From The Brood to Crash and new film The Shrouds, the Canadian body horror pioneer has outraged the censors and inspired countless directors
In 2021, French film-maker Julia Ducournau won the Cannes Palme d’Or with her blistering, autoerotic magnum opus Titane. It was a richly deserved victory – a celebration of a bold new voice in cinema. Yet for longstanding fans of body horror – a genre pioneered decades earlier by the Canadian writer-director David Cronenberg – it also felt like karmic payback for the festival’s botched response to Crash, Cronenberg’s controversial 1996 masterpiece, to which Titane is heavily indebted.
During a career spanning six decades and more than 20 feature films, Cronenberg, 81, has inspired everyone from Japanese auteur Shinya Tsukamoto (Tetsuo: The Iron Man) to rising British star Rose Glass. But his brilliant Jg Ballard adaptation was denied its own Palme d’Or win thanks largely to the disdain of Cannes jury president Francis Ford Coppola.

Have you ever dreamed about being a better version of yourself? With her second film, Coralie Fargeat not only addresses this question but takes aim at ageism and sexism in the entertainment industry with a riotous, dreamlike horror-thriller that ends in a delirious symphony of blood, guts and otherwise undefinable viscera. Imagine David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive fused in a telepod with David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers, add the unbelievably dynamic pairing of Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, process it through the ultra-vivid color palette that is Fargeat’s hyper-saturated imagination, sprinkle a bit of J.G. Ballard on top, and you have the perfect breakout genre movie of the year.
If you had “Demi Moore to make a hagsploitation body horror splatter movie” on your 2024 bingo card, you stand to make a fortune, but, come on, it’s not very likely; there’s been nothing in her filmography so far...

As a seasoned Met Gala attendee who has made several trips up the iconic Met stairs, Nicole Kidman lived up to her elegant reputation by reviving a 1950s vintage gown for her return to the gala this year.
I love how she subtly interpreted this year’s theme, opting for a bespoke black-and-white Balenciaga gown instead of the more popular whimsical floral motif. Some, however, weren’t impressed by her ostensibly typical black-and-white look, which they assumed deviated from the evening’s “The Garden of Time” dress code.

Zendaya made a spectacular comeback to the Met Gala on Monday! Following a five-year absence, Zendaya returned as a co-chair for the 2024 Met Gala, joining Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, and Bad Bunny. Before this, her last Met Gala appearance was in 2019 when she dazzled the crowd in her magical Tommy Hilfiger Cinderella ball gown.
The 27-year-old actress delivered more than I could have imagined at the 2024 Met Gala, showcasing not one or two but three exquisite outfits appropriate for a co-chair. Her latest outing came following a whirlwind press tour for Challengers, where she once again demonstrated her mastery of method dressing by donning chic tennis-inspired looks.
In true Zendaya and, of course, Law Roach fashion, they did not let fans, including me, down.

Archival Looks, Recycled Materials and Lab Grown Jewels Puts Spotlight on Sustainability at Met Gala
Fashion’s biggest night is star-studded event all around — usually with a focus on new clothes — but this year a less talked-about topic joined the conversation at the Met Gala in a big way: sustainability.
Monday night’s event kicked off with La La Anthony, a red carpet co-host for Vogue‘s livestream, proudly declaring that she was wearing “pre-loved vintage accessories” from eBay. The announcement set the stage for some of the celebrities who Anthony and her co-hosts, Gwendoline Christie and Ashley Graham, interviewed throughout the night who also showcased their sustainable red-carpet choices.
Designer Stella McCartney was joined by actress and model Cara Delevingne, singer FKA Twigs and singer Ed Sheeran on the Met Gala red carpet. The British designer created custom looks for each of her guests, all made from 100 percent sustainable materials.
The designer’s brand collaborated with sustainable jewelry company Vrai for Delevingne’s and Sheeran’s looks.

