Patching together portraits of his beloved Portland streets, bits of Shakespeare’s Henry IV via Welles’ tumultuous Chimes at Midnight, and vignettes of a narcoleptic vagabond hustler whose motherless anxieties send him travelling through time and space in shimmeringly nostalgic deep sleep, Gus Van Sant‘s My Own Private Idaho is a wildly original amalgam of cultural references and personal investments that transcend a mere tip of the hat. Riding high in the wake of Drugstore Cowboy‘s Hollywood success, Van Sant convinced River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves, two rising Tinseltown heart-throbs, to take a serious risk, committing themselves, against the loudly voiced opinions of their agents, to a pair of overtly homosexual roles in a film that opens with an off-screen blowjob. After River was awarded the prizes for Best Actor from the Venice International Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Awards and the National Society of Film Critics Awards...

Normally we'd be eyeing Liam Hemsworth in the soon-to-be released thriller "Paranoia." But we have a feeling we'll also be focused on the furniture after learning that the film's set will be decked with pieces from Armani/Casa, Giorgio Armani's decor line.
According to Women's Wear Daily, Armani worked closely with production designer David Brisbin on the design and provided sofas, lamps, tables and chairs to outfit the look. "Collaborating with David Brisbin on his vision for this movie provided me with the opportunity to showcase Armani Casa on film in a way that is absolutely believable and appropriate to the story," Armani told Wwd.

Armani, who has been known to provide fashion for movies in the past, also worked closely with the costume designer for "Paranoia." But it looks like with this new endeavor, he'll be gaining some clout in set design once the movie...

The book to film adaptation of Matthew F. ”When prepping to visualize Jacobs and Emily’s houses, production designer David Brisbin and his team visited La Push and met the Quileute executive council. To show appreciation, we decided to put the drum in a prominent shot — it’s at the entrance of Emily’s house, and you see it when Bella first enters. The Twilight Saga: New Moon began shooting in March 2009 in Vancouver and ended in Montepulciano, an ancient walled city in Italy. The two cities provided a strong contrast—the dark nights and mysterious, deep green forests of British Columbia, and the organic, burnished tones of Tuscany inform the film’s look equally. “The light in the Pacific Northwest provides a great deal of diffusion and coolness,” Chris Weitz says. “Within that, there are plenty of beautiful colors, and our intention was to use the lion’s share of them. Shadows are also important —the forest at night, the blackness of depression. “The light is much different in Tuscany,” Weitz notes. “It has much warmer tones and is literally much sunnier, with pops of color from the costumes. The architecture is different as well. Montepulciano is known for its Renaissance architecture, with remnants of medieval architecture as well.” Production designer David Brisbin...

MoviesOnline sat down recently with director Chris Weitz, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, and producer Wyck Godfrey to talk about their new movie, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”
Director Chris Weitz’s success at adapting books for the screen, including “About A Boy” and “The Golden Compass,” made him an obvious choice for this project, says Wyck Godfrey, who produced both “Twilight” and “New Moon.” “Chris has a history of helming fantasy films with complex effects as well as intimate character studies, and he works well with young actors. But it is his appreciation of Stephenie Meyer’s books and characters that made him the perfect director for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”
Melissa Rosenberg is proving to be one of Hollywood’s most versatile and sought-after writers, seamlessly transitioning from television to the silver screen. She wrote the screenplay for the vampire romance phenomenon “Twilight” directed by Catherine Hardwicke based on...

Photo: 20th Century Fox Production Designer David Brisbin walked through the door and proceeded to talk for 24 minutes straight, without taking a break, without taking any questions. If you think that's easy I urge you to give it a try. So clearly the man is excited about the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Here's what he had to say: How He Got Involved
I had done a movie with [director] Scott Derrickson before, so I was thrilled to get invited on another adventure with him. But this was not what I expected he would call back with. The elephant in the room on this one is the original film. When we looked at it we see this stuff that matches today so nicely. The whole obsession with media. The wartime setting. The just being on the threshold of mass paranoia. It's nice that that matches today. It's also...

If you are like me, you are loaded with mixed emotions about the forthcoming The Day The Earth Stood Still remake. Part of me is like, sigh, Wtf, the original is so awesome, Keanu Reeves is a class-a douche, Fox hasn’t made a good “genre” film since X2, and who the hell is Scott Derrickson? But then I look at the trailer and I’m like.....I dunno. Giant glass spheres attacking New York. How could this Not be cool? So maybe I’ll see the movie just for the spheres. The man behind the spheres is production designer David Brisbin, and the groovy people at i09 just posted a really neat chat with him about the look of the film. Check it out to see what he says about the design of the ships, countering what we saw in the first movie and about Gort. (But he doesn...

How do you adapt classic 1951 sci-fi for a 2008 audience?
New Gort On a visit to the set of The Day the Earth Stood Still, ComingSoon.net got treated to a variety of answers. Of course, the filmmakers couldn't mess too much with the trinity of the ship, Klaatu, and Gort. But everything got radically re-imagined. Flying saucers and robots wouldn't pack quite the menace they did for audiences back in the day, and risk seeming old fashioned or just plain funny. And the 2008 audience has been to space a lot over the last half century. The challenge in a nutshell, notes production designer David Brisbin, is "How do you get people in 2008 to say, Oh, s***?"
So the design team talks in detail about the evolution of the film's iconic elements, about how saucers make way for orbs, and about how Gort ended up standing 25 to 30 feet tall.
