Over its four-season run, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend gave us more than 150 original songs paying homage to every musical genre out there, courtesy of writers Adam Schlesinger, Jack Dolgen and the show’s two co-creators, lead actor Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna.
The series used its musical conceit to take audiences along for the ride as Rebecca Bunch (played by Bloom) abruptly leaves her high-powered New York life and moves to small-town California to be near her childhood crush. And while the songs all expanded the lives of Rebecca and her friends in hilarious, introspective and occasionally self-aware ways, the best of them can be listened to again and again, even outside the context of the episodes they appear in.
Suffice to say, the bar for creating this list of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend songs was high — but the result is...

Florals for spring? How original. A legendary trio reuniting onstage to present a 2024 Screen Actors Guild Award? Instantly iconic.
“The Devil Wears Prada” co-stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt, who is SAG Award and Oscar nominated for her supporting role in “Oppenheimer,” joined together 18 years after the 2006 film to present the award for Male Actor in a Comedy at the 2024 SAG Awards. The awards ceremony streamed live on Netflix Saturday, February 24.
Streep took the stage in a Prada dress to present the first award of the night, but comically stumbled when she reached the microphone.
“Two things,” Streep said. “I forgot my glasses, clearly. And the envelope.”
Those problems were quickly rectified when her former onscreen assistants Blunt and Hathaway joined her on stage. Blunt brought the envelope containing the winner (Jeremy Allen White for “The Bear”), while Hathaway brought Streep’s glasses. Fans of the movie might...

The past 24 hours have been awash in headlines about Netflix’s What We Watched report: an information dump that many analysts considered the most transparent accounting of user data that the streamer has ever released.
The report tracked user engagement using an “hours watched” metric – meaning how many hours a piece of content was viewed, as opposed to how many individual users watched it. The report is heavy with TV series because, as the company noted, the amount of hours in a TV program are much greater than that of a standalone feature. But some movies clawed to the top of the ranking, which helps indicate how films travel on the platform.
Here are the top ten films – eight of which Netflix developed or financed — that appear in the report, which tracked hours watched from January to June of 2023:

Exclusive: The Writers Guild of America’s silence on the October 7 terrorist attacks on Israel looks to be the only statement they’ll be making, at least according to West Coast president Meredith Stiehm.
“In the past week, some members have requested that the Guild take a public stand on events in the Middle East,” WGA West boss and former Homeland EP today told showrunners and others who have sought a statement of support and condolence from their Guild similar to what the DGA and SAG-AFTRA, plus Disney, Comcast, and many others have already said for the over 1400 killed by Hamas and the hundreds taken hostage. “Equally, many members have asked us to refrain from making any statement” Stiehm continued in the email sent out at around noon today.

Exclusive: The Writers Guild of America hasn’t said anything publicly about the savage attack on Israel by terrorists on October 7, and a number of irate showrunners and others will be discussing that silence Friday.
Almost a week after dozens of high-profile WGA members put out an open letter reprimanding guild leadership for “when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent,” guild members are getting together to say something more.
“The guild wants this to go away, but we aren’t going away — it is outrageous they’ve said nothing, absolutely outrageous,” one individual who plans on joining today’s virtual meeting told Deadline.
Chaired by American Soul creator Jonathan Prince, a Zoom meeting is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Pt today to discuss why the WGA has been silent about Hamas’ onslaught against the Jewish state, which has left more than 1,400 dead and thousands injured.

A showrunners picket at Fox that started as a way to show solidarity during the strike ended up raising close to $45,000 for crew members who have been adversely affected by the work stoppage.
Strike Captain Amy Berg encouraged showrunners who attended the Sept. 12 picket to bring along gift cards so she could distribute them to support staff in need. More than 300 high-powered scribes, including Steve Levitan, Shawn Ryan, Aline Brosh-McKenna, Carlton Cuse, Rene Balcer, Jack Burditt, Mike Scully, Matt Selman, Andy Gordon, Tucker Cawley and David Shore, walked the line that day.
At today’s IATSE appreciation day at Fox, Berg distributed the gift cards to 115 people. She plans to mail more out this week to crew members.
“I was looking at all these amazing funds we have out there, but noticed that most require a long application process which can delay people getting the help they need,” Berg told Deadline. “I just thought, what could we do that offered immediate assistance?”
Those who participated in today’s IATSE appreciation picket received at least $150 word of cards to grocery stores and retail outlets like Target.
“Things everyone can use,” said Berg. “I basically started a nonprofit in one week, thanks to the generosity of my fellow showrunners.”
Showrunners have already contributed more than $500,000 recently to the Entertainment Community Fund. (Click for the showrunner donation link). Most of the donors have been anonymous.
There’s renewed optimism that the WGA and AMPTP can reach a deal now that both parties have agreed to meet tomorrow.
The WGA sent out a note to members confirming the talks: “The WGA and AMPTP now have a confirmed schedule to bargain this week, starting on Wednesday. You might not hear from us in the coming days while we are negotiating, but know that our focus is getting a fair deal for writers as soon as possible. We’ll reach out again when there is something of significance to report. In the meantime, please continue to demonstrate your commitment and unity by coming out to the picket lines – for yourselves and fellow writers, SAG-AFTRA, other unions’ members, and all those in our community who are impacted by the strikes.”...