Elle Fanning is best known for portraying Sleeping Beauty in the 2014 film Maleficent and its 2019 sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. So, I am unsurprised that she chose to channel her iconic character, Aurora, on the red carpet at the 2024 Met Gala.
On Monday, May 6, Elle Fanning was among the many celebrities who attended the event, which raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and celebrates the Costume Institute’s annual exhibits.

The dress code for the night was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by the art museum’s new exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” And I think the 26-year-old American actress captured the theme flawlessly, exuding romance and fantasy with her attire.

As is house tradition, Thom Browne’s 2024 Met Gala crew posed for a pre-carpet group photo, shared exclusively with The Hollywood Reporter.
The Thom Browne class of Met Gala 2024 group includes Cynthia Erivo, Rebecca Ferguson, Gigi Hadid, model Alton Mason, NBA pro Ben Simmons, Jaden Smith, Steven Yeun and — making a rare red carpet appearance together — Queen Latifah and her partner, choreographer/producer Eboni Nichols.
They gathered for their class photo at The Pierre New York hotel, wearing pieces that tackled the night’s “The Garden of Time” dress code and also speak to Browne’s laser-sharp vision and effortless cool. On display among the group of nine are nature details, plaid and a whole lot of black and white.

Nicki Minaj’s whimsical Marni minidress popped with petal power at the 2024 Met Gala.
The “Pink Friday” rapper stepped out in an artful dress made from yellow silk duchesse adorned with hand-painted recycled aluminum flowers. Her museum-worthy silhouette featured a bold brushstroke-like texture, giving the impression of a three-dimensional oil painting. At her side was the Italian fashion house’s creative director, Francesco Risso.
Minaj completed her custom Technicolor look with her very own line of Pink Friday press-on nails — in a decidedly low-key light pink almond shape — and a matching chain strap Trunkaroo clutch by Marni.
Minaj made her Met Gala red carpet debut in 2013 when she wore a navy gown by Tommy Hilfiger. This year marks her seventh time attending the fundraiser; she has previously worn Prabal Gurung, Riccardo Tisci for Burberry, Jeremy Scott and H&m to the event.

The theme of the 2024 Met Gala was “The Garden of Time” — based on a story by J.G. Ballard – but, really, the theme of all Met Galas always has been: Go big or stay home!
While there have been myriad gorgeous gowns, jewels and natty tuxes over many Met Gala years, what do the most dress-obsessed actually remember? Cher half-naked. Lady Gaga’s change of dress performance art. Billy Porter’s royal entrance in Egyptian armor and entourage. Katy Perry as a chandelier. They all proved: It doesn’t pay to stay staid — even if staid means gorgeous.
So the question comes down to: Does one do good outrageous? Or outrageously bad? Both the bad and the beautiful always get the most ink — sometimes, you can’t tell the difference. With such risky looks, it’s a toss of the coin. If you’re Cher, you can pull off anything. Everyone...

Katy Perry has pulled off some pretty unreal looks at past Met Galas, but nothing compares to this year: The images that surfaced of Perry on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art are actually not real.
The superstar singer went viral Monday night during the thick of the Met Gala coverage after images made the rounds online that seemingly showed Perry on theme with a billowing floral gown. The dress code, “The Garden of Time,” takes its cue from the 1962 short story of the same name by J.G. Ballard and blends seamlessly with the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.

Met Gala veterans Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo hit this year’s cream and mossy green carpet in looks subtly inspired by their November movie adaptation of beloved Broadway musical Wicked. The subtle inspiration in question? Pink and green accents.

