The Beatles made their first of three appearances on CBS’ “The Ed Sullivan Show” on Feb 9, 1964. Sullivan knew he had a really big “shew” that night, telling the audience mainly of teeny-boppers and teenage girls that “our theater’s been jammed with newspapermen and hundreds of photographers from all over the world. And these veterans agree with me that the city never has witnessed the excitement stirred by these youngsters from Liverpool…Now tonight you’re going to be twice entertained by them…Ladies and gentlemen, The Beatles.”
Their fans screamed, cried and grabbed their hair when John, Paul, George and Ringo performed “All My Loving,” “Till There Was You” and “She Loves You.” They came back 35 minutes later in the show to sing “I Saw Her Standing There” and their No. 1 hit “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” The ratings for the episode scored to 23.24 million households. Beatlemania was sweeping America before Feb.

Kudos to Powerhouse Indicator for releasing this dramatic propaganda piece based on an actual German churchman imprisoned for refusing to kowtow to the Nazi authorities. It’s a primer on fascist power from early in the war, one of the first features by the Boulting Brothers. Pi’s extras package enlarges our interest ten-fold: the pastor’s objection to the Nazis was grossly misrepresented and the politics of his incarceration were very different. An added bonus are other wartime short subjects by Roy Boulting, from the Imperial War Museum.

Doctor Who, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, The Simpsons... Juliette talks us through 10 great TV anniversary episodes...
With so many TV shows being cancelled after a season or two, it’s perhaps not surprising that those that keep going long enough to reach a significant milestone often want to mark the occasion in some way. Such celebratory episodes usually feature plenty of nods, in-jokes and references to past episodes and characters (frequently involving special guest stars from the show’s past returning in some form) and tend to be either light, sometimes metafictional comedy episodes, or extremely dramatic game-changers following which the show may never be the same again. If you’re not crying with laughter, you’ll probably be weeping at the emotional trauma inflicted by the story.
