Guillermo del Toro is a fan and soon you will be too. Just wait until you see the art of Chet Zar, a former creature designer/makeup effects artist that worked on everything from The Blob to Darkman, Hellboy, and even Tool’s music videos. Since, he’s become a fine artist in the genre of Dark Art.
Bloody is excited to share his massive new hardcover art book, “Dy5topia: A Field Guide to the Dark Universe of Chet Zar”, which is a field guide that explains and categorizes the characters and mythology of the dystopian alternate dimension Chet Zar has been painting over the last 20 years.
Introduction excerpt by Mike Correll:
“When we embarked upon this journey to understand Dy5topia, we knew very little. What we did know existed in the paintings themselves. The paintings are the only ‘evidence’ that we can base our investigation and research on.

If you can’t get enough of Pacific Rim, then you’re in luck – because I’ve got two new things to share today. One of them is Spoilery and serious (and awesome), while the other just proves that the Internet is full of wiseacres. Let’s jump right in, shall we? If you haven’t seen the film yet, you will probably want to avoid this part of the story and the giant picture below (easier said than done, I know). Wayne Barlowe did loads of concept art for the movie – much of it collected in the film’s art book. Many of those images have been featured online already, but there was one that most sites thought was a little too big a spoiler to share prior to the movie’s release. The piece in question is a concept design of the...

Wayne Barlowe worked with Guillermo del Toro on his much talked about but never made film, Mountains of Madness. "[Director] Guillermo del Toro wanted original designs that would redefine the genre," says Barlowe, whose creature design has been featured in Avatar, the Harry Potter films, Galaxy Quest and tons of other films. In particular, del Toro really wanted the team of creature designers to steer clear of homages to earlier monsters or other films. When del Toro was trying to make a movie of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, Barlowe spent a couple of months working on creature designs, and had a lot of fun "digging into Lovecraft," something he'd also done in his book Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials. But none of that work made its way into Pacific Rim, and "I did not superimpose any Cthulhu madness into my designs," says Barlowe. Thanks to Deanna for the heads up!

A few days I had a chance to speak to Guillermo del Toro about his giant robots vs. giant monsters extravaganza, “Pacific Rim.”
The film is set as a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.
Here is what Guillermo del Toro had to say about his upcoming film and more…
Your writing process, how do you write plots and how do you write the dialogue and structure for a story like this?
Guillermo del Toro: Well, when we came on board to do Pacific Rim, Travis had a pitch that was about eight pages long and outlined the world. The Kaijus, the Jaegers, the ideas of the breach. But then I came up with the idea of the two...

It's been a good week for fans of Guillermo del Toro. The New Yorker dropped a massive profile [1] piece that is second only to one of the director's expletive-laden commentaries when it comes to giving some insight into how the man thinks. But all is not yet great. While he and James Cameron have partnered at Universal to make an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, the script is still under the knife and the studio hasn't yet greenlit the film. Enter Tom Cruise. We knew that Guillermo wanted the star [2] to be in the film, and now James Cameron says they're still hoping to sign him. Speaking to MTV [3], Cameron said, Tom does want to do the picture. I don't think we have a deal with him yet, but we're hoping to get that closed soon. Guillermo is madly working on a new draft of the script.

Wayne Barlowe gets paid to make your eyes pop out of your skull. The wildly talented science fiction and fantasy artist/author designed the creatures for James Cameron's Avatar. He's done concept art for a number of other Hollywood blockbusters, including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Hellboy and most recently Peter Jackson's two-part, big-screen adaptation of The Hobbit. But even though he's done reams of work for the film industry, it was his vivid reimagining of Dante Alighieri's Inferno—the appropriately titled Barlowe's Inferno—that made him the perfect candidate to work on Visceral Games' new hack-and-slash action title, which also...

Now he's had his webby tights ripped off, what might be next for Tobey Maguire? The answer, according to Steven Zeitchik's synidcated article (see it at AZCentral, for example) might hinge on what kind of career Maguire is looking to mold. There's a big-budget franchise-friendly path, and there's a lower road of more 'dramatic' work, and in mapping these out, the article mentions a few possible pictures on both sides. My picks to follow after the break. Apparently Sony have been developing a big-screen adaptation of Alec Gillis' Worlds with Maguire in the frame as a potential star. The book, first published in 2005, has a forward by James Cameron that evokes nothing more than Avatar: Not since Wayne Barlowe's Expedition has an artist conceived an alien biosphere in such baroque detail, while remaining true to nature's fundamental principles of adaptation, selection and ecological interdependence. These worlds are intricately conceived,...

Back in the days of the old Coming Attractions I had a long-running editorial column called Director's Cut. It allowed me a place to say what was on my mind and what I thought about news or events related to film. Now that CA 2.0 is up and running and I still have access to this mad scientist equipment, I thought why not slap Director's Cut on the operating table, hook it up to the lightning rod and see if I can't bring it back to life? When has that idea ever gone wrong? -- Ps

Filming doesn’t begin until 2010, but that won’t stop good ol’ Guillermo del Toro from leaking some more minor details about The Hobbit whenever he can! Over at BilboHobbit.com, the director promises creatures and puppets on the scale of those in Hellboy 2, and intends to focus on some of the creatures who weren’t prominently featured in The Lord of the Rings trilogy… ”We will be pushing the goblin kingdom. We will be pushing Smaug, the Spiders of Mirkwood. We will be pushing them to the edge of technology where we will fuse animatronics and CGI into a seamless new art form in creating creatures.” Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, Hellboy Visual Designer Wayne Barlowe and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro are del Toro’s top choices for his behind-the-scenes collaborators. And as far as effects, del Toro stresses that, “You will see some mind-boggling mixture of CGI / Puppetry like never before.

As part of a promotion for the new Hellboy II Blu-Ray, Guillermo del Toro participated in an online chat with fans last weekend. As always, del Toro usually provides some minor updates on The Hobbit during chats like this, and he revealed a few details actually worth mentioning. Thanks to BilboHobbit.com for providing the transcript of the chat. Most importantly, del Toro says that filming will begin in 2010 and that The Hobbit (to eventually be split into two films) will shoot for 370 days. Considering a typical film shoot is usually only a few months, that's a shocking number, but certainly necessary for this adaptation. Gullermo also said that he's hoping to work with the following past collaborators: Hellboy comic book author Mike Mignola during the "design stage for a week or two", concept artist Wayne Barlowe, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro of all of del Toro's previous films, and special effects...

From a make-up effects standpoint, the highlight of Hellboy 2 is the troll market sequence, which is an eye-popping variety of bizarre creatures created by the team at Spectral Motion as well as a number of smaller European shops. The London-based Creature Effects, for example, built a handful of specialty characters based on designs by concept artists Wayne Barlowe and Francisco Ruiz Velasco. .The Limb Vendor is a Barlowe design,. explained company co-founder Cliff Wallace, .and his head is basically a big bone with goggles and a mask.