Gen Z “It” girl Sabrina Carpenter had her belle of the ball moment on Monday’s Met Gala red carpet.
The 24-year-old “Espresso” singer, known for her flirty, feminine style, stepped out in an elegant black-bodice ball gown with a dreamy pastel and white skirt by Oscar de la Renta, according to Vogue.
The pop starlet opted for a fresh, glowing makeup look by celebrity makeup artist Carolina Gonzalez. According to a release, the inspiration for the look was “delicately fierce.” Carpenter and Gonzalez also used Cetaphil cleanser, eye serum, face serum and hydrating lotion for her skin prep, paired with Cetaphil lotion on her body.
The classic ensemble wasn’t the only thing that had people talking at the event. Carpenter was joined by boyfriend Barry Keoghan for their red carpet debut as a couple. Although it’s the couple’s first official red carpet appearance, they attended Vanity Fair’s Oscars Party together.

Nicole Kidman certainly turned back the clock in her Balenciaga look at the Met Gala.
Designed by creative director Demna Gvasalia, the Oscar-winning star stepped out in a 1950s-inspired white double silk bustier and flared skirt over frayed layers of black silk organza to mimic feathers. The original gown was inspired by the ruffled dresses worn by flamenco dancers, a nod to Balenciaga’s Spanish heritage.
“It was based on a dress in 1951 by Balenciaga at that time by Cristóbal,” Kidman told La La Anthony on the red carpet. “It was something that I saw in [a Richard] Avedon photo [of Dorian Leigh from Harper’s Bazaar]. I asked Demna if he was willing to reinterpret it. So he reinterpreted it in the vein of the sleeping beauties and the gowns, bringing them back to life. Midsommar (2018) Ari AsterThis Spring, the Costume Institute at the Met is putting on an exhibition titled "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." It's all about garments that, through the passage of time, have degraded or become too fragile to wear and exhibit by traditional means. They are slumbering, but through technological wizardry and museum magic, one hopes to breathe new life into them. From pepper ghosts to glass coffins, replicas, and immersive soundscapes, the Met will deliver visions of the fashioned ephemeral cataloged through an appeal to nature. The exhibit has three elemental parts– earth, air, and water –underlining the connective tissue between the pieces and the natural world, where decay is an essential part of existence. In some ways, it's a look at notions of impermanence through fashion.
Fittingly, this year's Met Gala has a dress code defined as "The Garden of Time," a novel by J.G. Ballard that considers similar themes.

Straying from her typical Met Gala ensemble, Kim Kardashian stepped out in a cozy meets couture look.
The reality star and brand mogul wore Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano. The designer created a haute couture ensemble comprised of a pale grey cashmere cardigan, a couture corset rewoven from antique silver brocade and a skirt tooled with silver metal.
The luxury fashion brand said the look was meant to evoke lace, flowers, leaves and sprigs alongside silver chain and floral motifs cut from mirror fragments. The silhouette was “inspired by the symbiotic love-affair between Elizabeth Taylor and her jewelry,” according to a release.

Along with Mindy Kaling — who walked the Metropolitan Museum steps in flowy Guarav Gupta — actress and fashion star of the moment Demi Moore wore one of the most sculptural gowns of Met Gala 2024.
On a night when a number of stars played it safe — see Donald Glover in a brown suit — Moore went all out in a custom dress by British-American designer Harris Reed Vogue livestream co-host Ashley Graham called one of “the biggest outfits I’ve seen all night.”
The outspread black dress features large pink-and-white flower imagery and black arrow-like spikes. Moore assured Graham, however, that it wasn’t heavy. “Actually, it’s not heavy at all,” said the actress, cheekily adding, “Feel my hips. They’re soft. It makes you want to rub them.” See all the red carpet arrivals here.
Reed shared that the dress was inspired by the stunning Cartier necklace that Moore paired with the look.

For her second appearance at the Met Gala, Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline stuns in a perfectly tailored Tommy Hilfiger gown based on the brand’s staple: the button-up shirt.
In addition to Cline, guest including K-pop group Stray Kids and GQ Global Editorial Director Will Welch wore the designer and attended with him and his wife, Dee Hilfiger.
Cline and Hilfiger opted for a straightforward approach to “The Garden of Time” dress code. With shades of white and cream, scattered rosettes and a full skirt, Cline’s look contrasts the streamlined Stella McCartney black and silver dress she wore last year at her 2023 Met Gala debut.
As for her voluminous blowout, hairstylist Marc Mena used the viral Wavytalk’s 5-in-1 Curling Wand Set. He started off with the thermal brush attachment to achieve that effortless ’90s look, and then added extra movement with various-sized barrels throughout her long locks.

