Chicago – I could be wrong, but my love for the 1986 original and the lack of critic screenings for the remake opening today leads me to feel confident in saying that the DVD of the original “The Stepfather,” available on the format for the first time this week, is the way to go this weekend if you’re looking for a nasty slice of domestic terror.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0
Clever, well-made, wonderfully performed, and simply thrilling, “The Stepfather” is one of the best movies of its kind of the ’80s. Even if you do journey out to see the remake, make sure you catch up with the original too.
The Stepfather was released on DVD on October 13th, 2009.

Shout! Factory gave Fango the scoop that it will release a special-edition DVD of the 1977 nature-run-amok cult favorite Kingdom Of The Spiders next year. The company also sent along final details on its disc of the original Stepfather, which we first told you about here.

It's amazing how now that DVD is waning in popularity, thereby giving way to Blu-ray, how many movies we've been wanting forever are making the digital jump. Next up to the plate -- The Stepfather.
Fangoria got word today that Joseph Ruben’s 1987 Terry O'Quinn classic The Stepfather will be coming our way on October 13th courtesy of the good folks at Shout Factory!
Special features are set to include an audio commentary by and interviews with producer Jay Benson and actress Jill Schoelen (who plays the stepdaughter), plus more to be announced. Dig on the artwork below.

One of the most-wanted classic horror films on DVD finally makes its U.S. disc debut as Shout! Factory brings Joseph Ruben’s 1987 psychochiller The Stepfather to disc this fall. The company gave Fango the first word about the content and also a look at the cover art, which you can see below.
Starring Terry O’Quinn in a career-launching role as a man obsessed with heading the perfect family who marries into fatherless families—only to kill them when they don’t live up to his standards, The Stepfather will street October 13 to tie in to the theatrical release of the remake (see the rather unpromising trailer for that movie here). The DVD will feature a new high-definition widescreen transfer and include a number of special features, including audio commentary by and interviews with producer Jay Benson and actress Jill Schoelen (who plays the villain’s suspicious stepdaughter), plus more to be announced.
