Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” is one of the sweetest movies of the year and is set to become a new Christmas classic. Written by David Hemingson and directed by Alexander Payne, the 1970s-set story follows Paul Giamatti as a school professor tasked with staying behind on campus to look after students not going home for Christmas. What follows is a charming, touching tale about two foes who learn to become friends. Giamatti gives a knockout performance while Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a hot contender for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a cook mourning the death of her son. The movie’s strongest point, however, is its writing.
“Whiskey Cavalier” creator and “Black-Ish” and “American Dad!” scribe David Hemingson crafted the script. He has never been nominated for an Oscar before but we expect that that he’ll win one this year. We’re predicting he will take home...

CAA-backed Anonymous Content Brazil, a joint venture between Anonymous Content and Rodrigo Teixeira’s Rt Features, is teaming up with Oscar-winning screenwriter-producer-director Armando Bo (“Birdman”) and his sister companies, About Entertainment and film-ad production company Rebolucion, to develop and co-produce television series and advertising content for the Latin American market.
The three-year co-development and co-production agreement will call for the sourcing of IP and original content from writers across Latin America to build a strong Spanish-language slate aimed at regional audiences and beyond.
Through their partnership with Rebolucion, Anonymous Content Brazil will also venture into producing advertising commercials out if its Sao Paulo base.
Rebolucion, in Brazil since 2011, will continue running independently while providing strategic and business support to the new ad commercials division, in which it will be a minority partner.

John Waters looks positive giddy as he perches on the edge of his chair at the Provincetown Film Festival, chuckling as he recalls the bad reviews Variety gave him back in the day.
I recall one from the 1974 write-up for “Female Trouble” — “‘Camp’ is too elegant a word to describe it all” — and he rolls his eyes at the word “camp.” “No one says that word anymore,” he laughs. “To me, ‘camp’ is like two older gay gentlemen talking about Tiffany lampshades in an antique shop. We were never that. We used ‘trash’ or ‘filth,’ which was more punk, to describe our style.”
Trade reviews offered a strange sort of validation for the budding “smut-eur,” who would take the put-downs and twist them to his advantage back in the early ’70s, turning bad blurbs into good publicity for his gonzo stunts. When Fine Line rereleased Waters’ most notorious film, 1972’s “Pink Flamingos,...

Peter Lanzani, star of some of the greatest films and series to come out of Argentina of late – “Argentina, 1985,” “El Angel,” “The Clan,” “4X4,” “Un Gallo Para Esculapio” – is set to make his directorial debut, helming a biopic of Argentine ‘80s rock icon Luca Prodan. Lanzani will also play Prodan.
Two other movers and shakers on Argentina’s film-tv scene, Argentina’s Armando Bo, an Academy Award winner for the screenplay of Alejandro González Inárritu’s “Birdman, or, Sergio Olguín, Lanzani and Fisner are writing the screenplay.

In the past few years, director Alejandro González Iñárritu has racked up critical and commercial acclaim for his award-winning films “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and “The Revenant.” The former won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, and the latter won three Oscars, including Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Director for Iñárritu, making him the third director to win back to back Academy Awards. In other words, his style and approach have become easily identifiable by the filmgoing public.

The 11th annual Lausanne Underground Film Festival is packed to the gills with outrageous cinema from all over the world, featuring several filmmaker retrospectives and movies screening in competition at several locations on Oct. 17-21.
The big guest of honor this year is the legendary John Waters, who will be attending the fest with several of his own classics, such as Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble and Desperate Living, as well as showing some of his favorite B-movie inspirations, such as William Girdler’s blaxploitation demonic possession flick Abby, Armando Bo’s Argentinian sexploitation Fuego, Robinson Devor’s controversial bestiality doc Zoo and more. Plus, Waters will perform his acclaimed “This Filthy World” one-man show.
Other Luff special guests include Christoph Schlingensief, the confrontational German filmmaker of 100 Years of Adolf Hitler, The German Chainsaw Massacre, The 120 Days of Bottrop and more; Richard Stanley, the South African genre filmmaker of the cult...

After the last two weeks’ blogs on highlights of Toulouse’s Cinélatino film festival, this week will conclude with a selection of films which, in my opinion, should be avoided at all costs. First of all, Alejo Franzetti’s The Destruction of the Ruling Order (La Destrucción del orden vigente), which wanted to be a thriller/murder mystery. Unfortunately, wooden acting made it more like a failed comedy. From the very first moment, the film felt passé, the style of its music and title sequence vaguely evocative of Almodovar’s early work: a film of La Movida, 30 years late. It was as though the film itself were on ketamine, the protagonist’s drug of choice. Clara tries to find out how her boyfriend died. At the same time, she receives mysterious fake newspapers with headlines warning her to investigate her mother’s death—‘it was not a heart attack’, they say cryptically.