A group of top-tier showrunners including Kenya Barris and Noah Hawley has set a meeting with the WGA leadership as they try to aid the negotiating process.
The move is not a sign of discontent among the guild, as rumored by some, but rather a chance to bring more high-profile folks into the process as the writers strike has moved into its fourth month.
We hear that Black-ish creator Barris, Hawley, the man behind FX’s Fargo and its upcoming Alien series, and others are set to sit down with leadership on Friday at the WGA West’s L.A. headquarters.
“This was meant to be an information session and not meant to offer anything more than help,” a source close to events told Deadline. “That is still the intention so we can all get a fair deal to get back to work.”

Two years ago, during the lockdown, I wrote that I had become addicted to those little bird-box libraries that make walking here something of a literary pilgrimage.
I’m still addicted. And almost two months ago, just before the writers strike began, I made a charming discovery–that one of my neighbors is a Very Famous Writer– all thanks to his sidewalk library.
The writer will remain unnamed, because privacy is something to be respected, even by reporters. But here’s the short form:
About four o’clock one afternoon, before the dog-crowd comes out, I felt a need for one of those short, head-clearing walks. A good target, I figured, would be a spot some blocks away, where somebody or other was maintaining what I’d long thought was the best little library in town. I won’t give titles, because some of those might tip the owner’s identity.

Ashton Kutcher wears a lot of hats these days. He’s a producer, entrepreneur, husband, and father. But most know him for his acting in comedies like That 70s Show and Two and a Half Men. His latest film Your Place or Mine is currently streaming on Netflix. But recently, the popular actor took a trip down memory lane with Vanity Fair to talk about his cult classic film, Dude, Where’s My Car? Kutcher talked about one interesting scene from the film.

In 2000, Kutcher starred in Dude, Where’s My Car? with Seann William Scott. They played two stoner friends who wake up after a night of partying to realize they don’t remember where they left the car owned by Kutcher’s character, Jesse. “Your Place or Mine” is the story of two best friends named Peter and Debbie who slowly come to realize that they are a perfect match. The film, which debuted on Feb. 10, is a bit of a throwback to the glory days of rom-coms, a period in the 1990s and early aughts when Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey and other spunky stars met cute to the delight of moviegoers. And that’s not just in the casting of Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, veterans of the genre, in the two central roles, or that “Your Place or Mine” was written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna, who previously penned “27 Dresses” and “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Netflix Top 10 (Week of February 13): ‘You’ and ‘Your Place or Mine’ remain atop charts for 2nd week
Netflix has released the Top 10 viewing numbers for the week of February 13, and without any new high-profile releases last week, the charts mostly remained the same as last time. Penn Badgley’s series “You” and the Reese Withspoon-Ashton Kutcher rom-com “Your Place or Mine” did well again, the latter presumably helped by Valentine’s Day last Tuesday.
The fourth season of “You” ended up in the Top 10 in 88 countries with 64.1 million hours viewed, down from 92 million views its launch week with the first five episodes having 38 million views. The first and third seasons also continue to be watched with 22.4 million and 15.6 million hours, respectively.
By comparison, “Your Place or Mine” increased its views to 52.8 million hours vs. the previous week’s 51.2 million views. Again, the romantic comedy from “The Devil Wears Prada” scribe Aline Brosh McKenna probably got a nice bump from V-Day. Other movies returning to the...

