A stage adaptation of The Pianist, based on the Władysław Szpilman memoir that was the source of the Oscar-nominated 2002 film, is being developed by director Emily Mann with an eye toward Broadway. An industry reading is set for New York City this month with Tony Award winner Santino Fontana (Tootsie) starring as Szpilman.
The project was announced today by producers Robin de Levita Productions, Gorgeous Entertainment, and Wolk Transfer Company. Described as a play with music, The Pianist features an original score by Dutch concert pianist Iris Hond.
The invitation-only industry reading is set for June 23, with Fontana leading a company that includes Richard Topol, Georgia Warner, Claire Beckman, Arielle Goldman, Paul Spera, Addison Finley, Jordan Lage, Robert David Grant and Tina Benko.

The editors behind Nitram, I Met A Girl, The Furnace and June Again will compete for this year’s Ellie Award for Best Editing in Feature Drama, while the television drama category will be a contest between those who cut Wakefield, The Tailings, Jack Irish, Eden and Bump.
The annual awards of the Australian Screen Editors (Ase) will be held in early February with the hope that travel restrictions between states will have eased.
“It’s been a tough two years and we think we all deserve to be together in person to celebrate these fine achievements in editing, and the results of everybody’s hard work during such difficult times,” Ase president Danielle Boesenberg tells If.
In addition to the feature film prize, I Met A Girl editor Melanie Annan will also be in contention for Best Editing in Documentary and Series for Three Songs for Benazir, shared with Christoph Wermke.

"The most important thing was to have interests in other things besides watching the TV." Who the heck is Mark Bennett? Good question! Let's find out... Before TV binging was our collective reality, Mark Bennett obsessively memorized every detail in the 1950s television shows of his childhood. "These idyllic imaginary worlds were an escape from his isolated life filled with traumatic memories and became the source of his art. But when fame surprisingly found Mark, the dangers of living deeply within fantasy emerged." The Grass is Always Greener on TV is a short documentary film made by filmmaker Matt Pizzano that takes us through Bennett's story - the good and the bad. This is an impressive short film that is built up with so much fascinating footage. But it's also a tragic, heartbreaking, frustrating story of a lonely man trying too hard to live a life just like the one he saw on TV.
