Describing what happens in Wes Anderson‘s Moonrise Kingdom will take some time. It’ll sound like a seemingly random series of characters and quirks that don’t have much relation to each other, but as you’re watching the film, every single one of them not only seems natural, but completely necessary. This film takes place off the coast of New England, in the mid-’60s, only because I think it’s an appropriate time for Anderson to use some of the pop music he likes. The time period doesn’t matter, though, not in a Wes Anderson film. They take place, anywhere, and wherever he wants them too, and rewrites the rules as he sees fit. There’s a few things that he always has: funny insert shots, often with words elaborating on something, that play similar to title cards in silent films, he has wide-angle dolly shots,...

The 2012 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards 2012 was a curious year for movies. To look at a year in movies at a glance we often turn straight to blockbusters and in the case of 2012 it may seem as if it really wasn't that great a year. Then you begin to drill down deeper and even films that divided the audience created large amounts of discussions, and beyond blockbusters there were plenty of middle ground to small-budget indie features that were quite powerful. As far as discussion pieces go, here on RopeofSilicon a lot of time was dedicated to divisive films as The Grey, Prometheus and Looper. A conversation involving the ending of The Grey was quite popular, I posed theories on Looper's theme more than once, the Zero Dark Thirty torture controversy was annoying, but necessary and the movie that probably generated the most conversation was Prometheus, of which I wrote a massive six-page exploratory article.

Moonrise Kingdom
Directed by: Wes Anderson
Cast: Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman
Running Time: 1 hr 34 mins
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: October 16, 2012
Plot: A pair of kids (Gilman, Hayward) run away on a New England island, which causes parents, troop leaders and the police to go searching.
Who’S It For? I would be shocked if this is the movie that makes you like Wes Anderson films. To me, it fits very nicely along side Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums.
Movie:
Are you allowed to refer to a film as having a “Wes Anderson vibe” if you’re actually watching a film by Anderson? I say yes. He’s capable of making you immediately know you’re sitting down for one of his movies and I’m not referring to his name flashing up on the big screen. I’m talking about everything else he does.

Behold, a Wes Anderson-styled behind-the-scenes featurette from a new Wes Anderson film!
In this exclusive clip from "Moonrise Kingdom," fans get a closer look at tough-guy Bruce Willis in a very non-tough-guy role (a nice local cop named Captain Sharp). Narrated by Bob Balaban, the video shows Willis taking on big actor stuff: Driving! Running! Fake rain! However, that part where he hangs upside-down? That wasn't Bruce. It was -- as Balaban explains -- a stunt double. You can check it all out in the video above.
Set in 1960s New England, "Moonrise Kingdom" tells the story of Sam (Jared Gilman), a young boy who runs away from home with childhood crush Suzy (Kara Hayward). Heading up the rescue effort is Sharp (Willis), Scout Master Ward (Ed Norton), Laura Bishop (Frances McDormand) and her husband, Walt (Bill Murray). The film hits theaters on May 25.
Keep an eye out tomorrow for the second "Moonrise" featurette,...

One of this summer's highly anticipated movies includes a cast of misfit characters directed by a fan favorite director. No, we're not talking about Joss Whedon's The Avengers. Rather, Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom (though star Edward Norton did play an Avenger in 2008's The Incredible Hulk).
To help you get acquainted with this cast of misfits, the studio released character posters introducing Scout Master Ward (Norton), Captain Sharp (Bruce Willis), Walt Bishop (Bill Murray), Laura Bishop (Frances McDormand), Custodial Guardian (Tilda Swinton), Cousin Ben (Jason Schwartzman), and Commander Pierce (Harvey Keitel).
Next Showing: Moonise Kingdom opens May 25th

Meet Walt and Laura Bishop. In the summer of 1965, their 12-year-old daughter, Suzy, fell in love with a young Khaki Scout from a nearby camp on the New England island where they vacation. That whirlwind romance sets in motion the events of Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson’s next film, due May 25. Click within the animated image below to get a glimpse into the Bishops’ lives and follow some of the scouts on the trail of the young lovebirds.
Murray, who’s starred in six of Anderson’s films, including the beloved Rushmore, has called Moonrise “one of the funniest I’ve ever been in.