Netflix’s February rotation has much more to offer than just romance movies, though if you’re looking to extend the Valentine’s Day mood, several options like the Reese Witherspoon rom-com “Your Place Or Mine” from “The Devil Wears Prada” scribe Aline Brosh McKenna will warm your heart. “La La Land” could also satisfy the longing for a love story, but self-love is the most important, and “Eat, Pray, Love” can help you with that.
For those not feeling the love, “Lyle Lyle, Crocodile” promises fun for the whole family with the help of music from “La La Land” composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Shawn Mendes, who voices a CGI crocodile who only expresses himself through song, also contributed an original song to the film.

Written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna (“The Devil Wears Prada”), the cross-country love story was released on the streamer in time for the weekend before Valentine’s Day. It was not only the #1 movie in the United States but also in every European region, Australia, New Zealand, as well as a number of South and Latin American countries.

Joe Goldberg aka Professor Jonathan Moore is back. Following its Feb. 9 release date, “You” Season 4 managed to crack the Netflix Top 10 English TV List during the Feb. 6-12 viewing window at No. 1 with 92.07 million hours viewed, making it the most viewed title this week.
Part 1 of the murder-mystery series starring Penn Badgley, which introduces a new group of “friends” or suspects, landed in the Top 10 in 90 countries. Season 1 (19.24 million hours viewed) and Season 3 (11.44 million hours viewed) also joined the chart in fourth and ninth place as fans watched or revisited the series.
For context, it’s not the greatest opening weekend for a Netflix series premiere. Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” recorded 196.2 million hours in its first week of viewing and Season 2 of “Bridgerton” had 193.02 million. “Ginny & Georgia” Season 2, which debuted on Jan. 5, opened to 180.47 million hours viewed, meaning it performed better than Season 3 of “Emily in Paris,” “The Watcher,...

The rom-com as we know (and love) it is dead. Stop trying to resurrect it with half-brained zombie mash-ups, and let’s usher in the next post (post-post?) modern era.
In the decade-plus since “(500) Days of Summer” seemed to revolutionize the rom-com by subverting trope after trope, the glimmer of hope for the genre in postmodern Hollywood has only dwindled in the years since. And what years they’ve been! Now, the nostalgic hallmarks of romantic comedies didn’t feel so quaint. Instead, rom-com lovers looked for new entries, re-watched old ones, and even teased possible sequels — 20 years later.
But as the modern rom-com greats of recent days past have reminded us, the glory days of Nancy Meyers, Nora Ephron, and perfectly balanced rom-coms are far behind us. It’s a whole other generation now, one that may or may not recognize the former classics.
So, why do contemporary films keep blatantly referencing them?...

The Devil may wear Prada, but Andy Sachs is still riding solo.
“The Devil Wears Prada” screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna revealed that if the film were to have a follow-up, Anne Hathaway’s iconic character Andy Sachs would “definitely not” still be dating Adrian Grenier’s unsupportive chef Nate.
“Andy and Nate are definitely not together,” Brosh McKenna told Variety. “That much I can tell you.”
Grenier’s Nate has been deemed the true “villain” of the beloved 2006 rom-com following aspiring serious journalist Andy (Hathaway) while she rises in the ranks at Runway, a Vogue knockoff fashion magazine. Meryl Streep starred as Andy’s boss Miranda Priestly, infamously modeled after Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
Hathaway recently addressed the new Nate hate, saying during “Watch What Happens Live!” that Nate is not the villain. “No, I’m sorry, I don’t [think so],” the Oscar winner said. “I think that they were both...

At the heart of Aline Brosh McKenna’s directorial debut “Your Place Or Mine” lies a personal story.
The Netflix rom-com stars Reese Witherspoon as single mom Debbie, who lives in Los Angeles with her son Jack (Weslely Kimmel) and Ashton Kutcher as New York-based bachelor Peter, who have been good friends for 20 years. Debbie originally plans to stay at Peter’s apartment with him in order to finish a masters accounting program so that she can get a new job, but when her babysitter cancels at the last minute, Peter offers to fly to Los Angeles to watch Jack so that Debbie can complete her degree.
“On the most surface level, it’s personal, because I stayed in my friend Ted’s apartment when he was a bachelor. So that was the inspiration,” she said. “My husband (Will McKenna) and I were friends long distance for a while, and...

