Steve Martin has had so many phases in his nearly 60-year career that he’s now recognizable for at least a half dozen different projects. Younger fans who primarily him from his popular Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building” might not be aware that he once starred in multiple hit family comedies, like “Father of the Bride” or “Cheaper by the Dozen.” Others who are familiar with Martin’s extensive film work might not necessary know he’s a gifted banjo player who has frequently played with singer-songwriter Edie Brickell. But anyone born in the last three decades can be forgiven for not knowing that Martin was once the biggest stand-up comedian in America. In the ’70s, he played to enormous sold-out stadium crowds and his act became so well known that it eventually embedded itself within the American consciousness. Many if not most people of a certain age...

Wind gusts quivered the tree limbs, rainfall ricocheted off the roads, and in an instant, power cut off at the old Opera House on Elm Street in Camden, Maine, scuttling screenings there at the Camden International Film Festival.
With that mid-September atmospheric outburst, Hurricane Lee did in the scheduled U.S. premiere of Alex Gibney’s new film In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon. Now, the honor of hosting the American debut goes to the Hamptons International Film Festival this Friday, where the documentary screens as the festival Centerpiece (Simon will appear in person there for a conversation moderated by Rolling Stone’s David Fear). The first thing to say about Alex Gibney’s “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” is that it’s three-and-a-half hours long. Normally I wouldn’t lead with that daunting fact, especially since the film is mostly marvelous: a documentary that every Paul Simon fan on earth should want to see and experience. But will they?
I raise the issue only because “In Restless Dreams” has come into the Toronto Film Festival without a distributor, and let’s just be honest: The 209-minute running time, when you hear about it, doesn’t exactly sound…user-friendly. Gibney, of course, is one of the renaissance masters of contemporary documentary, a filmmaker of staggering skill and eclecticism. On occasion, he sprinkles in a music doc, which is clearly a labor of love for him. If you’ve never seen “Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown,” it’s sensational. And Gibney...

At first, the title of Alex Gibney’s “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” seems as if it could be a warning about the director’s approach in this supersized documentary. The film, its title seems to be saying, is about the music of Simon, not the life or the loves or the times of Simon. But it turns out that the music is a gateway to all those other things in this three-and-a-half hour film that covers most of what you’d want to know about the seminal singer-songwriter.
Partly, that’s because Gibney’s jumping off point is Simon’s new album, “Seven Psalms,” an uncommonly personal and soul-searching work for the man who’s been writing songs for seven decades. A half-hour meditation on faith and mortality that came to Simon in a dream and was written during a time when he’d begun to...

In his latest documentary “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon,” Alex Gibney explores the singer-songwriter’s six-decade career. The Oscar winning director also captures Simon creating his latest album, “Seven Psalms,” which he made while losing hearing in his left ear. Although Gibney is mostly recognized for his rigorously researched investigative exposes, he is also skilled in creating portraits of cultural icons like Simon. In the 209-minute docu Gibney relies on Simon as well as signifigant figures in his life including wife Edie Brickell, Lorne Michaels and Art Garfunkel, who can be heard via archival footage, to tell his story.
In 2019 Gibney premiered his Mikhail Khodorkovsky documentary “Citizen K” at TIFF. “In Restless Dreams” will debut at TIFF on Sept. 10. Gibney is seeking distribution for the film.
Did you have final cut on this docu?
Yes. That was the arrangement we made going into it. I felt good about that.

“People used to say I had my finger on the pulse,” Paul Simon tells Alex Gibney early in his artfully composed documentary, In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon. “I just have my finger out there and the pulse is running under it.” Either way, few people have had as central a role in American pop music and culture as Simon. Gibney, best-known for exposes including The Inventor, about Elizabeth Holmes’ tech-company fraud, and Going Clear, on Scientology, turns out to be the ideal director to explore Simon’s long, varied run.
Simon invited Gibney into his home studio in Wimberly, Texas, where the cameras watch him tinker with the sound on his latest album, Seven Psalms (released in May) and talk about his career, inspirations, aging and what the loss of hearing in his left ear has meant. Paul Simon, 81, has revealed that he is currently experiencing hearing loss in his left ear – and may never perform again.
The loss occurred while he was recording his new album, Seven Psalms. He assumed that this was temporary and that his hearing would return, but so far that has not been the case. “Quite suddenly, I lost most of the hearing in my left ear, and nobody has an explanation for it,” he told the London Times. “So everything became more difficult.”
At first, Simon was frustrated with his hearing loss, but because he thought it would pass, he was not angry.
Now, he has to face the possibility that he may not be able to perform again.

Singer-songwriter Paul Simon, who at 81 has just released his 15th studio album, titled Seven Psalms, has revealed a recent hearing loss in his left ear and says the condition has left him doubting he’ll tour again.
In an interview with UK’s The Times, Simon said the hearing loss struck while he was writing the new album. “Quite suddenly, I lost most of the hearing in my left ear, and nobody has an explanation for it,” he told the publication. “So everything became more difficult.”
The Graceland singer said he was more frustrated and annoyed than angered by the hearing loss “because I thought it would pass, it would repair itself.” The condition, however, has not improved, and he now has doubts that he’ll perform live again, a decision reinforced by both a 2020 bout with Covid and his lack of enthusiasm for singing some of his old songs.

