For his latest video review, Kev is back in the booth to talk about Coz Greenop’s latest flick The Last Heist, a bank robber British gangland flick starring Perry Benson, Terry Stone, Sam Gittens and more.
The four thieves bounded by honor meet back at the local boozer, the place where it all began. Beneath the banter lies a dark secret that test the loyalty of these four friends to the limit to see if there really is honor among thieves.

The Last Heist opens with Mick talking to his son Slips telling him he doesn’t want him following in his footsteps. And that he has an “insurance policy” to help prevent that from happening.
In the next scene, we’re at his funeral. He went to the grave with the nature of that policy still a secret. But Slips believes it’s stashed in a safe deposit box his father kept under an alias. With no other options, he pulls his old crew, Waldorf, Prozac and Fisherman (Ricky London) together for what should be the last heist they’ll need to pull off.
Director Coz Greenop and writers Michael Head and Lucinda Royden don’t structure The Last Heist as a straightforward bank robbery film.

A ripe crew of wrong’uns hole up in a bar to pick over a raid gone awry, but does deliver one welcome departure from cliche
You might find it reassuring that, even as the pound yo-yos and democracy unravels, there will forever be a corner of the British film industry that is grim-faced geezers in boozers toting shotguns and plotting shenanigans. This very late entry in a cycle initiated during the Blair administration attempts something a little more characterful than usual, as signalled by the presence of the great Perry Benson in the prologue as a bar owner who corks it before giving up his life insurance details to his son.
The Last Heist then involves an hour of perilously muggy business, as the lad recalls his old gang to Perry’s bar to work out where their raid on the recalcitrant insurers went bloodily awry. It’s a...

Not all comic-book movies have to be about superheroes or heroes at all for that matter. Case in point: Accident Man. Originally debuting in a series of comic strips in the 90s, Accident Man was created by Pat Mills and Tony Skinner – two legends of the UK comics scene. For those not familiar with the Mills and Skinner creation, Mike Fallon is a hitman, a stone-cold killer and the best at what he does. Yet he’s no ordinary hitman. Instead, Fallon has a very particular style of assassination: all of his jobs are completed by making it look like the target was killed simply by accident… Hence the name Accident Man.

"We're here to make bank robberies great again!" Platinum Pictures has revealed an official trailer + UK release date for this British crime thriller titled The Last Heist, from filmmaker Coz Greenop. It's now set to open theatrical in November in the UK, though still has no US release yet. When the stakes are this high is there really honour amongst thieves, and how far will this four go to protect each other, especially if the main threat seems to come from within the group? The Last Heist is inspired by true stories, real events and real people (with names changed to protect the not-so-innocent). The Last Heist is a witty, gritty, thrilling insight into the real south London criminal underworld - a look at real villains' psyche and ongoing volatile relationships. The Last Heist stars genre veteran Terry Stone, best known as Tony Tucker from Rise of the Footsoldier films,...

"There's a gaggle of assassins about to turn up!" Goldwyn Films has revealed the official US trailer for an action comedy sequel titled Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday. It's the second movie after the original Accident Man in 2018, directed by Jesse V. Johnson, bringing back Adkins as the "accident man" in the title. Scott Adkins returns as Mike Fallon, a tough hitman who makes his hits look like accidents or suicide. The Accident Man is back again and this time he must fight all the top assassins to protect the ungrateful son of a mafia boss, save the life of his only friend, and rekindle his relationship with his maniacal father figure. Sounds wild! In addition to Adkins, the cast includes Ray Stevenson, Perry Benson, Sarah Chang, Flaminia Cinque, Faisal Mohammed, Peter Lee Thomas, and Beau Fowler as "Poco The Killer Clown". This does look ridiculous in a self-aware way, and...

I have only ever seen Quadrophenia once in my life and honestly I wasn’t that enamoured with the movie, I’m not exactly a fan of The Who and I am a child of the late 80s early 90s, so the whole scooters and Mod subculture is kind of lost on me to be completely honest… it was more of a thing that people’s dads were into! However I have seen enough movies or TV shows that have touched on the era (This is England for example) to know it was, and to many will always be, an important part of history.
Luckily though, this movie didn’t have to appeal to my nostalgia bone. I didn’t press play because I have a huge love of everything Mod.

