Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is going from the fictional town of Charming to the plains of Oregon for his next ambitious series, The Abandons. The forthcoming Netflix Western adds six cast members to its roster today, with Lucas Till, Diana Silvers, Lamar Johnson, Aisling Franciosi, and Natalia del Riego.
Created and executive produced by Kurt Sutter, The Abdandons “follows a group of diverse, outlier families pursuing their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, as a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, “justice” is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law.” (via Deadline)

I don’t know of many Christmas horror adaptations. Sure, I could probably look at the history of Krampus and piece something together but other than that I’m hard pressed so let me know in the comments what I could cover next holiday season. Winter in general has all sorts of movies and stories that they are based off of. The very first episode of this show was all about The Thing and its source material Who Goes There and now in the middle of winter, at least in Colorado, I think it’s time to look at one of the better vampire properties of the 2000s and a great limited series comic. 30 Days of Night was originally pitched as a movie but when it was turned down, the comic came out and put the author’s name on the map. As is the nature of Hollywood, it...

During the 1990s, there was a brief moment when directors everywhere collectively decided that they were going to make Westerns popular again. From Tombstone to Unforgiven, nostalgic filmmakers pined for the days of operatic shootouts and sweaty protagonists, but that doesn’t mean audiences agreed with them. With a few exceptions, it seemed like the world had in fact moved on from the glory days of Leone and Ford.
The biggest shame is that there were some legitimately thrilling cowboy movies made back then that would have been insanely successful had they been released in another time. My personal favorite of these misfires was Sam Raimi’s tragically underseen Western The Quick and the Dead, a 1995 Sharon Stone vehicle that deserves to be reappraised not only as a satirical pastiche but as a genuinely great example of a classic Western.

A new episode of our The Black Sheep video series was just released through the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, and with this one we’re looking back at director John Carpenter’s 1998 film Vampires (watch it Here). A movie that has its share of fans, but still doesn’t get as much respect as some of Carpenter’s earlier films. To hear why we think Vampires deserves more love, check out the video embedded above.
Scripted by Don Jakoby and inspired by the novel Vampire by John Steakley, Vampires has the following synopsis:
Ever since his parents were murdered by vampires, Jack Crow has had one purpose in life: putting stakes through bloodsuckers’ hearts. With his battle-hardened crew of vampire killers and the assistance of the Catholic Church, Crow roams the New Mexico desert looking for undead lairs to annihilate. "I think they really understand how far her reach goes." Paramount has released the official trailer for a crime thriller titled Ida Red, opening on VOD in November. This actually premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and at Fantasia just last month, though we haven't heard too much about it. "Inspired by films such as Thief, Cruising, Hardcore and Heat, Ida Red is the Neo-Western story of an American crime family in Oklahoma." Crime boss Ida "Red" Walker turns to her son, Wyatt, to help her pull off one last heist to get out of prison before she dies. But with the FBI closing in, Wyatt must choose between family and freedom in this high-octane thriller. Melissa Leo stars as "Ida Red", with an ensemble cast including Josh Hartnett, Sofia Hublitz, William Forsythe, Deborah Ann Woll, George Carroll, Mark Boone Junior, Beau Knapp, and Frank Grillo. This looks solid, and...

I have been known from time to time watch a flick based solely on its cast. Take Sam Rockwell for instance, the trailer could be awful but I’m still going to watch it because it’s Sam ‘freaking’ Rockwell. Recently Frank Grillo has made his way onto this list after a string of spot on supporting roles and the odd leading man performance… So you can imagine my giddy glee to see the man teaming up with The Newsroom‘s Olivia Munn for an “action thriller” romp. The movie is called The Gateway and I’m about to get into it for you all right now!

"Tell me this isn't happening again..." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for The Gateway, an action crime thriller from filmmaker Michele Civetta. Another one of these gritty thrillers about man-returns-from-prison and gets caught up in all kinds of shady deals, leading to a big showdown with all kinds of other crime kingpins. But there's a good guy trying to help, too! Shea Whigham stars as a social worker assigned to the care of the daughter of a single mother, who decides to intervene when the dad returns from prison and lures them into a life of crime. The impressive cast includes Olivia Munn, Taryn Manning, Mark Boone Junior, Taegen Burns, with Frank Grillo and Bruce Dern (sportin' a shotgun). This actually looks better than your average crime thriller, with some slick cinematography (from Dp Bryan Newman). The second half of this trailer also boasts some intense action. This might...

On March 16, 2001, Christopher Nolan announced himself to the world with the US release of Memento. Not that everyone heard him straight away.
Despite garnering rave reviews on the festival circuit, Nolan’s mind-bending jigsaw puzzle of a movie failed to land a major distribution deal in the States. In the end Newmarket Films, the independent production company bankrolling the project, took the plunge and distributed it themselves.
Memento went on to earn more than $45 million at the US box office from a $4.5 million budget – a huge sum for an independent film.
Within five years, Nolan would move on to bigger and Bat-er things, but Memento remains among his most ambitious and effective films to date. A non-linear neo-noir that doubles up as a psychological thriller, it’s a film that continues to offer up subtle surprises on repeat viewing.

Unsurprisingly, Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano captured all of The Mandalorian headlines this week after finally bringing the fan favorite into live-action. The actress did so in spectacular fashion, too, with Dave Filoni making the right call in opening the episode with an action sequence to both send The Clone Wars fans into raptures and also make it perfectly clear to viewers who don’t follow the expanded lore that the dual-wielding Jedi is a badass and force to be reckoned with.
There was a lot going on in “The Jedi,” as Ahsoka sliced and diced her way even deeper into the hearts of the fanbase, while Baby Yoda was given an extensive backstory that tied the freshly rebranded Grogu directly to the events of Revenge of the Sith and Order 66, with Grand Admiral Thrawn getting name-dropped for good measure.
Amidst all the excitement, though, a lot of people failed...

Y’know that scruffy-looking or somehow slick and greasy-looking character you tend to see in so many movies? Yeah, Mark Boone Junior, that guy.
