There are certain films I saw growing up that left me forever scarred: "The Neverending Story," "Watership Down," and "The Last Unicorn," to name the most memorable. However, I loved "The Last Unicorn" so much that it didn't matter that I felt inexplicably saddened by watching it. Much like "Watership Down" — also not meant for children — the 1982 film was watched by a generation of kids because it was animated. Naturally, that meant it was safe for children, right? Interestingly, the film, which just turned 40, wasn't originally intended for kids at all.
For one thing, the movie is scary. Not just obvious terrors like the monstrous Red Bull, but something even more frightening to children: being smothered by the ample bosom of a living tree — if you know, you know. The film was gorgeously animated by Rankin/Bass, the team that brought us the 1977 version of "The Hobbit." The screenplay was penned by Peter S. Beagle,...

"The Last Unicorn," which just turned 40, is a wild ride! It's a delightfully weird film, strange in a way that movies for children just aren't anymore. Perhaps that's because each generation seems more careful with their kids than the last. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I learned a lot from "The Last Unicorn." While some of its lessons may have been over my head at the time, I still think newer kids' films could stand to take a page or two from its book.
With a screenplay by Peter S. Beagle, based on his novel of the same name, "The Last Unicorn" hit theaters in 1982. The reason it makes such a strange children's movie is probably because it wasn't initially intended for children at all. However, that hasn't stopped a generation of kids from falling in love with the unicorn's story. Let's look at some of the weirder...

"The Last Unicorn" was my favorite movie as a kid. I watched it over and over, never tiring of that gorgeous animation, the America soundtrack, or the strange sense of sadness I couldn't seem to shake after the credits rolled. It was weird, wonderful, and unlike anything else I had ever seen. How often I watch it may have diminished over time, but I never actually stopped. In fact, I'd say I put it on at least once every couple of years. The movie turns 40 this month and honestly, it still holds up.
Based on Peter S. Beagle's novel of the same name -- he also wrote the screenplay -- "The Last Unicorn" tells the story of the titular creature, who goes off in search of what happened to the rest of her kind. Along the way, she encounters friends, foes, and everything in between.

Peter S. Beagle's beloved fantasy novel "The Last Unicorn" was highly sought after for animated film adaptations almost immediately upon publication, but it wasn't until 1982 that Rankin/Bass and Topcraft animation in Japan teamed up to create the acclaimed animated film. Thanks to a post from the author's Beagleverse website, "The Last Unicorn" is currently being adapted to a stage musical with Fergie contributing, and a live-action film.
First published in 1968, "The Last Unicorn" tells the story of the supposed last unicorn after the malevolent Red Bull herded unicorns to the ends of the Earth. She sets out on a journey...

"The Last Unicorn" was my favorite film as a child and honestly, remains in my top five even as an adult. The 1982 underrated animated classic is unlike anything that has come before or since. Based on Peter S. Beagle's 1968 novel of the same name (he also wrote the screenplay), the story follows the titular unicorn (voiced by Mia Farrow) as she searches the world for others like her, after hearing she is the last. Along the way, she is kidnapped by the villainous Mommy Fortuna (Angela Lansbury), befriends Schmendrick the magician (Alan Arkin) and Molly Grue (Tammy Grimes), and must contend with the terrifying...

This animated tale of star-crossed lovers features two wolves taken from their national park by rangers to help repopulate another site. Alpha-daughter Kate is determined to get back home, where she’s supposed to marry another alpha; Humphrey, an omega wolf, puts aside his unrequited love for Kate to help her in her quest. From torturous, crude surgeons to urban legends of the Black Eyed Kids, Screamfest 2015 yet again un-vaulted a flurry of diabolic short horror films at its recent 15th annual fright festival in Hollywood, California. But if there was one piece of work that teemed with terror amongst this mausoleum of madness, it was Gabriel Olson‘s 14-minute film The Bridge Partner.
Unlike other shorts presented, The Bridge Partner relies on mannerism and emotion rather than conventional gore and guts to bring about squirms, a true “classroom” for today’s young filmmaker in tapping into the more psychological approach to horror that has given rise to such padded-cell classics as Psycho, Silence Of The Lambs, and Misery.

