Peter Walpole has been working with the Wachowskis for over 15 years. The co-production designer of "The Matrix Resurrections" first collaborated with Lana Wachowski on the film adaptation of Alan Moore's "V for Vendetta." Walpole spent years as a set decorator, helping to create the vast worlds presented in "Speed Racer," "Cloud Atlas," and "Jupiter Ascending." He stepped into the role of production designer for the series finale of "Sense8," and all of that work led to the glorious vision that is "The Matrix Resurrections."

While some may feel that the films that made of the original “Matrix” trilogy offer an example of something near a perfect trilogy that should never be tampered with, there was arguably a significant drop after the first film in terms of entertainment value and narrative cohesiveness that is addressed and corrected in the newest addition to the series – The Matrix Resurrections.
Convinced that there may be more to his reality than he thinks there is, programmer Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) investigates whether the construct behind his bestselling series of games – “The Matrix Trilogy” – may not actually be a work of fiction. Of course, having been down this rabbit hole before, Mr. Anderson is wary of who to trust and what exactly he can believe is real and what is not. Of course, the audience knows precisely what Mr. Anderson does not and that makes the fog that the hero...

Are you ready to enter the Matrix again? From visionary filmmaker Lana Wachowski comes “The Matrix Resurrections,” the long-awaited fourth film in the groundbreaking franchise that redefined a genre. Set to release on December 22nd worldwide, the new film reunites original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in the iconic roles they made famous, Neo and Trinity.
In “The Matrix Resurrections,” return to a world of two realities: one, everyday life; the other, what lies behind it. To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, to truly know himself, Mr. Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. And if Thomas…Neo…has learned anything, it’s that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of—or into—the Matrix. Of course, Neo already knows what he has to do. But what he doesn’t yet know is the Matrix is stronger,...

A new trailer for “The Matrix Resurrections” has landed, bringing with it more eye-popping action sequences and more questions about Lana Wachowski’s big return to the iconic action franchise. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back as franchise protagonists Neo and Trinity, but the characters no longer remember each other following the events of the original “Matrix” trilogy. Franchise newcomer Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Morpheus, but he’s not Lawrence Fishburne’s iteration of the character that fans love.
“I think what the script provided was a new narrative and some new opportunities that did make room within the Matrix universe for a new Morpheus,” Abdul-Mateen II teased to Entertainment Weekly in October. “I play a character who’s definitely aware of the history of the Matrix [and] the history of Morpheus. This character is on a journey of self-discovery. There’s a lot in our story that’s about growth,...

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a first teaser poster along with the website for The Matrix Resurrections, prior to the first big trailer release this Thursday. In the original movie, Neo (Keanu Reeves) was told by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne): “You take the blue pill…the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill…you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” Neo chooses the red pill and joins the rebellion.

"I’m a little busy at the moment,” Lilly Wachowski said about the latest Matrix rumor.
Lilly Wachowski turned up at the Television Critics Association press tour last week to promote her new TV series Work in Progress, which will debut on Showtime at Christmas, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to set the record straight about her involvement in Warner Bros' potential rebooting of The Matrix.
Rumours of the Wachowskis' being attached to a new film in the franchise had been building behind comments by former Matrix stunt coordinator and John Wick director Chad Stahelski, who had at one point said he was "super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved" before later saying he'd been quoted out of context.
Discussing Film then claimed that the Wachowskis were indeed in charge of a new Matrix project for WB,...

The Wachowskis will reportedly return to direct a new Matrix movie next year.
The "will they/won't they reboot The Matrix" question keeps humming along. Warner Bros has previously said it's keen to have a go at breathing new life into the groundbreaking sci-fi action franchise, but every few years a few tidbits crop up and then we hear nothing but crickets.
That may (emphasis on "may") finally be about to change, however. Discussing Film, while noting former Matrix stunt coordinator and John Wick director Chad Stahelski's recent comments that he's "super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved" which were then swiftly labelled as "out of context", have reported that a new Matrix movie is very much still in the pipeline, with Zak Penn (Ready Player One) penning the screenplay and Black Panther's...

Last month John Wick director Chad Stahelski said that The Matrix revival film was moving forward at Warner Bros. and that The Wachowski’s would be involved in some way. He is quoted as saying:
“I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved. And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.”
It was later reported that the this comment was inaccurate and taken out of context. But, maybe it wasn’t! Discussing Film, who has reported several scoops that turn out to be true, says that not only are the Wachowski’s involved, they are directing it!