The 95th Academy Awards are about a month away, which means you’re running out of time to watch every nominated film before the ceremony. Fortunately, streaming is making it easy to do it. Two Oscar nominees just got added to HBO Max, so you can cross them off your watchlist this weekend.
The contender to watch this weekend: “Empire of Light”
Sam Mendes’ ode to the movies was designed to be a major awards contender. Mendes is a past Best Picture and Best Director winner, stars Olivia Colman and Colin Firth have Oscars of their own, and composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are two-time winners. But the film received mixed reviews and no nominations in the Big Five categories. Its sole nomination belongs to cinematographer Roger Deakins, a two-time winner, most recently for “1917, his prior collaboration with Mendes. It’s his 15th nomination overall. The film tells...

“The Devil Wears Prada” and “27 Dresses” writer Aline Brosh McKenna’s directorial debut “Your Place Or Mine” stars Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. A strong ensemble cast includes Steve Zahn, Jesse Williams, Tig Notaro and Zoe Chao along with Wesley Kimmel. The film heads to Netflix Friday, Feb. 10.
Peter (Kutcher) lives in New York where he looks forward to change in his consulting job and love life. Debbi (Witherspoon) lives in Los Angeles with her son Jack (Kimmel), and she clings to structure and routine. The two are exact opposites, but they have been best friends for 20 years ever since they had a one-night stand that didn’t go anywhere. Peter loves “The Cars,” and the film contains quite a few of their hits.
For Debbie, McKenna wrote the film’s original song “Embers” with the film’s composer Siddhartha and Alan DeMoss, who produced and mixed the score.

Soon after wrapping four seasons of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, the cult CW musical that saw her segue from screenwriter to showrunner, Aline Brosh McKenna decided to revisit her past before turning her attention to the future. She rented the garden apartment in the same Larchmont-adjacent duplex she and her now-husband shared during the mid-’90s, not too far from the home where they now live. “We’d always look down at this unit and say, ‘Ugh, we wish we had that,’ ” she says of her shingle’s headquarters. “Now this is my office, which feels wonderfully full circle.”

Somewhat surprisingly, Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher had never worked together before Netflix’s new rom-com “Your Place or Mine.”
“I had always wanted to make a romantic comedy with Reese,” Kutcher tells Variety over Zoom. “Like, always.”
Though both are icons of the genre who rose to fame in the early 2000s — Witherspoon captured hearts in “Legally Blonde” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” while Kutcher made audiences swoon in “Just Married” and “No Strings Attached” — the stars just didn’t align for them, until now.
In fact, Witherspoon and Kutcher had only really met one time before, at a party decades ago — in a meet cute that could’ve been scripted for one of their movies — though they have different stories of how it went down.
“He was carrying a little cooler,” Witherspoon recalls. “I was like, ‘Hey, what’s in the cooler, cooler guy?’ It was Red Bull. He...

Plot: Debbie and Peter have been best friends for 20 years even though they’re total opposites. Practical, risk-averse accountant Debbie craves routine and stability with her son Jack in LA; Stylish brand consultant Peter thrives on change in New York City. When they swap houses and lives for a week, they learn they haven’t told each other everything after all and discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.

The last 20 years have done a number on the romantic comedy. Maligned by disinterested studios churning out tepid derivatives and suffocated by an overbearing discourse marshaled by disappointed fans, the genre can’t seem to catch a break. The headlines have been unsparing: The romantic comedy is dead! The romantic comedy never mattered! Occasionally a film will revive minor faith in the future of the genre, but for the most part recent attempts to save one of cinema’s most cherished categories of comfort food have been forgettable affairs.
Given these circumstances, I approached Your Place or Mine with suspicion and some exasperation. On paper the project has potential: Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher star as Debbie and Peter, the two people we will patiently wait to see fall in love over the course of 2 hours. Both are performers who have built up enough good will over the years to activate our nostalgia.

Good romantic comedies have been a rare beast as of late. Lazy scripts, lackluster directing, and leads with no chemistry have plagued the genre in the last few years. Thankfully, every once in a while, a gem emerges. In this case, it’s writer-director Aline Brosh McKenna’s directorial debut “Your Place Or Mine” starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher that has come to resuscitate the rom-com.

There is nothing particularly original or groundbreaking in the new Netflix rom-com Your Place or Mine, yet it is just that comfortable familiarity in a movie that isn’t trying to rewrite the rules of engagement in a time-worn genre that makes this pleasing confection a perfect Valentine’s Day offering. In fact, it is the streamers who are filling the bill for couples looking for a little love in their moviegoing, and this one marking a stylish feature directorial debut for veteran screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna is sweet enough to make staying at home on the couch for Cupid’s big day a fine alternative to get into the mood.

