As the town takes off for the holidays and comes to a virtual standstill, the Oscar race roars on as eagle-eyed pundits continue to fanatically parse yesterday’s release of the shortlist in 10 categories (3 of them shorts) that could, I said could, give clues as to the ways the Oscar winds are blowing towards the start of nomination voting on January 11.
Meanwhile, the level of Q&As, talk show appearances, various honors announcements coming almost daily from the Palm Springs and Santa Barbara Film Festival, nominations from Golden Globes and Critics Choice, plus invites to parties have kept us hopping ever since the SAG strike ended and actors could once again do what they do best – talk about themselves. By the way, yesterday they announced Jo Koy as the Globes host and that follows the announcement of Chelsea Handler returning...

The greatest film score of 2023 isn’t eligible for an Academy Award. That’s because Leonard Bernstein composed it between 1944 and 1977, multiple pieces that collectively form the musical backdrop of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper’s film about the 20th century American composer-conductor.
The classical excerpts functioning as dramatic score include Bernstein’s ballets “Fancy Free” and “Facsimile,” parts of his Broadway scores for “West Side Story” and “Candide,” his opera “A Quiet Place,” music for the film “On the Waterfront,” portions of his second and third symphonies as well as his “Mass” and “Chichester Psalms.”
“I think of the score as the co-star of the film,” says the composer’s oldest daughter, Jamie Bernstein. “We knew that Bradley wanted to use our dad’s music in the score, but I don’t think, in the beginning, we even grasped how much of a presence it would wind up having in the film.

In her graceful portrayal of Felicia Montealegre Bernstein in “Maestro” — opposite director Bradley Cooper — Carey Mulligan turns what might have been Cooper’s solo performance into a duet. Born in Costa Rica and raised in Chile, Felicia is an up-and-coming actor in New York City when she goes to a party and meets Lenny, an ambitious conductor and composer. After they marry in 1951, she has three children with her lightning bolt of a husband, who is sexually oriented more toward men.
But she’s not pathetic; Felicia is Lenny’s partner in every sense of the word. In a way, Felicia is the consummate Mulligan performance: Her simmering interiority meshes with Cooper’s magnetism, which is Mulligan’s own form of conducting.
Mulligan first began talking to Cooper about “Maestro” in the summer of 2018, after he came to see her in the Off Broadway play “Girls & Boys.” Cooper had completed “A Star Is Born,...

Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre’s children Nina Maria Felicia Bernstein, Jamie Bernstein and Alexander Bernstein are opening up about how much their mother knew about their father’s bisexuality.
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Bradley Cooper and correspondent Mo Rocca sat down with the three kids to discuss Netflix’s upcoming film Maestro, which Cooper starred in, directed and co-wrote with Josh Singer.
“Our mom was the most elegant, delicious person,” Nina said. Jamie added, “She knew exactly what the deal was.” Alexander chimed in, “They, obviously, loved each other to death. They never fought in front of us. We never saw any darkness. We felt a lot. They kept everything very well tidied and pretty well hidden.”
The segment explained that while Bernstein and Montealeagre truly loved each other, their relationship was complicated by the fact that the legendary composer had affairs with men over the course of their marriage.

It’s been about seven weeks since the Bradley Cooper “Jewface” controversy broke. Remember that? It’s easy to forget because it was so ridiculous. For a minute or two, several parties seemed to get their knickers in a twist over the fact that Cooper opted to wear a big prosthetic nose while portraying the legendary composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro,” the biopic he directed, co-wrote and stars in that had its North American premiere this week at the New York Film Festival. (The film launches in select theaters on November 22 before dropping December 20 onto Netflix.)
The furor seemed to have been sparked in mid-August by the release over social media of first-look photos and an early trailer from the film whose angle made the nose appear semi-gargantuan. It suddenly became a thing all over the entertainment world for a good week or so, casting a dark light on the...

Director Pedro Almodovar “didn’t pay a lot of attention” to Westerns early in his life because he didn’t think the Spaghetti Western movies he was exposed to at the time were very good. But around when he was 18 he discovered American Westerns and “fell completely in love with the genre.” Now he has made a romantic Western short film, “Strange Way of Life,” and discussed it at the New York Film Festival. Watch his complete Q&a below.
It was “in the last three years that I started writing this,” Almodovar explained about this script, about two men (Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal) who are reunited after decades apart, but divided again by loyalty to their families. “I didn’t know it would become a short, but sometimes I write just for fun, and then I have many set pieces in my computer, and sometimes those set pieces...

Bradley Cooper was so committed to staying in character during the filming of his upcoming Leonard Bernstein biopic, Maestro, that he spent five-hour sessions in makeup for the parts of the movie when he appeared as the composer in his 70s.
While speaking at the New York Film Festival on Monday (October 2nd), Oscar-winning makeup artist Kazu Hiro said (via Entertainment Weekly) that Cooper also moved up the film’s already-early call times to 1:00 a.m. toward the end of filming to ensure he would only appear in front of the cast and crew while fully transformed — controversial prosthetic nose and all.
“The last stage, he had covered pretty much everywhere, the bodysuit and arms. That took over five hours,” Hiro recalled. “Our call time was 1 in the morning. The other thing was he wanted makeup to be finished before the crew call, so he would appear as Lenny...

