There’s an infamous anecdote about a scientist who was presenting a lecture on how earth and other celestial bodies orbit around larger bodies. When he finished the lecture, an old lady supposedly stood up and claimed that the scientist was wrong because the world wasn’t floating in outer space but was in fact supported on the back of a giant turtle. When asked what was supporting the turtle, the old lady replied: “it’s turtles all the way down.”

A fun thing about getting into old musicals after watching "The Simpsons" your whole life is that you'll find yourself experiencing a never-ending string of realizations like, "Oh, so this is where that 'Simpsons' scene came from." Such is the case for "The Music Man," the 1962 musical about a conman who goes into a naive small town, stirs up a moral panic, and then uses said panic to sell them band instruments. This is all encapsulated in the musical number "Ya Got Trouble," where main character Harold Hill (Robert Preston) uses his charisma to get the town fully on board with his money-making scheme.
To a "Simpsons" fan, the song's tone, meaning, and rhythm should quickly feel familiar. That's because it's the same basic song Lyle Lanley (voiced by Phil Hartman) sings to the town of Springfield to get them to invest in a monorail they don't need.

Matthew Perry will most often be remembered for his wit and charm, but there was so much more to him.
The pilot script of “Friends” had a lot of heat at the agencies and young actors both familiar and fresh were vying for the roles.
There was interest and momentum for Craig Bierko to play the role of Chandler Bing, and until Craig said he wasn’t interested, Matthew stayed in the background because he didn’t want to compete with his friend. Who says show business has to be cut throat?
Once we saw and heard Matthew’s audition we knew that our prayers had been answered. The role we had struggled mightily with throughout the casting process was now cast. Or was it? We couldn’t have Matthew in first position because he’d made a sci-fi pilot for Fox called “Lax 2194” about baggage handlers in the future.

The world was rocked this weekend by the passing of actor Matthew Perry, only 54 years old and best known for his role as "Chandler Bing" on "Friends" — the sitcom for which "popular" doesn't begin to describe its reputation. And yet, Perry could have missed out on the part that made him famous and ended up on the wrong side of a Hollywood "what-if" story. The actor recounted the close call in his memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," published in 2022 and written in a conversational (and occasionally vulgar) style.
Let's set the scene: It's 1994 and Perry has a part in a sitcom pilot. Not on "Friends," but on "L.A.X. 2194." You've probably never heard of it. It's a workplace comedy about baggage handlers at Los Angeles International Airport ... but set in the year 2194. The leads, draped in futuristic costumes right out of "Star Wars," would be handling the luggage of alien tourists.

Matthew Perry, the affable actor who became a television superstar playing Chandler Bing on the beloved NBC sitcom Friends, had died. He was 54.
Perry died Saturday in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home, law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times. Authorities responded around 4 p.m. to his home, where he was discovered unresponsive, they said.
While Perry had achieved massive success as part of Friends, one of the most successful shows of all time, he also battled alcohol and substance abuse for decades.
Debuting in 1994, Friends, of course, followed the lives and loves of six young New Yorkers trying to find themselves as they banded together for support. Through their ups and downs, trials and tribulations, one thing remained constant (as affirmed by the show’s theme song): These friends would always be there for each other.
Striking a chord with twenty-somethings everywhere, Friends was a ratings powerhouse.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. But sometimes we talk to filmmakers! About filmmakers!
Today we talk to up-and-coming writer/director Andrew Adams whose debut feature American Meltdown is making a robust festival run as we speak!
He joins us to spearhead our first incarnation of “The First Frame:” a B-Side segment in which we examine the first films of legendary filmmakers. The three pictures we focus on today are My Best Friend’s Birthday by Quentin Tarantino, Sour Grapes by Larry David, and Barking Dogs Never Bite by Bong Joon-ho.
We discuss our love for these three masters, the seeds of their genius in each of their debuts (as well as each piece’s shortcomings), and the strange connection between all three of them.

Updated, Day 46: After visiting many, many picket lines over the last month, we’ve learned that lots of pickets signs are reused for conservation purposes. And to that we say — screw the recycling. Bring on more of those sweet corporate burns!
Fortunately, many of the scribes haven’t lost their saucy touch.

“Ted Sarandos ate my son,” says another.

One of the most surprising hits of 2021 on Netflix is returning next month.
The official trailer for Sex/Life Season 2 is here, and it looks like Billie will have a new love interest in mind.
The trailer also seemingly confirms that it's all over between Billie and Cooper.
"I'm not [upset], I'm just done," Cooper says.
Things aren't much better with Brad, either.
"I came to you six months ago with a ring," he tells her, adding the following:
"You said no, and now it's too late."
As for the new man in Billie's life, Majid (played by Darius Homayoun), he looks like a lot of fun.
The first season featured plenty of steamy twists that got the fans talking -- and streaming.
Will the show be able to live up to its moniker again for the second time?
We'll need to tune in when the series returns, but if the trailer is any indication,...

Our “Sex/Life” is now back on track.

Fans of “UnREAL” received quite the surprise invitation last week: not just one last trip to the “Everlasting” mansion — only three months after the Emmy-nominated drama ended its third season — but a new address. Instead airing weekly on Lifetime, the entire season is now streaming on Hulu.
With the release, “UnREAL’s” creators close the book on a fond memory. Not only did the series prove to be a crucial stepping stone in Lifetime’s quest to redefine its brand and invest in more challenging, quality fare, but when it originally premiered in June 2015, the pilot of “UnREAL” stood out for its freshness; it wasn’t content to introduce “women behaving badly” as its characters’ defining element, and instead crafted a whole tableau of complicated women rich with flaws and vulnerabilities.
It also did so against one of the more shallow backdrops you could imagine — a downright eerie parody of...

Constance Zimmer believes that bringing in a female suitor for season three of “UnReal” created a dynamic “that we haven’t seen before” between her character, the tough-as-nails producer Quinn, and her protege Rachel (Shiri Appleby). In its first two seasons this satirical behind-the-scenes look at a reality dating competition series featured bachelors searching for love among casts of eligible women. This year the sexes were flipped, with determined career woman Serena Wolcott (Caitlin FitzGerald) sifting through a variety of men. “It made both of them very aware of how much they take down women, even though that’s not their goal,” Zimmer explains. The two had to ask themselves, “How do you manipulate and empower a woman at the same time?” Watch our exclusive video interview with Zimmer above.

Despite the long wait for this third season, fans shouldn't worry too much that the UnREAL TV show will be cancelled by Lifetime. The cable network already renewed it for season four, back in July of 2017 and soon after began casting the next, reportedly shorter, installment. Let’s get this out of the way: “UnREAL” Season 3 still lacks the scintillating spark that made the show’s debut must-see TV, but it has also made marked, knowing improvements after a sophomore run that crashed and burned (so to speak). The first five episodes are so annoying uneven, it’s hard to settle on a declarative reaction. On the one hand, using a suitress (rather than a suitor) to wisely keep the focus on women pays off in better arcs for Quinn (Constance Zimmer) and Rachel (Shiri Appleby) — so yay, “UnREAL” is good again! But on the other, the suitress herself (played by the wonderful Caitlin Fitzgerald) is poorly utilized, and just when the show starts rolling, it inexplicably and maddeningly derails itself — so boo, “UnREAL” is still a mess.