As you’re no doubt well aware, comic book movies are all the rage these days. While we still get the odd dud, the genre continues going from strength to strength and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is at the forefront of that right now.
However, while we all know who characters like Captain America, Spider-Man, and The Hulk are from our childhoods, there are a lot of comic books out there you probably haven’t heard of. The question is, do you know which of your favourites movies are based on them?

This is the end of This Is England - and bringing his powerful working-class saga to a close would seem no mean feat for series mastermind Shane Meadows. Both the original movie and its TV spinoffs have been of a spectacularly high quality, Meadows' truthful scripts and the scarily authentic performances of the cast fostering our deep investment in the characters.
That said, last week's episode was a devastating outpouring of emotion that set the stage superbly for this grand finale, with Milky (Andrew Shim) plotting revenge on Combo (Stephen Graham) - the reformed thug who once viciously assaulted him.
In its final TV outing, This Is England finally addresses that brutal moment from the '03 film - something that until now it's always danced around. There's a feeling of coming full circle that permeates this finale from the off, Meadows opening with one last example of his trademark montage.

A British debut about a debt-laden burglar has a low-key charm but feels over-familiar
London Film School graduate Jules Bishop's debut rearranges the usual geezer plot mechanics into a makeshift urban fairytale, more Children's Film Foundation than Kidulthood. Theo Barklem-Biggs is the tracksuited drip coerced into burglary to settle his debts; Phil Davis the property's owner, possessed of an 18th-century blunderbuss and various tatty life lessons – and it's only Davis's unsentimental fleshing out of this whiskery, Steptoe-esque coot that saves the film from total familiarity. Boosted by colourful East End location work, i t exudes a certain low-key, pootling charm, but often gets sloppy: who casts Perry Benson as a middle-class snob?.