“Maestro” director and star Bradley Cooper made an inconspicuous appearance at the New York Film Festival premiere, skipping press in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA.
Fitting for a film that focuses on legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein, the starry premiere marked a homecoming given its location: David Geffen Hall, home of the New York Philharmonic. On Sept. 23, 1962, Bernstein and the Philharmonic performed the inaugural concert at the venue. Bernstein served as the orchestra’s conductor from 1958 to 1969 and laureate conductor from 1969 to 1990.
Before the lights in the auditorium dimmed, Cooper was spotted sporting a buzz cut and chatting with notable guests, including Netflix’s Scott Stuber, Laura Dern, Shawn Levy and Jeremy Strong.

The makeup artist for “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper’s biopic of famed conductor Leonard Bernstein, feels bad about the controversy over the nose prosthetics he gave the film’s lead. Kazu Hiro spoke about the backlash over the large nose at a Venice Film Festival press conference for the film.
“I wasn’t expecting that to happen. I feel sorry that I hurt some people’s feelings,” Hiro said at the press conference. “My goal was, and Bradley’s goal was, to portray Lenny as authentic as possible. Lenny had a really iconic look that everybody knows — there’s so many pictures out there because he’s photogenic, too.”
The nose was an issue for some due to the feeling that it played to antisemitic tropes and that the Jewish composer’s actual nose wasn’t as large as what Cooper was seen wearing in photos from the film. Cooper himself is not Jewish.

The makeup artist for Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro responded Saturday at the Venice Film Festival to the recent backlash over the film’s prosthetic nose.
Cooper was absent in Venice because he’s chosen to support the SAG-AFTRA strike by not walking the red carpet for his film, which he wrote, directs and stars in. But a large contingent of crew members — as well as Leonard Berstein’s daughter, Jamie Bernstein — were on hand at the festival to discuss Maestro and its creation. It didn’t take long at the press conference before makeup artist Kazu Hiro was asked about the backlash that has engulfed the film on social media in recent weeks. The Maestro team came under criticism in some quarters for Cooper’s decision to wear a prosthetic nose for his portrayal of the iconic Jewish composer, which some claimed was unnecessarily partaking in anti-Semitic stereotypes.

The Maestro team came under criticism in some quarters for Cooper’s decision to wear a prosthetic nose for his portrayal of the iconic Jewish composer, which some claimed was unnecessarily partaking in anti-Semitic stereotypes.

The makeup artist behind Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein movie Maestro has said he didn’t expect the backlash to the film’s prosthetic nose, which has been criticised by some as an example of ‘jewface’.
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival press conference for the film, Kazu Hiro was asked about the social media backlash: “I wasn’t expecting it to happen. I feel sorry if I hurt some people’s feeling. I wanted to portray Lenny as real as possible. He’s photogenic and a great person, we wanted to respect and love that look. We did several different tests. That was our [only] intention.”
The movie has been the subject of some controversy in recent weeks due to Cooper — who is not Jewish — using prosthetics to enlarge his nose to capture Jewish composer. Bernstein’s family has defended the actor-director.

“Maestro” makeup designer Kazu Hiro has responded to backlash over Bradley Cooper’s nose prosthetic in the upcoming film, in which he portrays iconic conductor Leonard Bernstein.
“I wasn’t expecting that to happen… I feel sorry that I hurt some people’s feelings,” Hiro said during a press conference at Venice Film Festival on Saturday. “My goal was and Bradley’s goal was to portray Lenny as authentic as possible. Lenny had a really iconic look that everybody knows — there’s so many pictures out there because he’s photogenic, too — such a great person and also inspired so many people. Bradley Cooper has had a fascinating career, with comedic roles in some of the best and some of the biggest comedies of the past 20 years, as well as more dramatic roles. But it was really his move towards directing with "A Star Is Born" that showed Cooper had more to offer the film world, with a stunning debut that resulted in some of the catchiest songs of the past few years, a new karaoke staple, and arguably the best of the "A Star Is Born" remakes.
Now, for his next project, Cooper is aiming for the Oscar with a film that feels very much like an auteur flexing his unique vision — "Maestro." The upcoming film is about the late composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, and in order to tell the story, Cooper held a closed and controlled environment, while getting a very close look at Bernstein's life by shooting in the conductor's actual home.

Jamie Bernstein, the eldest daughter of famed composer Leonard Bernstein, is defending Bradley Cooper’s portrayal of the music icon in the upcoming Netflix movie “Maestro,” which world premieres Sept. 2 at the Venice Film Festival. Cooper, who directed the film and stars as Bernstein, has come under fire in recent weeks due to his decision to wear a prosthetic nose. He worked with Oscar winner Kazu Hiro to create the controversial prosthetic.
“It’s just such an annoying distraction,” Jamie Bernstein told Vanity Fair about the backlash. “The people who were waiting to get mad about something were just waiting to pounce.”
Jamie, along with her siblings Alexander and Nina, released a joint statement defending Cooper’s nose prosthetic shortly after Netflix debuted the first “Maestro” trailer, which accelerated the controversy.

Director Ivo van Hove will stage a major new production of West Side Story for Broadway next season, with new choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. The revival, produced by Scott Rudin, will begin performances December 10, 2019, with an official opening night of February 6, 2020, at a theater to be announced.
“This is Ivo van Hove’s first Broadway musical,” said Stephen Sondheim, the classic musical’s lyricist, “and I’m eager to see what he does with it. What keeps theater alive over time is reinterpretation, and when that reinterpretation is as invigorating as his productions of A View from the Bridge and The Crucible, it makes for something to look forward to with excitement.”
