NATPE, which recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, has decided to cancel its annual January conference.
Held for more than a decade in Miami, and before that in a rotation of cities like New Orleans and Las Vegas, the January confab next year was set to unfold at the Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas. While the locale was well off the beaten path for an industry trade show, it was chosen due to the onerous economics of putting on a conference at Miami’s Fontainebleau Hotel and the neighboring Eden Roc.
Covid wiped out the 2021 and 2022 editions of the January event and put NATPE on its back foot financially. The plug was pulled in January 2022 just days before the scheduled start, as the Omicron variant forced the Sundance Film Festival and other industry happenings to go virtual or dark.

John Wick prequel series The Continental is on the move. The series is moving from Starz to NBCU streamer Peacock.
The unusual move comes more than four years after the project was first unveiled by the premium cable network. Sources have told Deadline that the three-part action event series is more of a natural fit for Peacock, which recently acquired the rights to the John Wick movies, and comes as Starz has repositioned its brand over the last few years to focus more on female skewing series such as Outlander and series that fit specific demographics such as the Power franchise.
It is not part of a wholesale move to move projects elsewhere ahead of Lionsgate’s pending deal to sell the cable network, as an announcement could come next month. Starz is not expected to have a second window.

Amidst lower-than-expected subscriber growth and a subsequent round of circa-150 redundancies, Netflix was all anyone wanted to talk about at this week’s Banff World Media Festival, and while the streamer’s head honchos stressed business as usual, sources from outside reported confusing messaging coming from Los Gatos HQ.
A series of panels and keynotes featuring Netflix, including one from Head of Global TV Bela Bajaria, were held for its execs to stress to the 1,500-strong delegate list of commissioners, execs and journalists that the streamer is still doing what they believe it has always done: commissioning the best producers, writers and directors to make the best shows.
“Back to basics” was the message from Bajaria, who shrugged off the need for “radical change” within the streamer’s ranks. More junior staffers were also pushing the Bau line in private, arguing that now is the time to cut through the...

The moody mountainscape surrounding the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel may have been tailor-made for the British Columbia-shot thriller “Yellowjackets,” which was honored at this week’s Banff World Media Festival, but the real survival drama was raging between Canadian broadcasters and the streaming giants.
The tension was palpable among the country’s legacy broadcasters and the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, both of which were prominent at the 43rd edition of the festival. While this fraught dynamic — which has ramped up as the digital platforms launch originals divisions in Canada — is nothing new, relations are coming to a head as the much-ballyhooed Bill C-11, the proposed update to Canada’s dated Broadcasting Act, is fiercely debated in Parliament.

Speaking to Deadline in a wide-ranging interview at Banff, where he is Chair of the Board of Directors, Beggs hinted at what’s to come once the deal for a minority stake in London and LA-based management and production firm 42 officially completes in the coming weeks.

YouTube global head of original content Susanne Daniels offers peek into early content strategy at Banff Connect La.
Paid content on YouTube Red made by a YouTube creator can boost the creator’s free channel subscriptions by at least 25%, according to early evidence.
The finding emerged during an on-stage conversation between YouTube global head of original content Susanne Daniels and Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs at Banff Connect La on Tuesday.
Eighteen months into her role Daniels remains committed to turning YouTube into a major platform for scripted content and has adopted a strategy of posting the first episode of a series on YouTube Red on YouTube for free and posting free ancillary content to drive eyeballs to paid material.
The results, she said, fly in the face of the fears of YouTube creators that a pay channel could them lose subscribers.

Lionsgate has revealed details at last as to how it plans to round off the Divergent series...
Speaking at the TCA summer press tour, Lionsgate finally gave some more details about its plans for its Divergent TV movie — which actually sounds a lot more like a TV show than a TV movie.
According to Deadline, Lionsgate Television Group Chairman Kevin Beggs said the media company is looking at "resolving the novel in a season across 10 to 13 episodes and then expanding from there into multiple seasons." This sounds like, rather than a TV movie with a subsequent television show spinoff, the second half of the final novel will be told in a TV show that will potentially continue on past the ending of the book.
This is particularly interesting within the context of the story given that those who have read the ending of the series know that...

Diminishing box office returns and lowly reviews may have scrawled the writing on the wall early on, but it’s fair to say that Lionsgate surprised just about everyone when it confirmed plans to shift The Divergent Series onto the small-screen for its two-tier finale – including the stars at the heart of the sci-fi franchise, it seems.
Once on course to bring the curtain down on June 9, 2017, Ascendant has now been repackaged into a TV movie, one that will seemingly spawn a spinoff series comprised of 10-t0-13 episodes.
It’s a revised approach that Lionsgate is bullish about, too, after the company’s Kevin Beggs told Variety that there is still “a tremendous fandom,” for The Divergent Series, before outlining plans to spin out “the [final] novel in a season across 10 to 13 episodes and then expanding from there into multiple seasons.”
Beggs then goes on to claim that multiple buyers...