Fans of legendary authors H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury and Robert E. Howard are no doubt familiar with the classic genre magazine Weird Tales, which launched the writing careers of those and countless other literary legends. Founded in 1923, the magazine became an icon of the genre and inspired many of its readers to take up writing themselves – including a young Stephen King, whose first exposure to Weird Tales came from issues once owned by his father. The original publication closed up shop back in 1954, and despite many attempts to revive it, Weird Tales remained mostly dormant until 1988, when it resurfaced in a different format and style than the original. Ownership has changed hands recently to Publisher John Harlacher and Editor-in-Chief Marvin Kaye, who vowed to take the magazine back to its roots. The newly-relaunched Weird Tales began appropriately enough with a Lovecraft theme focusing on Hpl's “Old Ones,” with original stories...

The movie adaptation of the 1968 novel The Last Unicorn in 1982 was one of the films of my childhood that stayed in heavy rotation. And if you’re like me you might have been a little disappointed at the quality of the copy you had until 2007 when a decent quality version was finally released. Now it has been restored and remastered and is about to go out on tour.
The tour kicks off this month on the 20th which coincides with the 74th birthday of the author, Peter S. Beagle. And if you live in the San Francisco area you can celebrate both the author’s birthday and the remastering of the movie with a special kick off party before the movie heads out on tour.

Like many children's films of its era, The Last Unicorn has spawned a fan-base that straddles the line between the cult and the nostalgic, occupying the center of a Venn diagram probably inseparable from either. Also like many of those films, it’s technically dodgy, filled with creepy images, and defined as a children's film only by the fact that its subject matter is either too illogical or nonsensical for adults. Unicorn was produced during the only period in our history when something like this could be produced (it also gave us Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and Legend), which explains, in a way, the affection that people have for it, as it seems to preserve not merely childhood memories, but an entirely mortal period of time when Hollywood placed its hope in fantasy film in a way that it really hasn’t before or since (Lord of the Rings is an arguable case,...

Children’s entertainment went fantasy-happy in the late ’70s and early ’80s, with Saturday-morning TV in particular glutted with swordsmen, sorcerers, and faraway lands. Upon its release in 1982, the animated feature The Last Unicorn got lost in the shuffle, but it’s become a cult favorite in the decades since, for a number of reasons. For genre fans, The Last Unicorn is notable because author Peter S. Beagle adapted his own popular 1968 novel, and made sure that his philosophical ruminations on myth, truth, and illusion remained integral to the plot. For animation fans, The Last Unicorn marks the ...

Chicago – History has a funny way of distorting the quality of a film. Don’t worry. I’m not here to tell you that “The Last Unicorn” only works through the haze of memory. It still features some striking visuals and reasonably strong storytelling, but it may not be the ’80s classic you conjure up when you hear a tune that reminds you of that cheesy theme song. The legions of adoring fans should definitely check this out but be prepared for what could be a let down.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
As I watched “The Last Unicorn” for the first time in decades, I couldn’t help wonder how I would feel about the movie it came out today. A lot of the “Lord of the Rings” inspired narrative comes off pretty damn cheesy in your mid-30s as opposed to pre-puberty. And the visuals fluctuate wildly. Sometimes the hand-drawn animation strikes a beautiful chord.

127 Hours (20th Century Fox) Harrowing true story of Aron Ralston (James Franco, in another fine turn), an extreme outdoorsman who finds himself trapped in a remote Utah canyon, his arm pinned between two boulders, with no help nearby, no communication to the outside world, and dim prospects for survival, to say the least. Director Danny Boyle manages to prove again that he’s one of the finest filmmakers working today by making a subject that is seemingly uncinematic a true example of pure cinema. Inventive, breathtaking, funny, and horrifying, often all at once. Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara make a memorable, brief appearance as hikers who connect with Ralston during his journey. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Boyle, producer Christian Colson, co-writer Simon Beaufoy; Deleted scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Certainly not the last of its kind, but the much loved fantasy tale from writer Peter S. Beagle arrives in high definition. The results are as breathtaking as the finished product and add a host of new special features to make you believe in magic again. Two hunters are passing through the forest of a Unicorn (voiced by Mia Farrow) and comment that she.s the last one left. The disbelieving unicorn asks a scatterbrained Butterfly (Robert Klein) if she is truly the last one. He eventually tells her that her brethren have been driven away by a ferocious, flaming Red Bull. The Unicorn leaves her forest to find out what happened to her kind. She discovers that...

"I got a call one day from Jeff Bridges, and he said, 'I understand you're doing 'The Last Unicorn,' and my friend Rene Auberjonois is in it. He's playing the Skull, and I want to be in it. Do you have anything for me?'" director Jules Bass reveals in the clip. "I said,...

