the issues around a...

Former President Jimmy Carter tells Big Think that even as the fight over Don't Ask, Don't Tell continues, he believes Americans are ready for their first gay president (that we know of--i think we've all heard the rumors about "life-long bachelor" James Buchanan). Carter says the campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have done a lot to melt the resistance to non-straight-white-guys in the White House:...

The relationships between rappers and presidents have always been tenuous at best. Or at least so we thought. This week, there have been two incidents that have united the worlds of hip-hop and presidential politics in ways that nobody really saw coming. Earlier this week, George W. Bush declared that the moment that Kanye West announced "George Bush doesn't care about black people" during a telethon was the lowest point of his presidency. West responded in typical fashion, saying that he related to Bush because they both have been under the same kind scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Bill Clinton tipped his hat to Lil Wayne earlier this week in anticipation of the Mc's release from Rikers Island. "This guy's smart. And he's got abilities," Clinton said. "And he's got a new chance now. And what I hope is that this is not just something to brand him as a cool guy, but...

When "Captain America: The First Avenger" hits the big screen in 2011, Chris Evans won't be carrying the entire weight of the World War II hero's origin story on his shoulders — he'll have Cap's sidekick Bucky to share the burden.
Evans spoke with MTV News at Comic-Con last week and praised the work of Sebastian Stan, the young actor chosen to join the battlefield alongside Rogers as James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes in "Captain America."
"Sebastian Stan is fantastic. He just started his first day at work. They make for a great relationship," Evans told MTV. "So far, I think the plot line between Steve and Bucky has been fantastic."
As Steve's best friend and closest ally, Bucky is one of the most important characters in Captain America's inner circle. But he's hardly the only important character, what with an impressive cast list including Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and Stanley Tucci as Doctor Erskine.

Deadline & Heat Vision are both reporting that, once in the running for Captain America, Sebastian Stan, has instead landed the role of Bucky Barnes, the side-kick to Cap. Stan is best known for his role on Gossip Girl, but most recently appeared as the villainous ski patrol douche in Hot Tub Time Machine and has just recently finished shooting a role in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.
People may be quick to call Bucky Barnes Captain America’s Robin but that is not particularly accurate. He is a sidekick which both characters would have in common but Barnes is a little more extreme doing dirty work such as assassinations, killings, stealth missions, etc. while Captain America’s public persona is protected. He does a lot of the things that Captain America won’t do.

Actor Sebastian Stan ("Hot Tub Time Machine") has now been cast to play the 'sidekick' of 'Captain America', in director Joe Johnston's upcoming feature "The First Avenger: Captain America", based on the Marvel Comics superhero, created in the 1940's by Joe Simon and Jack "King" Kirby. The new film starts shooting June 2010, set for a summer 2011 release.
The original 'James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes' debuted in "Captain America Comics" #1 (March 1941), published by Marvel's 1940's predecessor Timely Comics.
In 2005, the original Bucky was brought back from supposed death as the 'Winter Soldier', becoming 'Captain America' in 2008, after the death of 'Steve Rogers'.
Following his debut, Bucky Barnes appeared alongside Captain America in virtually every story in Captain America Comics and other Timely Comics series, also appearing in Timely/Marvel's first superhero group, the "All-Winners Squad". After Bucky was shot and seriously wounded in a 1948 Captain America story,...

Sebastian Stan isn't Steve Rogers, but that's not to say that he won't be Captain America eventually now that the "Gossip Girl" actor has landed the role of James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes in "The First Avenger: Captain America."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stan will play Bucky in the forthcoming "Captain America" film from director Joe Johnston and Marvel Studios. Marvel has reportedly confirmed the news. Stan joins the previously cast Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull.
In addition to "Captain America," Stan has signed on to reprise the role of Bucky in "five or six" additional Marvel films.
In the comic books, Bucky is a teenage orphan that was too young to join the army before he becomes Captain America's sidekick. In Ed Brubaker's recent revival of the character, Bucky was revealed as a covert operative that spent several decades as the brainwashed Winter Soldier.

Now that we finally have our Captain America in Chris Evans, you can expect all sorts of casting news surrounding the film’s secondary characters to come out of the woodwork. Take for instance this latest news. Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl, Hot Tub Time Machine) has been cast as Cap’s sidekick, James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, signing a 5-6 picture deal. Interestingly enough, Stan initially auditioned for the role of Captain America. But I guess the fact that the guy hails from Romania could have detracted from the fact that the character is called Captain America.

Even though he hasn't been contacted by Marvel Studios, Sam Worthington would kill to play Captain America. Still, the actor — who stars in tomorrow's massively hyped "Avatar" from director James Cameron — understands that some fans would have a problem with an Australian assuming the most iconic American superhero's mantle.
That's not to say that Worthington should be ruled out from playing Steve Rogers — I personally would have no trouble with that casting, even if that's not the majority opinion — but in the spirit of finding an amicable resolution, I think we should explore some other comic book options for the up-and-coming actor, who is already signed on for "The Last Days of American Crime."
If the role of Cap goes to another actor, here are five other comic book heroes that Worthington could play fantastically.
