Before returning to the silver screen for Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, Johnny Depp is ready to announce his first directorial effort in 25 years for Modi, a biopic focusing on the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Inspired by a play by Dennis McIntyre and adapted for Hollywood by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, Modi tells the story of the famous painter and sculptor during his time in Paris in 1916.
Riccardo Scamarcio (John Wick: Chapter 2), Pierre Niney (Yves Saint Laurent), and Al Pacino lead the cast, with filming going down in Budapest this fall. The Veterans will bring the project to Cannes for a potential sale.
According to Deadline, Modi chronicles a harrowing 48 hours of Amedeo Modigliani’s life, depicting when he ran from police through the streets and watering holes of war-torn Paris. Bohemians think nothing of Modigliani ending his career prematurely, including French artist Maurice Utrillo, the Belarusian-born Chaim Soutine, and his English muse and lover,...

David Horowitz, the News Emmy-winning reporter and longtime consumer advocate who was involved in one of the most infamous live-tv events in Los Angeles history, has died. He was 81. A family spokesman said the Fight Back! host died Thursday in Los Angeles of dementia-related complications.
Horowitz was a reporter for NBC during the Vietnam War and opened the network’s first Saigon bureau. He later was the only newsman to be live on the air in the immediate aftermath of the 1971 Sylmar earthquake. A fixture on Knbc-tv newscasts for nearly 20 years, he moved to rival Kcbs in 1993. It was during his stint on the NBC affiliate that a disturbed man pulled a “gun” on Horowitz during a live segment.
With the weapon — which later was revealed to be a Bb pistol but looked very real — held at his back, Horowitz was forced to read a rambling manifesto. Horowitz began to engage the man,...

SAG Awards 2014 winners: Lupita Nyong’o surprises, shoo-in Cate Blanchett doesn’t (photo: Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o in ’12 Years a Slave’) The 2014 SAG Awards ceremony was held at downtown Los Angeles’ Shrine Exposition Center earlier this evening, January 18. Presenters included Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Josh Holloway, Clark Gregg, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Mindy Kaling, and Pauley Perrette, in addition to about a couple of dozen nominees. Most of the winners — including those in the television categories — were the expected ones, e.g., Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad, Best Actor Oscar winner Michael Douglas (Wall Street, 1987) for his portrayal of Liberace in Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra, Jared Leto for Jean-Marc Vallée’s Dallas Buyers Club, two-time Oscar winner Maggie Smith (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, 1969; California Suite, 1978) for Downton Abbey, and Best Actress Oscar winner Helen Mirren (The Queen, 2006) for Phil Spector. The award season is now in full swing. This morning, SAG-aftra announced the nominees for the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Nominations and wins at these awards often add to one’s Oscar hopes, so it’s always interesting to see which projects are getting the most attention.
One neat personal note here is that, since I’ve been a card-carrying member of the Screen Actors Guild for 7 years, I get to cast my votes on all of these. Looking forward to that.
And the nominees are…

This article contains spoilers for the fourth season of Arrested Development.
It was always going to divide opinion. Let's face it, classic sitcoms aren't revived every day, and the build-up to Arrested Development's return from TV limbo fostered ridiculously high expectations. No showrunner could ever hope to please all of the fans, all of the time. Unsurprisingly, reviews have been mixed. Some praised the continuing audacity of Ad's plotting, the multi-layered references and the depth of the characterisation. Others criticised the immoderate length of some episodes, while lamenting the absence of several key cast members for long stretches.
Yet for all that, Arrested Development's fourth season was perhaps its most accomplished to date. Okay, some elements didn't quite work. Yes, the longer episode length proved to be problematic.

John Beard was the news anchor at Fox's Los Angeles station, Kttv, in 2003 when "Arrested Development" producers tried to recruit him to appear on the sitcom. At first Beard passed, but then, he says, "They explained they wanted me to play myself and that the writers appreciated my sense of humor. I thought it was one of the funniest things I had ever read. I couldn't turn it down."...

When you binge watch a television show, it’s easy to miss things or get episodes muddled when you think back. Mitch Hurwitz was appealing to fans not to binge on Season 4 of Arrested Development before it debuted, but guess what, a whole bunch of people went and did it anyway. I was one of them. I couldn’t resist. I didn’t sit down and watch them in one eight and a half hour batch, but I did work my way through all 15 in less that a day. In some ways, though, a series like this lends itself to binge viewing. The complexity of the narrative is a lot easier to follow when you watch the episodes in quick succession. There’s no danger of losing your place or forgetting certain events when you’re blasting through them in one after another, and a weaker episode can be quickly...

If you’ve ever read any of my previous blatherings about television, you’d know that one of my favorite things is when a comedy has an emotional element that draws you in.
Whether it be through the actual storyline or through the growth and advancement of the character alone, if you make me emotionally invested, I will likely remain watching and tell everyone I know all about it. Such was the case with this episode of Arrested Development.
"Smashed" provided a great example of this as Tobias Funke becomes less of a caricature and more of a character. This is Tobias’ arrested development.
When we last saw Tobias he’d run into a bit of trouble with the law thanks to one John Beard and his show To Catch a Local Predator. Thanks to a brief prison stay he takes Lucille 2 up on her offer to be a therapist...