I love the Sundance Film Festival. The winners of the fest normally have long legs enough to last all the way until the Oscars. This year, for example, "Pariah" was one of the breakout hits from Sundance, and the Dee Rees coming-of-age flick is being distributed by Focus this month. Its star, Adepero Oduye, recently received the Best Female Lead nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards.
So now, Sundance has unveiled its in-competition slate for 2012 and the films, as always, are quite intriguing. The fest runs from Jan. 19th to the 29th in Park City, Utah. Check out the full list below:

Park City, Ut – Sundance Institute announced today the films selected for the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The Sundance Film Festival will take place January 19 through 29 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. The complete list of films is available at www.sundance.org/festival.
Robert Redford, Founder and President of Sundance Institute remarked, “We are, and always have been, a festival about the filmmakers. So what are they doing? What are they saying? They are making statements about the changing world we are living in. Some are straight-forward, some novel and some offbeat but always interesting. One can never predict. We know only at the end, and I love that.”
John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In these challenging economic times, filmmakers have had to be more resourceful and truly independent in their approaches to filmmaking.

The Sundance Film Festival is the largest independent cinema festival in the United States. Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, the festival is a showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. The Festival has changed over the decades from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators from outside the Hollywood system to a media extravaganza for Hollywood celebrity actors, paparazzi, and luxury lounges set up by companies that are not affiliated with Sundance.
Now the festival is getting ready for the 2012 edition and today they announced the films competing in all categories.

Every January, a little film festival called the Sundance Film Festival is held in Park City, Utah, and Sundance has officially announced the first half of this year’s Sundance 2012 competition line-up. This year 58 individual films are gunning for the top award in four different competition categories. The second half of the Sundance lineup will be introduced tomorrow. Going to the Sundance Film Festival is one of my favorite movie events of the year, and I'm excited for what they have going on for 2012. I just love hanging around in cold snowy weather and watching movies all day. Today the 2012 Sundance Film Festival has announced its line-up for competition films. Snow is falling, the temperature is dropping, movies are getting better. Some might say it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas but I say it's beginning to look a lot like Sundance. The 2012 Sundance Film Festival announced its first batch of films Wednesday, all of which are in competition. Meaning these are the films eligible for awards. It also means that, as of right now, these are the films you probably haven't heard of. But, at this time last year [1], the competition films included a ton that you've surely now heard of such as Another Earth, Circumstance, Like Crazy, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Pariah, The Guard, Tyrannosaur and Take Shelter. Those were just the narratives. In last year's documentary competition, films like Beats, Rhymes and Life, Being Elmo, How to Die in Oregon, Page One, Knuckle, Project Nim and Senna all played. Basically, while you probably haven't heard of these movies yet,...

It seems like we are only just diving into the awards season, but the 2012 film year is right around the corner. There is no better place to get a tast of what is to come than Park City Utah in late January. We’ll be attending the fest again (read last year’s round-up) and today we have the first competition titles. This is the same group from last year which titles include Martha Marcy May Marlene, Like Crazy, Another Earth, Pariah, Being Elmo, Take Shelter and many more. Are there more great films to be found this year? I have no doubt the line-up below will include break-out titles, so lets get to it.
At first glance, the most notable film is Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer, who last directed Afterschool and is in the Martha Marcy trio. It is easily my most-anticipated from this group, along with Quentin Dupieux‘s Rubber follow-up Wrong.

The following is excepted from a piece I wrote about Sarli for The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog. Churches and military dictatorships censored her movies. Audiences around the world ogled her sexually charged performances. Her exuberant, sensual onscreen presence elicited widespread admiration from filmmakers around the world and adoration from the media. Madrid -- Oscar winner Javier Bardem will star in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Biutiful," set to start shooting next week in Barcelona, Mod Producciones announced Thursday.
The film is Gonzalez Inarritu's first project without his regular scriptwriter, Guillermo Arriaga. The director wrote the Spanish-language "Biutiful" script with Armando Bo and Nicolas Giacobone.
Arriaga and Gonzalez Inarritu made waves with their first hit, "Amores Perros," in 2000 and then followed up with English-language hits "21 Grams" and "Babel" to form a much-acclaimed trilogy.
Bardem, hot off Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," in which he starred opposite Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johannsson, will play a man searching for balance and his children's safety after a broken love affair.
The co-production between maverick Spanish producer Fernando Bovaira's Mod and Mexico's Menageatroz -- which groups Gonzalez Inarritu with fellow Mexican helmers Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro -- will shoot for 13 weeks in Spain.