Your Place or Mine is a romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. You can see it on Netflix. It is written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna.
Two Hollywood stars in the same movie, attractive, one in his home in Manhattan, the other in her house in Los Angeles… we are approaching Valentine´s Day and we know that there are things that can be guessed at a mile away.
Even in this movie, ¡how ironic!

Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher play best friends who swap houses for a week in a bland, if inoffensive, pile of fluff
Valentine’s Day compels many of us to bemoan not just the sorry state of our love lives but also the even sorrier state of the romantic comedy, a genre given a recent rebirth that’s still in need of a jolt back to life. After a distinct dearth, the streamer-led avalanche of 90-minute meet-cutes has certainly been consistent but it’s also been consistently underwhelming, inoffensively so perhaps but also increasingly aggravating to those of us who fondly remember the best of them. Even without expecting a total wheel reinvention, there’s a laziness that niggles – it’s as if these movies are being pumped out by writers and directors who are half-asleep, their focus elsewhere.
One might naively expect a little more from Reese Witherspoon’s...

Reese Witherspoon, who first made a splash 30 years ago, has never lost a drop of her sunny smart charismatic movie-star spunk. Ashton Kutcher, in a career that kicked off in 1998, has had his ups and downs, but he has also grown as an actor, hitting a new peak as the discursive Southern dandy villain of last year’s “Vengeance.” These two are game and seasoned, with a shine of glamour, so teaming them up for a middle-aged romantic comedy sounds perfectly appealing. But what did either of them do to deserve “Your Place or Mine”? It’s a singularly chintzy Netflix rom-com even if you already think of Netflix rom-coms as chintzy. In fact, it’s two bad movies in one.

February might be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be packed. This year brings the expected rom-coms, internationally traveling strippers, and a bear on cocaine. And that’s just on the movie front. There’s plenty to watch on TV, too (though nothing with cocaine bears). But first, the month kicks off with a chiller from M. Night Shyamalan.

Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon’s awkward red carpet photos from the premiere of their Netflix rom-com “Your Place or Mine” have been the source of viral social media memes for over a week now — so much so that Kutcher’s wife, Mila Kunis, emailed the two actors about it. What does Kutcher have to say about it? During an appearance on the “Chicks in the Office” podcast, Kutcher said walking the red carpet with Witherspoon was more or less a losing battle for him.
“Here’s the thing: if I put my arm around her, and was like all friendly with her, I’d be having an affair with her. Like, the rumor would be that I’m having an affair with her,” Kutcher said. “If I stand next to her and put my hands in my pockets so there’s no chance that that could be the rumor,...

Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna makes her feature film directorial debut with the Netflix romantic comedy Your Place or Mine. McKenna really scored with her first directing gig, snagging romantic comedy veterans Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher in starring roles.
Witherspoon and Kutcher play best friends who reside on opposite coasts. Debbie and Peter had a one-night stand 20 years ago and although the romantic relationship ended pretty much as soon as it began, they’ve remained friends through thick and thin. Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, who both have strong resumés of romantic comedy classics, have returned to the genre with Netflix’s Your Place or Mine. The duo star as longtime best friends who live in Los Angeles and New York City, respectively, and decide to swap houses and lives for a week, leading to some romantic revelations along the way.
Witherspoon, who is also a producer on the film, said she was pulled back to the rom-com genre after having a desire to work with writer-director Aline Brosh McKenna, telling The Hollywood Reporter at the L.A. premiere on Thursday it was “one of my dreams to work with her, and to get to work with her as a director.”
“Every day she comes up with funny ideas, she makes everything better,” the star continued, “and then Ashton was just a dream, I was so glad that he wanted to do the movie.

Ashton Kutcher is returning to romantic comedies.
The actor hadn’t been in a rom-com since 2011 when he appeared in “New Year’s Eve” and starred opposite Natalie Portman in “No Strings Attached.” But 12 years later, Kutcher toplines the new Netflix smoocher “Your Place or Mine” with Reese Witherspoon.
“Honestly, I think I had more fun shooting this movie than I ever had,” Kutcher told me Thursday night at film’s premiere in Los Angeles. “It was genuinely a choice. I didn’t need to do it. I didn’t have to do it. It wasn’t like a career-building block. It was like, ‘I want to do this.’”
He gushed over working with Witherspoon. “I got to be in scenes across from a genuine movie star,” Kutcher said. “She’s such a movie star. It was so wonderful and fun and funny and light. There was never a dark day.