Film London announces Lilting, the latest project from Film London Microwave, will be distributed by Curzon Film World’s Artificial Eye in the UK with Protagonist Pictures to manage international sales. A striking feature debut from director Hong Khaou with an all-star cast led by Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Cloud Atlas) and Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Lilting explores love without a common language.
Written and directed by Khaou and produced by Dominic Buchanan, Lilting is the eighth film from the successful feature film fund Film London Microwave. Alongside Whishaw and Pei Pei, the film also stars Peter Bowles (Blow-Up, The Bank Job), Morven Christie (House of 9, The Young Victoria) and Andrew Leung (The List).
As part of Film London Microwave’s mentorship component, award-winning film-maker Michael Winterbottom acted as writer/director Khaou’s mentor, while producer Buchanan received guidance and support from his mentor Ken Marshall, the producer of London to Brighton, Filth and Song for Marion.
Curzon Film World’s Artificial Eye is known for its discerning taste in the best of European and world cinema. The label has released more winners of the Cannes Palme d'Or than any other UK distributor, with titles including The Class (2008) and The White Ribbon (2009).
Commercially-minded and creatively-spirited Protagonist Pictures is an international sales company committed to strong relationships with film-makers. Recent highlights in their catalogue include Searching for Sugar Man, Sightseers, The Imposter and Microwave’s Shifty. This year at Cannes they represent The Selfish Giant by Clio Barnard, screening in Directors’ Fortnight, and in the Critics’ Week, Paul Wright’s debut feature For Those In Peril.
Lilting tells the story of a Chinese mother (Pei Pei) as she grieves for her son (Leung) following his untimely death. He was her eyes and ears in the UK, their adopted country, and without him she is stranded. The only person left is his lover (Whishaw) – who she knows only as his flat mate. Together they are forced to overcome their differences and unite in sorrow whilst struggling against the absence of a shared language. An intimate and thoughtful film, Lilting addresses overcoming cultural and generational boundaries, the power of memory, and the lifelines and relationships formed in the face of grief.
Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, said: “Lilting is a moving cinematic achievement and I am delighted that it will reach UK audiences through Curzon Film World and that Protagonist will be managing international sales. It is a testament to Microwave’s innovative approach to film-making that its projects attract high-calibre talent and prestigious commercial distributors and sales agents. The scheme’s successful track record is also a result of the Microwave team, who are integral to nurturing and guiding all our film-makers. I am proud to see another Microwave feature proving itself in the commercial marketplace and hope this is only the start of Lilting’s success.”
Louisa Dent, Managing Director of Curzon Film World said: "When we read the script, it was clear that this was something special. There is an emotional urgency that is compelling and honest. Hong is a real emerging talent and his short films marked him out. We knew that the Microwave/Film London team would be great partners on this and with a quality cast it seemed liked a perfect fit for us.”
Mike Goodridge, CEO of Protagonist Pictures said: “I had admired Hong's shorts so it was with great excitement that I watched his first feature Lilting. But Hong exceeds expectations: the film is an accomplished and mature portrait of love and loss, graced by two extraordinary lead performances. The whole Protagonist team was knocked out by it and we are confident it will be embraced by distributors around the world.”
Funded by Film London Microwave, additional finance came from production companies Stink Films and Andy Brunskill’s recently launched Sums Film and Media Ltd., supported by financier/producer Bob & Co, Lim Kay Sui and Neo Swee Lin.
Film London Microwave is a unique training-through-production scheme delivered in partnership with BBC Films and with support from Creative Skillset. Challenging London-based film-makers to shoot a feature film for up to £120,000, Film London Microwave enables talent to thrive in a limited budget with its integrated training programme which offers crucial guidance and mentoring throughout the film-making process.
The Film London Microwave team is made up of Creative Producer Mia Bays, who also acts as the Distribution/Marketing Consultant and Mike Kelly, Business and Finance Producer, alongside Film London’s Talent Development Manager Kevin Dolan and Development and Production Officer Tessa Inkelaar. Film London will soon be appointing a new Head of Talent Development and Production, who will head up the Microwave team.
Encompassing training and development from script to screen and beyond, Film London Microwave has enjoyed excellent results. Last year saw the successful UK theatrical releases of Ben Drew’s iLL Manors, released by Revolver, and Frances Lea’s Strawberry Fields, released through Soda Pictures’ New British Cinema Quarterly programme.
Other films produced through the scheme include the BAFTA-nominated Shifty, award-winning horror Mum & Dad, documentary The British Guide to Showing Off, teen drama Freestyle and the yet to be release Borrowed Time which was awarded Best in Fest at the 2012 Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Following on from director Sara Sugarman’s unsatisfying teen flick Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, the filmmaker has returned to her roots somewhat, this time staying closer to home –as she presents Vinyl, not only shot in her hometown of Rhyl, Wales, but also telling the true story of a punk band’s great rock and roll swindle; a band she knows all too well (she dated the bassist, innit).
Based on the real life occurrences surrounding Mike Peters’ band The Alarm, we focus on Weapons of Happiness, a punk four piece who had enjoyed relative success in their prime, yet split up due to the greed and careless irresponsibility of frontman Johnny Jones (Phil Daniels). However when they are reunited for the first time in years at a funeral, Johnny and the other band members (Keith Allen, Perry Benson, Christopher Roy Turner) take a trip down memory lane and,...

Having made a slew of short films in recent years, and collaborated with Noah and the Whale on the immaculate The First Days of Spring, Parkville Pictures have recently been working with debut writer-director Jules Bishop on their first feature, Borrowed Time.
The film had an eighteen-day production back in the summer of 2011, with the help of Film London and the BBC Films Microwave scheme, shot for £120,000.
Fast forward a year, and the film had finally been completed, and now it’s ready for distribution. The path to distribution is of course an incredibly difficult one, especially for independent films like this one, and so Parkville have decided to become their own distributors, and raise the money for the task through Kickstarter.
Projects like these are becoming increasingly common – we’ve just recently seen the Kickstarter project for The Uncle Ruckus Movie, from The Boondocks creator, Andrew MacGruder – and they...

