The Asylum — the independent film and TV studio known for its Sharknado franchise and zombie series Z Nation — celebrated its 25th anniversary with a bash on the Santa Monica Pier on Wednesday night.
But instead of helping blow out the candles, revelers were forced to deal with blown fuses as the Pier suffered a power outage for close to 15 minutes. When The Hollywood Reporter arrived on the scene at 9:30 p.m., the entire Pier was pitch black while hundreds of guests remained in place at the event, which took over Pacific Park, the oceanside amusement park.
Guests were still allowed to check-in to the event as security suggested the outage would be temporary. And they were right. Shortly before 9:40 p.m., the lights came back on and guests like Bai Ling, Kristanna Loken, Geoff Meed, Cindy Busby, Carlos Ramirez, Terry Woodberry,...

“It used to be cool to hate us, and now it’s become cool to like us.”
So says Paul Bales, COO of The Asylum, the B-movie flag-bearers who have cornered — in somewhat notorious fashion — one of the most beloved, derided, schlocky and, well, inexpensive rungs of Hollywood’s lower echelons.
This year, The Asylum has its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter-century of super-prolific, low-budget filmmaking, unashamed studio piggybacking and some of the most comically ludicrous concepts (and posters) ever made. The production companies and executive producers behind Z Nation have been placed on the WGA’s Strike/Unfair List for allegedly failing to pay more than $5.1 million in residuals, pension and health contributions, and interest owed to the writers of the former series.
The zombie-apocalypse drama aired for five seasons on Syfy and now is streaming on Netflix.
The WGA says Z Nation’s executive producers David Rimawi, David Michael Latt, Paul Bales and Steve Graham and its production entities – The Global Asylum, Go2 Digital Media and Go2 Z 3 LLC, Go2 Z 4 LLC and Go2 Z 5 LLC – have failed to honor an arbitrator’s decision from October in which the companies and Graham were ordered to pay $4,832,748 in unpaid residuals and pension and health contributions, plus interest. “Seven months later,” the guild said, “the writers have still not been paid, and interest continues to accrue, which is why more than $5.1 million is now owed.

A restart for film and television is bearing down but looming uncertainty around Covid-19 insurance has the business on edge.
Pandemic insurance disappeared in March. Three months later there’s still no viable alternative to put many independent producers back on a path to completion bond backed financing. It’s pressing, as interrupted productions restart mostly covered by preexisting insurance, while new projects may remain in limbo.
“Right now there is no insurance for [Covid] at all, at any price,” said Steven Ransohoff, CEO of Film Finances, at a recent panel hosted by Cinetic Media.
A few insurers are exploring limited policies that are very costly, between 10%-15% of total budget by some accounts. “Ridiculously expensive,” said one film executive. “It’s really not even like having insurance.”
These policies, said another, “will be limited to a couple of million dollars – maybe $2 [million], maybe $5 [million]. But what’s going to happen if you...

Thursday is D-Day, the 75th anniversary of the day when Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, to fight the Nazis in World War II. To commemorate the memory of those lost there, Cinedigm is releasing a feature film with a handful of actors who know a thing or two about fighting.
“D-Day” stars Mma fighters Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture (Couture is also a former U.S. Army Sergeant) alongside Weston Cage Coppola (Nicolas Cage’s son) and Jesse Kove in their action-heavy take on the Battle of Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.
“These beaches are vital to winning this war. Thousands of lives depend on it,” Liddell says in the trailer.

Ian Ziering and Tara Reid are packing up their chainsaws and heading to Manhattan for Sharknado 2: The Second One, which will trend on Twitter some as-yet-unspecified day in July, Syfy warned today. Not only are Ziering and Reid back, Anthony Ferrante again will direct the screenplay by Thunder Levin, who also wrote Sharknado, so as to make sure the sequel is as craptastic as the original. And Syfy and producer-distributor The Asylum have hired casting director Mike Fenton and his partner Ann Frederick, of Fenton-Frederick Casting, to supervise cameo casting. So, Damon Lindelof, Mia Farrow, and Greg Berlanti — get in touch with them quickly, because shooting begins next month. In Sharknado 2, Syfy says, “a freak weather system turns its deadly fury on New York City, unleashing a ‘sharknado’ on the city’s population and its most iconic sites, with Fin and April the only ones able to save the city.

The other day, we were scrolling through an on-demand premium movie channel looking for a movie to watch. We didn't get past "B" -- "Bourne Legacy."
That kind of viewer behavior is exactly why some movie studios are engaging in "alpha-stacking" -- choosing movie titles at the front of the alphabet.
Quartz has a graph showing the alphabetical distribution of video-on-demand movies on Comcast's cable television service Xfinity, and A, B, and C are among the top letters.
Paul Bales, of independent studio The Asylum, remarks, "It's not something we're doing. It's a choice the consumer is making. Americans are lazy people. They can't be bothered to go past 'L.'"
Bales points out that one of the top video-on-demand movies last year was "#holdyourbreath," with the hashtag symbol landing it even in front of the numerical movie titles.

Anyone who half-ironically tuned into the Syfy original movie/meme-generator "Sharknado," we're blaming you. Thanks to the shocking success of grade-z creature feature "Sharknado," we're now perched on the toothy edge of a "ridiculous shark movie" boom, one that could gobble up Hollywood whole. Because, as we've learned from "The Social Network," the only thing cooler than a million shark movies is a billion shark movies.
According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Syfy is planning a string of new shark-related movies, and on July 27 will have an all-day Sharkathon that includes a repeat of "Sharknado" (its third airing on the network), Roger Corman's moderately funnier and better produced "Sharktopus," "Swamp Shark," and "2-Headed Shark Attack" (a movie that came on right after the initial "Sharknado" airing).

