Following the recent votes by VFX workers at Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel to unionize with IATSE, a call for collective bargaining received enthusiastic applause during an intimate Visual Effects Society Honors ceremony and reception Friday at Los Angeles’ Skirball Cultural Center.
Referencing the SAG-AFTRA strike and recently ended WGA strike, honoree Bob Coleman, a veteran VFX artist agent and exec, said “a lot of damage has been done, but progress has been made for those two guilds. But the artists in this room and artists all around the world have not fared so well without collective bargaining. And without collective bargaining, there will be no progress for them.” He added, “I believe this is one of the greatest inequities in our industry, and I hope this inequity can be righted.”

Critters is a 1986 American science fiction horror comedy film written and directed by Stephen Herek. It stars Dee Wallace, Scott Grimes, M. Emmet Walsh and Billy Zane.
The plot of the movie follows four small alien creatures, which were accidentally brought to Earth from their home planet by a space probe, as they wreak havoc on a rural Kansas town while being pursued by an intergalactic bounty hunter. Along the way, they meet up with Charlie (Grimes), his brother Brad (Billy Zane) and the local police chief (Walsh). The critters must evade capture and find a way back home before their appetite for destruction leaves the town in ruins.
The special effects used for the Critters range from puppetry to robotics. They have been described as “fuzzy rodents with razor-sharp teeth and an appetite for human flesh”. Although initially thought of as evil creatures that only wanted to cause mayhem and harm people,...

VFX educator Pam Hogarth and Pixar’s Pete Docter were among the honorees at this year’s Visual Effects Society Honors Celebration.
The in-person ceremony took place on Oct. 14 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, Calif., where Ves members celebrated their colleagues’ achievements and the organization’s 25th anniversary.
Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer best known for directing “Monsters, Inc.,” “Up,” “Inside Out” and “Soul,” received this year’s Honorary Membership.
“It’s been a dream of mine to join Ves without having to pay,” Docter said jokingly in his acceptance speech. “I had one overriding obsession: to sell insurance. There have been many highlights in the early part of Chuck's fifth and final season. One of my personal favorites was seeing an almost normal Jeffrey Barnes after he stopped breathing in the fumes from his van during his nightly sleep.
Apparently I'm not the only one. Scott Krinsky has enjoyed the change in his character, telling me over the phone: "I think it's great that [Jeff] finally gets to have a little growth. We get to see another side of him that we really haven't seen before."
The difference between the spacey, flaky Jeff we knew for four seasons, and the one Captain Awesome helped develop by telling him to stop sleeping in his van, is so immense that it causes laughter just by listening to Krinsky's normal talking voice on screen.
The actor also enjoys the change for reasons of character development, though.

Chuck came back for its final season on Friday and with it came the return of our usual round table, Dan, Dr. Toboggan, and myself. Also along for the ride for this final season? A fresh perspective and webmaster of Sarah Walker Fangirls and new TV Fanatic staff writer, Kris Hekmi.
So enjoy our Round Table 2.0 ad we discuss "Chuck vs. The Zoom."
1. Funniest moment from the episode?
Dan F: Although the Buy More story was slight this week, the single moment that Jeff Barnes slyly stood up out of his wheelchair to put away a box was absolutely hilarious and worth the detour from the main plot.
Kris H: Tickled to the max with Sarah and Morgan's special handshake. Although a close second was the massage scene with Chuck, which reminded me a lot of the Friends gag when Ross had to do it.
Dr. T: I almost agree with Dan.

"Chuck Versus the Muuurder" was the third straight episode that failed pop off the screen.
Sure, Chuck acting in the role of the Butler in some instances, and then as whoever thinks they solved the mystery in others, was humorous, but the rest of the gag was a bit tiresome. It was literally the same old story. The characters are in a dark enclosed place and the killer ends up being the absolute last person they expect it to be.
If the whole purpose of the episode was to show that Chuck was now the leader of Team Bartowski, I'm okay with the end result. Because not only has Chuck proven himself to be a real spy at this point, but he kinda is worthy of being the leader of this squad. That is a difficult thing to say if you think about where he was a few years ago.