How different would Scarface be if Tony Montana had a lust for blood instead of coke? Or, what if a clan of vampires made their own crime family? Wouldn’t that be an awesome movie? Vampires and gangsters seem like a perfect match. They both enjoy secrecy, violence and power. How hard would it be to mix some blood and money into that equation? Maybe a little harder than you might think…

Following the recent conveyor belt of gritty and dramatic urban films, Anuvahood is a comedic coming of age story that adds a refreshing air of levity to the urban genre. Deacon brings together a strong ensemble cast of both rising and established British talent, including Femi Oyeniran (Kidulthood/Shank), Ollie Barbieri (Skins), Jazzie Zonzolo , Michael Vu, Richie Campbell (The Silence/The Firm), Linda Robson (Birds Of A Feather) and Jaime Winstone (Kidulthood/Made In Dagenham), with cameos from Ashley Walters (Bullet Boy/Dead Man Running), Perry Benson...

You know, several times a day we think about how cool it would be to open up shop across the pond so that we could easily be there for all of the great shit they have going on. Film4 Frightfest, great Blu-ray editions we get the shaft on here, the seductive usage of the word "randy" ... so very much to love. Now, to further make us drool, The Horror Channel UK (yes, they have one of those there, too) is churning out another dosage of fright to get fans watching the carnage, Cruel Britannia.

The Horror Channel is to celebrate the best of contemporary British horror with Cruel Britannia – a special season of UK TV premieres which showcases some of the finest home-grown directorial talent around.
Kick-starting the season on Friday 8th April is the UK TV premiere of Steven Sheil’s debut feature Mum & Dad – a film described as “one of the defining British horrors of its generation”. Imbued with a terrifying ferocity, it centres around a young Polish immigrant (Holby City’s Olga Fedori) who finds herself imprisoned in a suburban House of Horrors. It also stars Perry Benson (This Is England, Somers Town).
This is followed by the UK TV premiere of Gerard Johnson’s debut, the dark, brutal and bleakly amusing Tony: London Serial Killer, transmitting on Friday 15th April. It has drawn favourable comparisons to John McNaughton’s seminal Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and features a star-making...

Bob Hoskins is one of the many talented stars of this fall's Made in Dagenham, which has gotten disappointingly little Oscar buzz given its stellar cast and generally heartwarming story. Hoskins plays an auto plant manager who helps the women there go on strike, but he's apparently not done telling stories about labor issues. According to THR he'll play a role in Weighed In: The Story of the Mumper, centered around the 1980s strike by British newspaper workers. No, I have no idea what a mumper is, though it seems fair to assume there's some British slang involved in creating that word. Joining Hoskins will be Jenny Agutter and Emily Atack, with Calum McNab, Adam Deacon, Vincent Regan, Terry Stone and Perry Benson all on board already for director Sacha Bennett. Yes, this may be the most obscurely British story in the world to tell, but i would have said...

When talking about British Film there are certain, unavoidable, assumptions one automatically makes. Those crisply enunciated words have long conjured pictures of rolling hills, heaving bosoms, mad Kings and foppish fools. An entire industry has been built upon the ever changing hair of Mr Hugh Grant and Jane Austen’s back catalogue has been taken advantage of in the parlour time and time again.
It is a world apart from those reliable old exports that we may find the Britain of gangster flicks. They populate a straight-to-dvd nether world which has scant regard for global recognition. It is a world apart from those reliable old exports that we may find the Britain of gangster flicks. They populate a straight-to-dvd nether world which has scant regard for global recognition. Somers Town (2008) Direction: Shane Meadows Screenplay: Shane Meadows, Paul Fraser Cast: Thomas Turgoose, Piotr Jagiello, Elisa Lasowski, Kate Dickie, Ireneusz Czop, Perry Benson Thomas Turgoose, Piotr Jagiello in Somers Town The happenstance friendship central to Shane Meadows’ Somers Town buds within a small black-and-white world, an environment populated with aesthetic lines, distinct or unseen, that stretch retrograde towards an urban horizon. Convergence is not merely suggested through contrast and forms, but is realized as ubiquitous in the neighborhood around the film’s young men. A district of London in the shadows of St. Pancras railway station, Somers Town is at a point of transition. New construction and redevelopment abut decades-old council flats and working-class cafes. Rather than lament gentrified encroachment and its broad [...]...

