In their third collaboration following Don’s Party and The Club, David Williamson and Bruce Beresford are developing Nearer the Gods, a biopic about Sir Isaac Newton, the eccentric 17th Century English scientist and mathematician.
Adapted from Williamson’s play which was staged by the Queensland Theatre Co. in 2018, the drama laced with humour will trace Newton’s struggles to persuade the sceptical Royal Society to publish his revolutionary discoveries including formulating the laws of motion and universal gravitation.
The comedy revolves the latter part of his life, much of which he dedicated to theology and predicting the end of the world and the second coming of Christ in the year 2060.

Oh dear.
In a move that will surprise absolutely everyone, Lionsgate U.K. have teamed with Bo’ Selecta! creator Leigh Francis and Paul Angunawela for a big screen incarnation of the former’s Keith Lemon character.
Lemon (aka Francis), who now has six series of Celebrity Juice under his belt, will spend the movie trying to achieve his dream of becoming a successful entrepeneur, in the vein of personal hero Richard Branson.
Verne Troyer will co-star alongside Francis in the project, which has – miraculously – attracted the likes of Generator Entertainment’s Mark Huffam (“Game of Thrones”), Simon Bosanquet (“Whole Lotta Sole”) and Aidan Elliott as producers.
Seriously though, what is the point in having a Development Hell if projects like this are allowed to avert oblivion?
Don’t shoot the messenger, Variety had this one first.

LONDON -- Northern Ireland Screen, the U.K. government-backed film agency and funder, said Monday that it has sealed a deal to support a slate of low-budget movies from fledgling production banner Generator Entertainment.
The funding for "indigenous film production from home-grown talent," comes through the Northern Ireland Screen Fund, supported by agency Invest NI.
Set up by producers Simon Bosanquet ("Ripley's Game") and Mark Huffam ("Mamma Mia"), Generator has an initial slate of five films, four of which will shoot in Northern Ireland in the first half of this year.
Further films are planned to shoot in Northern Ireland for 2008 and '09, the parties said.
The slate is being put together in partnership with Framestore Features and Limelight and is being sold by Robbie Little's Los Angeles-based the Little Film Co.
The first project out of the slate deal with Generator is "Red Mist", a supernatural thriller set in an American teaching hospital based on a script by local writer Spencer Wright, directed by Paddy Breathnach ("Shrooms") and co-produced by Belfast-based Michael Kelly.