The creators of Idw's Last Unicorn are appealing for donations to help fund the completion of the series. According to Bleeding Cool, issues #5 and #6 of the comic contain 26 and 29 pages respectively, but the publisher's internal budget only covers 22. Author Peter S. Beagle and his manager Connor Cochran have pledged to raise the additional $$3,000 (£1,800) required to complete the story themselves, and (more)...

Chicago – Last week we covered the highly anticipated Blu-ray release of “Lord of the Rings” and even had a chat with Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop about the Best Picture-winning film from director Peter Jackson. There may be a few fans of that series out there who don’t know that Jackson, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, and Ian McKellen weren’t the first to go to Middle Earth. Ralph Bakshi went there over three decades ago and his animated “Lord of the Rings” is now on Blu-ray for the first time.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Watching it now, Bakshi’s “Lord of the Rings” feels like an interesting historical relic but you really have to put yourself in the shoes of a 1978 movie goer to thoroughly appreciate it. Animation for adults wasn’t nearly as common as it is now (this is even pre-“Heavy Metal”). Bakshi had broken ground in that...

Ralph Bakshi has been a visionary filmmaker and animator, whose ambitions always seemed larger than his talent. After cutting his teeth at Terry Toons, he talked his way into running Paramount’s dying animation arm before moving on to work such as the ABC Saturday morning Spider-Man series. He finally gained recognition when he set out to make feature-length films, beginning with the X-rated Fritz the Cat.
Bakshi’s tastes have always run towards edgy fare and he’s produced animated film son subjects Walt Disney or Don Bluth would never have approached, such as American Pop and Hey Good Lookin’ and for that he deserves credit. Unfortunately, in just about every case, the projects have been flawed, largely because not enough money was spent on the animation or the story so they never felt finished.

Idw Publishing is adapting Peter S. Beagle's novel The Last Unicorn as a comic book series. The six-issue miniseries is scripted by Peter B. Gillis and drawn by husband and wife duo Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon. Following the plotline of the 1968 children's book, the comic focuses on a lone unicorn as she embarks on a quest to establish why she is the last of her kind. "I'm delighted that Idw is doing this adaptation of my book and by the real concern they've shown for the integrity of what I wrote," said Beagle. (more)...

Peter S. Beagle’s 1968 novel "The Last Unicorn" (which was later adapted into an animated film in 1982) will now be adapted into a six-issue comic book series from Idw Publishing.
The series will kick off in April 2010, and will be adapted from Beagle's novel by writer Peter B. Gillis — who also happens to be the writer behind one of our favorite series around Splash Page HQ, the early-'80s Marvel series "Strikeforce: Morituri" (recently mentioned in our "Scariest Comics We've ever Read" list). Art for the miniseries will be provided by Renae De Liz and her husband Ray Dillon.

Twilight Zone: 19 Original Stories On The 50th Anniversary edited by Carol Serling (Tor, tpb, 448 pp, $14.99, out September 1)
Fifty years ago, man discovered the Twilight Zone. Specifically, that man was teleplaywright Rod Serling, who won acclaim for such 1950s dramatic endeavors as Requiem For A Heavyweight and Patterns. Another teleplay, The Time Element (a time-tripping endeavor back to Pearl Harbor just before December 7, 1941), led Serling to chart a land of mystery and imagination he named The Twilight Zone. It became TV’s greatest Sf series (sorry, Star Trek), made on-camera host Serling a genre icon and spawned (after Serling’s 1975 death) a movie, two TV program revivals and a well-regarded fiction magazine (published in the 1980s).
Edited by the brilliant T.E.D. Klein, Rod Serling’S The Twilight Zone Magazine was a terrific publication with an unwieldy title. The highlight of every issue was an actual Twilight Zone script (usually by Serling,...

Through the lens of Idw's tenth anniversary, founder Ted Adams and Idw editors and creators addressed a packed room about a wide variety of new projects. Adam Schlesinger liveblogged it, and we also got other info (funny about that)-- here are the highlights:
Jeff Webber talked about the iPhone comics. Idw already has 80 titles available on iTunes now, with much more on the way. Webber talked about the power of the iPhone as a distribution system to capture non-comics fans, which is natural, given the changing nature of comics distribution out of comic book shops and into bookstores and the internet. Apparently, non-typical comic readers enjoy slideshows, rather than a zoomed in page, because it’s easier to read. Also, the swiping from panel to panel increases the interactivity of the medium, which draws non-typical comic fans in. Chris Ryall concluded that 20% of top 100% of book sales on iTunes have been from Idw.