[Editor's Note: Mum & Dad drops on R1 DVD tomorrow (May 5, 2009)]
The anonymous interzone of London's Heathrow airport and its surrounds is the setting for British horror movie Mum & Dad, a claustrophobic and intense film that follows a murderous middle-aged couple (based loosely on English serial killers Fred and Rosemarie West) who sell stolen cargo from the airport and take advantage of its transient population to fulfill their psychopathic desires. Despite being very much a part of the contemporary torture porn genre with its focus on drawn-out ordeal, Mum & Dad is unusual enough, and British enough, to stand out from the crowd.
It's Britishness is in its kitchen sink style, borrowed in part from modern directors like Mike Leigh and Shane Meadows but a continuation of a rich heritage that goes back to the 1960s, coming across in part in its slow-paced,...

Foreign Objects travels the world of international cinema each week to look for films worth visiting. So renew your passport, get your shots, and brush up on the local age of legal consent, this week we’re heading to… the UK! I get flack sometimes for including British movies under a foreign film heading due to the fact that they're still in English. This would make sense if the column specified foreign language, but since it doesn't I'm going to continue including English language films produced in a country more than 3000 miles away. Besides, if I stopped covering British films you may have gone your entire life without seeing the image above. We'll get to what exactly it is in a minute... Lena (Olga Fedori) is a Polish immigrant who makes a meager living cleaning toilet stalls in London's Heathrow Airport. She hopes to eventually afford to move other members of her family in with her, but...

Mum & Dad and their “adopted children” are your typical horror-film family. They torture, they kill and they see nothing wrong with watching Dad use severed body parts to pleasure himself—but they still celebrate Christmas.
Steven Sheil, writer/director of the new DVD release, explains in the disc’s extras that he wanted to create a British version of this genre staple, a task at which he certainly succeeds. Olga Fedori (of the upcoming The Wolfman remake) is Lena, a young woman from Poland who gets a job on the cleaning staff of London’s Heathrow Airport. An adorable-but-strange co-worker named Birdie (Ainsley Howard) seems to take a liking to Lena and introduces her to her mute “brother” Elbie (Toby Alexander). When Lena misses the bus one night, Birdie invites her over.
As one might expect, accepting that invitation was not a good idea. Lena is very quickly and intimately...

Partly inspired by the grisly, real-life exploits of serial killers Fred and Rosemary West, and starring Shane Meadows regular Perry Benson (Somers Town; This Is England), the film puts a unique spin on the British horror genre, setting its tale very close to home (quite literally) and resulting in a brutally realistic horror story.
Directed by Steven Sheil and co-starring Dido Miles, Olga Fedori, Toby Alexander and newcomer Ainsley Howard, this boundary-pushing journey into suburban terror is not without its moments of dark humour, but, viewers be warned, Mum & Dad is definitely not a film for the squeamish or the easily offended.

A fair amount of critical praise if following Steven Sheil's horror movie Mum & Dad , a nasty looking bit of work opening in the UK on the 26th of this month. Revolver Entertainment is bringing the film Stateside, we're told, on May 9th but you can catch a sneak peek now via five film clips residing in our film database here . And yes, this does look a lil' warped (see the censored clip, too). Perry Benson and Dido Miles play the titular couple who live with "adopted" children and survive off whatever their can grab at the airport they're employed at. The film picks up when they kidnap an office cleaner and pull the poor gal into their world of depravity. Sounds a tad People Under the Stairs -ish but take a look at the clips and decide for yourself.

Director: Steven Sheil. Review by: Pete Higgins...Mum and Dad’s opening title sequence, all jet planes and barbed wire fences, sets the film up as some kind of social-realist, state-of-the-nation, kitchen-sink mini epic. Which it sort of is. But it is also a visceral, nightmarish horror film which seizes on the blandness and anonymity of certain aspects of 21st century Britain and twists them into something utterly unforgettable. It’s all very Shane Meadows, right down to the casting of Meadows regular Perry Benson in the role of “Dad”. This particular actor is never going to be the next James Bond, but it’s to be hoped that he one day gets to play people who aren’t completely scuzzy and grubby and just plain revolting. Meanwhile, here he is, being all those things, and more.....