Lana Del Rey looked sharp at the 2024 Met Gala.
Fresh off headlining two weekends of Coachella, the “Video Games” singer stepped onto the moss-inspired carpet in a veiled cream Alexander McQueen sheath gown by Seán McGirr, who took inspiration from Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.
A haute couture version of a fit-and-flare silhouette from the label’s spring/summer line, Del Rey wore a silk, tulle and georgette corseted dress with hand-embroidered thorny vines that appeared to climb up from her skirt and behind her head. The singer finished the look with a crystal-embellished red rose corsage. The look was a nod to the British fashion house’s “crown of thorns” headpiece from the fall/winter 1996 collection of then-creative director Shaun Leane.
“I’m with Sean [McGirr at] McQueen — Oh god, I hope I don’t poke him,” Del Rey joked on the red carpet, where she stood beside collaborator Kim Kardashian. (The...

Mindy Kaling turned heads at Monday’s Met Gala red carpet when she stepped out in a beige sculptural gown.
The multi-hyphenate wore a custom gown by Indian designer Gaurav Gupta. Kaling referred to Gupta as a “genius” in an on-the-carpet interview with Vogue.
“It makes me really happy to rep such talented geniuses who happen to be from my community,” Kaling said to Vogue of her gown and her jewelry, which was also created by an Indian designer.
The beautifully textured dress became an early favorite of the night. Kaling noted that the dress had a name — “The Melting Flower of Time.” While the structural front of the dress was a hit, the back of the dress truly made the dress stand out, emphasizing the name.
“If you look at the cape, you can see that it looks like a flower that was once blossoming is now melting,” Kaling...

Jennifer Lopez, a co-chair of fashion’s biggest night, wore her most daring Met Gala ensemble yet at Monday’s gala, taking place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Arriving on the earlier end, as is expected for a co-chair of the night, Lopez stepped onto the carpet in a Custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown designed by Daniel Roseberry.

Ayo Edebiri has hit the carpet of her very first Met Gala.
The Bear’s breakout star, who has become a fashion darling with a series of custom looks during awards season, teamed with Loewe for a custom floral, backless column dress. The halter-neck gown was covered in a hand-painted, hand-embroidered floral lace and accessorized by 3D appliqué flowers delicately placed to look in bloom.
In an interview with Vogue, Edebiri said that of her options this year, this “was the one that spoke to me the most.” Her stylist, Danielle Goldberg, then relayed that it also was the creation that Loewe designer Jonathan Anderson was most stoked about.
“That really locked that in for me, in my heart,” Edebiri added to Vogue. “The level of craftsmanship that it took to make this dress is so beyond. Looking into those details, taking that into consideration, it just amplifies that feeling for me.

The Grammy-winning artist paired her Dune-esque dress with water-inspired jewelry by John Hardy, including yellow gold earrings with aquamarine, yellow diamond and blue topaz; and two yellow gold pave rings. She accessorized a simple gold necklace and an oversized hourglass clutch, while her beauty look featured a cat eyeliner and a dusting of sand on her left shoulder. Her nails featured 3D chain embellishments that mimicked dripping sand.