Delve into the story of Jupiter Jones in the brand new trailer for Jupiter Ascending starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth and Sean Bean.
Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in Jupiter Ascending, an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski (The Matrix).
Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks.
Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

The film will showcase the kind of cutting-edge visual effects that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowskis’ films. Additionally, John Gaeta, the visual effects Oscar winner behind “The Matrix,” is contributing to the visual effects design.

No, Channing Tatum will not steal the Wolverine title from Hugh Jackman but the actor is going to play a wolf-human hybrid for the Wachowskis' "Jupiter Ascending." Filming is underway right now and Tatum is co-starring with Mila Kunis. We told you back in April that "Jupiter" is about:
Being the Queen of the Universe! The Wachowski Siblings have started shooting the new sci-fi film "Jupiter Ascending" starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Eddie Redmayne, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, James D.Arcy, and Sean Bean.
Like a sci-fi twist on "Cinderella," Kunis stars as Jupiter Jones, Russian immigrant who scrubs toilets for a living but then discovers that she is next in line to be the Queen of the Universe! How quaint!
While promoting his upcoming action flick "White House Down," Tatum revealed to Movieline that he's a "splice" and they are "essentially built in a test tube. I'm a hybrid wolf and human.

Summer 2014 is already full of immensely anticipated blockbusters, and Jupiter Ascending is one of the few I’m most looking forward to, by far.
Coming off the back of co-directing Cloud Atlas with Tom Tykwer, Andy and Lana Wachowski have returned behind the camera to bring their long-awaited Jupiter Ascending to the big screen next year.
Production has officially begun here in Watford over at Warner Bros.’ Leavesen Studios. And the official press release, announcing that the film began shooting at the start of the month, brings with it the first synopsis:

The next film from The Wachowski Siblings (The Matrix trilogy, Cloud Atlas), the Science Fiction film Jupiter Ascending, has officially began production and Warner Bros has released the first synopsis of the film, giving us our first look at the story.
I've always been a fan of the Wachowski's films. I think they're amazing storytellers and I'm so disappointed that Cloud Atlas didn't do as well as it should have in the theaters. Alas, this is the way the film industry goes, especially when it comes to such esoteric fare as Cloud Atlas. Regardless, their next film, Jupiter Ascending, should have some more mass appeal to movie-goers as it's a full on science fiction film. Warner Bros. has issued a press release this morning announcing that cameras have started rolling on the film, and we've got our first synopsis for the movie (it's been underlined):

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in the film, which began shooting at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on April 2, 2013.
From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” was conceived and written by the Wachowskis, who are also directing. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom the writer/directors have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing the film together with the Wachowskis. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman are serving as executive producers.

So David Mitchell's novel was filmable after all – but will you want to see it twice?
Dai Congrong's bestselling Chinese translation of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake and the film version of David Mitchell's 2004 Booker shortlisted novel, Cloud Atlas, both complex fictions about the cyclical nature of life, should warn us against calling anything unfilmable or untranslatable. They are not necessarily proof, however, that they're worth filming or translating.
In a charming introduction to the new paperback edition of his novel, Mitchell expresses his good fortune that it fell into such "capable hands" as Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer, the film's co-directors and adaptors. The Wachowskis love intricate narratives and the world of ideas; their Matrix trilogy has, I believe, been used in introductory philosophy courses at American colleges. Tykwer's Run Lola Run, a German action movie telling the same story thrice, with events taking different courses,...

Today the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films announced its nominees for the 2013 Saturn Awards, one of the few awards programs in which a lot of us will recognize nearly every production. The awards have been expanded over recent years, so if you are unclear about just what type of productions are honored by the Academy, an explanation is included in the press release below, although it can really be summarized as “we know it when we see it.”
A few head-scratchers, however, just beg to be called out:
Anna Karenina? Les Miserables? Leverage? Elementary? Really? That is some broad definition. No subgenre categories for television. The Academy proofreader should know by now that it’s “Syfy” and not “SyFy” (don’t worry, I fixed it, and sorry, it’s a pet peeve). Adding in historical fiction somewhere somehow without actually mentioning it. The entire category “Best Youth-Oriented...