"Chuck" celebrates Halloween on Monday (Oct. 25) with a frightening glimpse into the mind of Jeff Barnes, a guest turn by Freddy Krueger himself -- and, oh yeah, a Bartowski family reunion.
"Chuck vs. the Aisle of Terror" dives deep into the story of Chuck's mom, Mary (Linda Hamilton), but there's also a good bit of fun to be had. Here are five things to watch for come 8 p.m. Et Monday.
Moms everywhere. You'll learn quite a bit about what Mary Bartowski has been up to since she left Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) when they were kids. But she's not the only mom you'll see: Morgan Fairchild also returns as Awesome's (Ryan McPartlin) mom, Honey, who's in town to check up on her granddaughter-to-be. Ellie's just thrilled.

They’re everyone’s favorite fictional rock band and the least productive employees ever. Yet that’s why we love Chuck‘s Lester Patel and Jeff Barnes. Yesterday, the two men behind Lester and Jeff, Vik Sahay and Scott Krinsky, spoke to us about the upcoming Halloween episode (“Chuck Versus The Aisle of Terror”) and the experience of being Jeffster.
You two have come a long way after four years. You’ve gone from being the background characters to having major parts in episodes, not to mention Jeffster. What has it been like taking that journey with these characters?
Vik Sahay: It’s been an absolute thrill ride. It’s been an interesting exploration of these two characters for me personally. We’ve kind of emerged through this band and as this twosome as like the Odd Couple, and I guess the word odd can be applied in many different ways to us.

Comic Con fans just can't get enough of Chuck. In preparation for Chuck Season 4, the Chuck family made their much anticipated return to Comic Con. After all, Chuck is NBC's coolest and nerdiest last action hero - and we adore him for it. The entire cast was present, including Zachary Levi (Chuck Bartowski), Yvonne Strahovski (Sarah Walker), Sarah Lancaster (Ellie Bartowski), Adam Baldwin (John Casey), Vik Sahay (Lester Patel), Scott Krinsky (Jeff Barnes), Joshua Gomez (Morgan Grimes), Ryan McPartlin (Devon 'Captain Awesome' Woodcomb), and Mark Christopher Lawrence (Big Mike). Chris Fedak, who with Josh Schwartz created the NBC favorite Chuck, spent much of the Comic-Con panel writing things down. Or at least pretending to write things down.
On stage at the event, which was jump started with a performance by Jeffster!, were exec producers Schwartz and Fedak, Zachary Levi (Chuck Bartowski), Joshua Gomez (Morgan Grimes), Adam Baldwin (John Casey), Yvonne Strahovski (Sarah Walker), Ryan McPartlin (Devin 'Captain Awesome' Woodcomb), Sarah Lancaster (Ellie Bartowski), Vik Sahay (Lester Patel), Scott Krinsky (Jeff Barnes) andMark Christopher Lawrence (Big Mike).
There were a few running jokes at the Saturday morning event. The tendency of Baldwin's character to answer questions with grunts was one.
Budget cuts that came with the renewal were going to lead to changes, said Schwartz. "So we can only afford for Adam Baldwin to grunt."
"My inner monologue when I grunt is 'Joss Whedon'," said Baldwin.

Feature film visual effects facility CafeFX has launched a character-animation division, led by Academy Award-nominated animation supervisor James Straus.
The idea for the new unit was born when the company created the characters for Pan's Labyrinth, CafeFX CEO Jeff Barnes said. "We started getting a lot of interest in more character-animation work," he said.
The company has been building an animation pipeline that would operate parallel with the company's visual effects business. The pipeline includes Autodesk Maya at its core for animation and modeling, Softimage XSI for texturing and lighting and Mental Ray for rendering. Plans call for the addition of more animators, specialized hardware and software as well as in-house training. "We are increasing the quality and efficiency of what we have," Straus said.
The new capabilities also will be available for production at Sententia Entertainment, CafeFX's feature film production division, whose credits include Pan's Labyrinth.
Straus' first project at CafeFX will be character creation for the Frank Darabont-helmed The Mist, an adaptation of the Stephen King science fiction story in which numerous species of horrific creatures emerge in a small town in Maine after a massive thunderstorm.