Opulent to outrageous, elegant to excessive, Monday night’s Met Gala red carpet was equal parts star-studded and visually stunning. Then again, with Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth as the evening’s co-chairs, how could it not?
Fold in scores of other stars — were there ever this many at a Met Gala? — including Nicole Kidman, Alexandra Daddario, Barry Keoghan, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Elizabeth Debicki, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Strong, Michelle Williams and Serena Williams, and the 2024 Met Gala ranked as among the most thrilling and stylish in recent memory.
This year’s dress code, “The Garden of Time,” took its cue from the 1962 short story of the same name by J.G. Simply doing a literal red carpet for a red carpet event isn’t enough anymore. Especially when it’s a party as big as the Met Gala.
Each year, the Met Gala rolls out a new carpet design that’s inspired by the theme of the evening.
This year, the star-studded crowd, which includes co-chairs Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth, is walking up steps that are covered in a cream color with mossy green accents along the sides.
The design choice is in keeping with the dress code of the 2024 Met Gala, “The Garden of Time,” which is inspired by a J.G. Ballard story.
Meanwhile, the sides of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s storied steps are lined with greenery-covered barriers between the stars and photographers and reporters, and the walls are painted with forest scenes that look like they could be out of an old masters painting.

Celebrating the launch of her Fenty Beauty Soft’lit Foundation at an event in Los Angeles on Friday, Rihanna dropped some hints about her always highly anticipated Met Gala look.
“I’m actually just keeping it real simple this year,” the 36-year-old singer and beauty mogul told Extra on the red carpet.
“I think it’s gonna come to what my makeup and what my hair is going to do,” she continued. “We wanna play with that, but I have no idea what I’m gonna do with that.”
Rihanna’s Met Gala selections are often the talk of the town and a hit on social media. Last year, the star closed out the Karl Lagerfeld-themed red carpet in a Chanel-inspired, camellia flower-covered hooded gown by Valentino with a long skirt train. How does historic fashion compete with the likes of Zendaya and Jennifer Lopez on the biggest night of the New York calendar? That’s Andrew Bolton’s superpower.

How do you capture Jenne Casarotto? She was at the intersection of theatre, film and television. It all, seemingly, swirled around her.
Not just around her.
It was the brilliant team that she assembled at Casarotto Ramsay & Associates, the agency that’s been at the epicenter of UK arts culture for over three decades. Correction: The company’s reach extended far beyond the environs of London’s Soho.
One would see her in Venice, Cannes, Toronto and Sydney. One would not be at all surprised to be at a screening at, let’s say, Sundance, and there’d be a tap on the shoulder when the lights came up. “That was great stuff, wasn’t it?” She’d say gleefully.
It was a bit of a test because she’d expect you to be honest with her. Well, it was godawful, actually, and she’d nod sagely, her eyes twinkling behind her specs.

The cult director grew up on the luscious island of Madagascar just as it was casting off French rule. It was a deliriously happy time for him – but now he realises what was really going on
Robin Campillo’s new movie, Red Island, is an amazing, moving evocation of his own childhood in Madagascar as what the Anglo-Saxons call an “army brat”. His soldier dad was posted there with the family in the early days of the island’s independence from French imperial control – and the 10-year-old roamed free in this lush and gorgeous place, but all the time aware of sexual licence among the grownups, their wan melancholy at their imminent expulsion from this paradise and the increasingly pointed anti-colonial rumblings among the Indigenous people. The boy is almost like young Jim in Jg Ballard’s Empire of the Sun (played by Christian Bale in Spielberg’s film version...

The Brit crime comedy “Down Terrace” was a hit with critics back in 2009. Made on a shoestring budget and shot over a little more than a week, it was lapped up for giving a uniquely dark and hilarious twist to the standard gangster flick while adding splashes of U.K. kitchen-sink social realism into the mix. The film also set up its director Ben Wheatley — making his feature debut after years working on TV, commercials and shorts — for cinematic greatness.
Fifteen years on and Wheatley has more than staked out his territory as one of the U.K.’s most exciting — and unexpected — filmmakers. After landing “cult director” status thanks to his “Down Terrace” follow-ups — the gritty psychological horror “Kill List,” murderous black comedy “Sightseers” and trippy period feature “A Field in England” — he then upped the stakes (and A-list stars) with J.G. Ballard adaptation “High Rise” (starring Tom Hiddleston...