My current 2013 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design have Anna Karenina winning with Life of Pi the runner up and if the 2013 Art Directors Guild Award winners have anything to suggest about these predictions it would seem I'm on to something as both films were awarded in the Period and Fantasy categories respectively along with a win for Skyfall in the Contemporary category. Skyfall, however, is not up for an Oscar. You can check out my predictions for the category here, and I have included the winners below in bold, red text along with the nominees in each category. I also added all three winners to my Oscar Overture, which is slowly beginning to fill up. Next up are the Ves Awards tomorrow, February 5. Movies (Period Film) Anna Karenina Production Designer: Sarah Greenwood Argo Production Designer: Sharon Seymour Django Unchained Production Designer: J. Michael Riva Les Miserables Production Designer: Eve Stewart...

They're not the Oscars, but it's still good that there are awards for the people who make our television and film experiences so visually stunning. The Art Directors Guild has just announced the nominees for its 2012 awards.
The Guild honors production designers in television, film and advertising, dividing each medium into distinct categories. The result is that some productions not used to getting a lot of awards love do in fact get mentioned.
Take "Community" for example. While you'd be hard-pressed to find a TV critic who doesn't think this is one of TV's best comedies, the show gets nominated for virtually zero awards. The Art Directors Guild, however, took notice when appropriate -- the bizarre, visually interesting and incredible "Pillows and Blankets" episode (a Zap2It pick for one of the best episodes of the year) is nominated.
Of course, lots of the usual suspects make the list as...

I never thought I would be so bothered when it comes to technical awards at the Oscars, but I am already preparing myself for what I expect will be three snubs for a certain film. The Art Directors Guild has all but confirmed one of them will be Moonrise Kingdom's absence from the Production Design nominees by not nominating Adam Stockhausen and Gerald Sullivan's profoundly excellent work. I expect the same to happen at the Oscars and I'm sure Moonrise will be overlooked for Cinematography and Costumes as well, even though everything I'm describing went into what makes it such a great movie. So what did get nominated? Well, in the Contemporary Film category you have Flight, Skyfall, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Impossible and Zero Dark Thirty. Of that group The Impossible and Zero Dark Thirty sound about right. Skyfall is a bit of a stretch,...

While "Cloud Atlas" may be the most polarizing movie of the year (winding up on both year-end best and worst lists), there's no denying its ambition and beauty: it's the ultimate time travel movie about connecting and reconnecting and grappling with free will and destiny. And the production design plays a crucial role in defining the six periods that overlap the 500-year ripple. However, it made sense both economically and logistically to split the "Cloud Atlas" production into two units, with designer Hugh Bateup ("The Matrix Reloaded," "The Matrix Revolutions," "Speed Racer") working with Andy and Lana Wachowski and Uli Hanisch collaborating with Tom Tykwer ("Heaven," "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer," "Three"). Team Wachowski was responsible for Victorian 1849 in the South Pacific, 2144 in Neo Seoul, and the cataclysmic aftermath of 2321 (paired with the 2346 epilogue). Team Tykwer was...

With all the awards attention that Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty has been getting, it’s rather refreshing to see critics choose different winners for Best Picture. That’s exactly what critics from San Diego and Las Vegas have done, picking Argo and Life of Pi, respectively, as the Best Films of 2012.
Apparently each group Really liked their Best Picture winners. San Diego critics also gave Argo awards for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing. Las Vegas Critics also gave Life of Pi Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Score, and the Youth in Film award.
Could we be seeing the end of Zero Dark Thirty‘s reign already? After the Screen Actors Guild nominations this morning, I’m having doubts about its Best Picture chances. For 17 years, SAG has been giving out its Best Cast in a Motion Picture award, with only one instance...

This week we’ve set our net a little wider for our eBay find, wandering into the wild unknown of eBay motors. And look what we’ve found, only the 1967 Pontiac Firebird as driven by Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith) in action blockbuster The Matrix Reloaded. The vintage muscle car is attracting plenty of bids (15 as of this blog being published) and all proceeds from its sale will be donated to DonorsChoose.org, an online charity that helps school students in need. So if you’re in the market for a classic car, an incredible piece of movie memorabilia or are feeling particularly charitable, click over for more…