In an industry first Revolver Entertainment’s shocker Mum and Dad will be the first ever UK film release to appear in cinemas at the same time as being available on retail DVD. Hailed as one of the most disturbing Brit-horror emerge in recent years, writer-director Steven Sheil’s Mum and Dad was partly inspired by the grisly, real-life exploits of serial killers Fred and Rosemary West. Starring Shane Meadows regular Perry Benson (Somers Town; This Is England), the film puts a new spin on the British horror genre, setting its tale very close to home (quite literally) and resulting in a brutally realistic horror story. Twitch first posted a trailer (below the break) for this Brit horror from director Steven Sheil back in July, and since then it seems to have gathered momentum; well received at Frightfest in August and now slated for a 26th December Boxing Day release in the UK.
Mum and Dad comes across as a hybrid of TV’s The Royale Family and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which is no bad thing – I never quite warmed to the comedy of Ricky Tomlinson and his offspring, so it’s great to see it subverted like this. Particularly with Shane Meadows favourite, Perry Benson, involved as a psychotic Dad.
Revolver Entertainment have taken a novel step in releasing the film day-on-date across multiple platforms; DVD, cinema, video-on-demand, electronic sell through and rental. It’s the first time a strategy like this has been employed in the UK, and a similar one is planned...

The UK Frightfest is at it again, this time they've scored your first look at stills from Mum & Dad, a film we first told you about here. Inside you'll find a much longer synopsis, along with the stills from the Steven Sheil directed UK horror pic starring Dido Miles, Perry Benson, Olga Fedori, Ainsley Howard and Toby Alexander. You dont have to go to Texas for a deranged cannibal family. Try Heathrow Airport closer to home. Thats where Terminal cleaner Lena is stranded after night shift and accepts help from perky colleague Birdie who lives nearby with her parents. But her home turns out to be the worst House of Horrors.

Edinburgh International Film Festival
Seldom can such a fine feature-film have had such an unlikely genesis as the wonderful coming-of-age comedy-drama "Somers Town", initially commissioned as a 20-minute short by train company Eurostar to publicize their high-speed London-to-Paris connection. Hats off to the organization for allowing director Shane Meadows and writer Paul Fraser to organically develop this seed into a proper movie, one which confirms Meadows as among the most accomplished -- and now, after a couple of early-career hiccups, consistent -- British film-makers under 40. While unlikely to repeat the commercial success of Meadows' last effort, skinhead saga "This Is England", "Somers Town" is just the kind of heartfelt, superbly-observed miniature that will attract passionate admirers wherever it's shown.
Crucial to the film's success are the terrific central performances by Thomas Turgoose (youthful star of "This Is England") and newcomer Piotr Jagiello as Tomo and Marek, both around 16, who end up in the same scruffy corner of north London for wildly divergent reasons. Scrappy, diminutive Tomo has fled his native north-Midlands and a deeply problematic home life, which he's reluctant to discuss; lanky photography-nut Marek has arrived with his hard-drinking father, who's found accommodation in Somers Town while he working on the Eurostar rail-link at nearby King's Cross. After initial friction, the pair rapidly become best pals and rivals for the affections of French waitress Maria (Elisa Lasowski.)
Shot on monochrome HD, "Somers Town" doesn't appear much at first glance. The situations depicted are decidedly undramatic, chronicling the kinds of things youngsters get up to in the summer when they have time on their hands and limited cash. But we soon realize that while the script relies on vivid humor, it manages to do so while unobtrusively reminding us of these eminently believable characters' difficult perhaps even tragic circumstances and backstories.
Meadows and cinematographer Natasha Braier present their story with a gritty, unfussy lyricism that finds unexpected glimpses of beauty in overlooked corners of London. Though black-and-white for most of its running time, there's an unexpected, colorful coda which ends proceedings on a truly joyous note by which point you may find this deceptively slight little picture has, on the sly, built quite an emotional wallop.
Production companies: Tomboy Films / Big Arty / Eurostar. Cast: Thomas Turgoose, Piotr Jagiello, Elisa Lasowski, Ireneusz Crop, Perry Benson. Director: Shane Meadows. Screenwriter: Paul Fraser. Executive producers: Greg Nugent, Nick Mercer, Robert Saville. Producer: Barnaby Spurrier. Director of photography: Natasha Braier. Production designer: Lisa Marie Hall. Music: Gavin Clarke.