Paul Simon has revealed a new musical project called Seven Psalms, a seven-movement composition meant to be heard as a continuous piece of music rather than an album. Stream it in full below.
Produced by Simon and Kyle Crusham, Seven Psalms sees the legendary singer-songwriter play various acoustic instruments. He’s joined by singer Edie Brickell, as well as the British vocal ensemble VOCES8.
Because the composition is meant to be heard as a single piece of music, Simon didn’t preview Seven Psalms with any singles. However, the artist did share a trailer for the project, in which he revealed the idea for the music came to him in a dream. “On January 15th, 2019, I had a dream that said, ‘You’re working on a piece called Seven Psalms,'” he recalled. “The dream was so strong that I got up and I wrote it down. But I had no idea what that meant.

Paul Simon follows his muse wherever it leads him, whether that meant leaving Simon & Garfunkel at their commercial peak, or opening his debut solo album with “Mother and Child Reunion,” a reggae track recorded in Kingston a full year before the Wailers released Catch a Fire, or helping South African township jive go international with Graceland. Nobody expected him to do those things, and similarly, no one was expecting the 81 year-old singer-songwriter’s newest release—Seven Psalms, a 33-minute suite whose title and concept literally came to him in a dream.

Paul Simon and LL Cool J are successful artists in their respective music genres. While Simon is a folk-rock legend, LL is a hip-hop icon. In the decades since emerging on the scene, each has built an impressive discography. But the two musicians famously hung out on one unforgettable day in 1987. Here’s a look at how their unlikely visit came about and how the folk-rocker shocked the rapper.

LL Cool J and Simon are two of the most influential musicians. Both have long and storied careers, but their approaches to music-making are very different. Simon is famous for his folky, laid-back sound, while LL Cool J is known for his hard-hitting rap lyrics. The former’s style is subtler and more introspective, while the latter’s is more aggressive and direct.

Edie Brickell might not be one of the best-known performers in the music industry. But she’s surprisingly accomplished and influential. The singer-songwriter has an impressive net worth, thanks primarily to her many projects in the entertainment industry. Her marriage to music legend Paul Simon has enhanced her standing in pop culture, and given her a wider audience.
While not all of Brickell’s projects have been successful ones, most notably the recent sale of her expensive home at a significant loss, Brickell is still going strong in the music business, collaborating with other artists, and working on solo projects.

The country music legend is the guest of honor at two nights of tribute concerts — April 29 and 30 — at the Hollywood Bowl in L.A. Dubbed “Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90,” the events are stacked with Willie collaborators, those he’s influenced, and members of his family and Family Band.

For a man who spent the bulk of the 1970s standing on stages all by himself, Steve Martin has a remarkable track record with collaboration in Hollywood. This week’s episode of the Emmy-nominated Only Murders in the Building introduced viewers to the brief (but profitable) music career of Steve Martin’s Charles Haden Savage, who — in the show — had a hit single with “Angel in Flip-Flops.” Now, that in-show gag has become an actual song with the release of the entire track.
As mentioned on Only Murders in the Building, “Angel in Flip-Flops” was a hit in Germany prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, but the single enjoyed a second life as sampling by like “50 rap stars,...

Austin rock duo Black Pumas have shared a reverent cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 classic, “Fast Car.” The band — which comprises singer Eric Burton and guitarist Adrian Quesada — has regularly covered “Fast Car” during their live sets.
Aside from dispensing completely with the drums, Black Pumas’ rendition is fairly faithful to Chapman’s original, with Quesada recreating the tender acoustic progression and lacing a few electric licks of his own on top. Burton, meanwhile, delivers a breathtaking performance, letting his voice rise and fall as he sings, “And I had...

You’d be hard-pressed to find a country artist or songwriter working today who hasn’t been personally affected by Willie Nelson’s music. In honor of the legendary outlaw’s 87th birthday, Edie Brickell has shared her own musical tribute, “Sing to Me, Willie.”
The song captures just how personal Brickell’s relationship is to Nelson’s work, right from the get-go: “We played your music at my daddy’s funeral/And the pastor was amused.” Nelson himself then joins Brickell in a duet, crooning about the untamed beauty of Texas.

The eighth annual Luck Reunion was supposed to draw around 4,000 people to Willie Nelson’s Texas ranch this week, with a lineup that included Nelson, Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Margo Price, Nathaniel Rateliff, and more. Those plans, of course, went out the window due to Covid-19.
Instead of canceling altogether, the small Luck Team — headed up by founders Matt Bizer and Ellee Fletcher — decided to get creative, reviving the festival as a livestream concert, with performers broadcasting from their homes for charity. The result was more impactful than any traditional festival could have been.

Today, 4,000 people were supposed to descend on Willie Nelson’s Texas ranch for the Luck Reunion, one of the most intimate and thrilling music festivals of the year. That plan had be put on hold due to the coronavirus, but instead performers — including Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Jewel, Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, Margo Price, and others — will be performing via livestream.
Micah Nelson, who performs as Particle Kid, will also perform. Micah has put out a series of loose, wild psychedelic albums in the past few years that includes the excellent just-released ‘Live!

When you’re recovering from a break-up by writing a pop song, the ultimate kiss off needs to be wisely executed. Lulu Simon, daughter of Paul, found the formula for a deliciously pissed off break-up bop with her single “Wasted.”
Hailing from the school of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Kiss, “Wasted” is candy-coated synth-bliss that feels nostalgic for recent pop history. On the deceptively upbeat song, Simon regrets the time she wasted on her ex-boyfriend who sucked up her summer months and still cheated on her. She has (mostly) moved on,...