Nothing says "Happy Friday," quite like hemorrhoid costumes... right, Arrested Development Fanatics?
The various storylines on Arrested Development are starting to come together as we follow Tobias to India just like he followed Lindsay. And there's the hemorrhroid and his appearance on To Catch A Local Predator. Hosted by John Beard, of course.
"A New Start" is Tobias’s arrested development. I hope you’re ready for the return of the analrapist.
After unintentionally reading Eat, Pray, Love right after Lindsay, packing an identical suitcase, cutting off her cab on the way to the airport and sitting behind her on the plane, Tobias takes the same passage to India as his estranged wife.
Of course he spends his two weeks in India in the City of Hopelessness Hospital after being hit by the bus Lindsay was riding. Then we’re back to filling in gaps in Lindsay’s episode. The puzzle pieces fit together nicely,...

Of all Arrested Development’s main characters, George Sr. is probably the one you’d imagine would be least likely to be able to carry his own individual episode. It’s not that he’s not a great character, and Jeffrey Tambor is a supremely talented comedic actor who’s great as the Bluth family patriarch. It’s just that he always seemed to work best when existing as part of a scene, rather than having to do the heavy lifting. The likes of Buster, Tobias, Gob or even Lucille could come in and steal a scene, but George Sr. was a character who always worked best just being another funny part of it. Maybe it’s something to do with his eccentricities not being quite as pronounced as those other characters, while at the same time he’s not quite as grounded as a Michael, George Michael or Maeby.

On Sunday, after a wait of seven years, three months and 16 days no less, Arrested Development finally returned with a fourth season of 15 episodes. Debuting on Netflix in one batch, there was approximately 8 hours and 20 minutes of new footage for fans to consume, and many (myself included, I must admit) blasted through it all in just one day. Opinions were formed, knees were jerked and early assessments seemed to be fairly wide-ranging. The initial plan was for HeyUGuys to review the entirety of Season 4 in one fell swoop, but given how much the episodes seem to differ both in tone and quality throughout the season, we thought we’d instead go for a spoiler-filled episode-by-episode approach. So let’s jump into it, shall we, with the Michael-centric episode, Flight of the Phoenix.
And with that immediately we’ve touched on one of the main points of contention regarding these new episodes – their character-centric approach.

It's Day 3 of our 15 Days of Arrested Development here at TV Fanatic! In the latest episode, Lindsay is in India, wondering what is real. No, seriously, she wants to know if that handbag is real.
Yes, "Indian Takers" is Lindsay’s arrested development.
Before I can even begin this review, we need to talk about Portia De Rossi’s face. I’m not judging. I’m not criticizing. I’m not even going to speculate on what she had done. But I cannot be the only person who sees that, right?
It’s distracting and I feel like it could have easily been written into the plot as some sort of crazy treatment Lindsay Bluth had done and I would have gotten over it instantly and moved on. There is just no way Lucille wouldn’t have something to say about her daughter’s forehead that never moves and not...

Vulture is doing fifteen immediate recaps for hardcore Arrested Development fans. Five regular Vulture writers will write on three episodes each. More in-depth analyses of the new episodes will appear in the coming weeks. Last we left Tobias, his never-ending unintentional creepiness landed him on John Beard’s To Entrap a Local Predator. Now Tobias is working at Lucille 2’s Austerity, a rehab clinic attended by pop sensation Mark Cherry as well as by Tobias’s recent fling, DeBrie. Tobias’s latest prison stint has finally taught him the exact right way to combine the words analyst and therapist. Ron Howard’s “we don't have to hear this again” during the Tobias catch-up clip is a great wink at the fact this is on Netflix and we can rewind and come back in less than a minute if we feel the need to catch ourselves up.Argyle Austero, played by...

Fans of Fox's Arrested Development sitcom have been on a roller coaster ride for well over a year. Is the movie happening or isn't it?
Arrested Development follows the dysfunctional Bluth family and features the talents of actors Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Ron Howard, Henry Winkler, John F. Beard, and Mae Whitman. Despite critical acclaim, the series never caught on with a big audience.
Almost immediately following the show's cancellation, rumors of a reunion movie started to surface. The project started to pick up steam in late 2008. Supposedly, series creator Mitch Hurwitz got a greenlight and the cast all said they'd like to do it. That was more than a year ago and there's been little word since.

After months and months of speculation about an Arrested Development movie, it was announced a few weeks ago that it will actually happen. Movies based on TV shows have become commonplace but it's extremely rare for a show's original cast to make the transition. With that in mind, is it realistic to expect that movie plans won't get derailed and that the Bluths will really return?

Though the Arrested Development TV show was cancelled after three seasons, the Bluths are going to the big screen. Is this good news for other cult-favorites like Pushing Daisies and Veronica Mars?
Arrested Development centers around the wealthy Bluth family. At the center is widower Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), who becomes the family business' CEO when his father, George Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor), is jailed. Michael tries to raise his son, George Michael (Michael Cera), while dealing with his eccentric clan's antics. The family includes manipulative mother Lucille (Jessica Walter), socially inept Byron "Buster" (Tony Hale), delusional George Oscar "Gob" (Will Arnett), adopted sister Lindsay (Portia de Rossi), her husband Tobias (David Cross), and their attention-starved daughter, Mae "Maeby" (Alia Shawkat). The series' narrated by Ron Howard and also features actors like Henry Winkler, John F. Beard, Mae Whitman, B.W. Gonzalez, Justin Lee, Liza Minnelli, Judy Greer, and Justin Grant Wade.