This story first appeared in the Aug. 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Thirty-eight years after Jaws spawned a movie franchise, sharks have become big business for Hollywood. Syfy's recent Sharknado broadcast might have brought intense Internet attention to the genre, but the campy horror film is just the tip of the fin. "There has been a surge in shark movies -- the concepts are getting more outrageous, and Sharknado is the pinnacle," says Paul Bales, partner for administration and operations at The Asylum, the Burbank-based studio behind Sharknado. We shot most of this in a single day and worked on the post-production in our spare time over the month for December, 2012. It was an ambitious project and we are very happy with what we achieved. The Mmi Dead: “The Mmi Dead, Minneapolis Media Institute’s take on the zombie craze is a mix of The Walking Dead, Night of the Living Dead, The Wizard of Oz, and our love movies in general (serious and campy). Production company The Asylum will release their version of Hansel & Gretel January 8th on DVD. This is, coincidentally, the same month that Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters will be released. Both films deal with classic characters from the Grimm Brothers. In this film, the witch captures and confines this brother and sister in her dungeony home. They are fed to "fatten them up," until they can find a way to escape. View the trailer for Hansel & Gretel below. Release Date: January 8th, 2013 (DVD). Director: Anthony C. Ferrante. Writer: Jose Prendes. Producers: David Michael Latt, David Rimawi, Paul Bales. Cast: Dee Wallace, Brent Lydic, Stephanie Greco. Bloodstorm
Stars: Dominique Swain, Jake Busey, Josh Allen, Christopher Karl Johnson, James Maxwell Young, Lilan Bowden, Adam Burch | Written by Paul Bales | Directed by Joseph J. Lawson
Released in the Us under the more exploitative (and actually more apt) moniker of Nazis at the Centre of the Earth, Bloodstorm is yet another production form The Asylum, only this time it seems that they’ve managed to get some major (well I say major, may at one time) talent in the form of Dominique Swain and Jake Busey.
Like many an Asylum flick Bloodstorm has a lot in common with a film already freely available, this time its the Norwegian zombie Nazi flick Dead Snow that seems to be the inspiration for this Antarctic zombie Nazi flick! The timing couldn’t be better either – we’ve just had Nazis invading from space and now we have Nazis invading from the very core of the planet.

After last year’s numerical doomsday 11-11-11 but before 2012’s December 21st Mayan-pocalypse lurks another sinister date: 12-12-12. If it wasn’t a sinister date before it sure is now thanks to a new Omen-esque horror flick titled after the date on which its hellspawn will be born.
Why the 12-12-12 date? As Asylum producer Paul Bales proclaims, "This is our last chance to make a movie about the Mayan 2012 prophecy before the world ends on December 21st". Gotta milk them doomsdays, you know; and milk it they will – with breast milk.
Writer-director Jared Cohn, also the man at the helm of The Asylum’s upcoming theatrically released slasher flick #holdyourbreath, is also behind this latest entry in the satanic baby genre. The film revolves around a new mother who comes to realize her newborn baby Sebastian – born on 12/12/12 – is actually the spawn of hell once those around him begin to die.

With The Asylum’s feature The Haunting of Whaley House having released to DVD, Blu-ray, Redbox and Netflix today, we thought it time to chat with director Jose Prendes regarding his film. Read on!
“It seems like only yesterday that I was starting work on the script five months ago (writer’s note: see our exclusive interview with Prendes during production here), said writer and director Prendes, ”when the studio came to me with a proposition for a Whaley House film and I accepted, knowing I could do something unique given the limitations with time and money.”
Produced by The Asylum, The Haunting of Whaley House stars Stephanie Greco as (according to the film’s official synopsis), “Penny, (who) is a skeptic, despite the fact that she works as a tour guide at The Whaley House, considered America's most haunted house. I absolutely love this story! We've told you about The Asylum's #HoldYourBreath (formerly Don't Hold Your Breath) in the past, and now it seems like the fine purveyors of mockbuster cinema have gone and done it: They're taking the multiplexes by storm!

Independent production and distribution studio The Asylum announced today that the company will release its first theatrical film, supernatural horror project #Holdyourbreath on October 5, 2012. The film stars Katrina Bowden (TV’s “30 Rock”, American Reunion, Piranha 3Dd), and Randy Wayne (TV’s “True Blood” and “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”).
Based on the urban legend that you can breathe in evil spirits when passing cemeteries, #Holdyourbreath follows seven friends embarking on a weekend camping trip who pass a run-down cemetery and find themselves arguing about the legitimacy of the urban myth. When one friend refuses to hold his breath while passing by, he...

Nazis at the Center of the Earth (2012) When compared to other endeavors from The Asylum, director Joseph J. Lawson and writer Paul Bales’ SyFy shocker “Nazis at the Center of the Earth” is pretty solid entertainment. Although the special effects are cheap and obvious, the acting is a notch below pathetic, and there’s not much of a plot to speak of, the flick seems to be at peace with its shortcomings. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the entire feature is its complete lack of morals; there are a fair number of disgusting moments sprinkled throughout, including a bit involving abortions and stem-cell research. It’s a pretty horrifying sequence, and it almost seems a little out-of-place amongst Asylum’s typical low-rent shenanigans. Then again, chances are you’re not watching something like “Nazis at the Center of the Earth” because you’re looking for intelligent, high-brow cinema. No,...

“Wouldn’t it be hard to make a movie about a huge Nazi army in an underground world in Antarctica on a next-to-nothing budget?” you might ask. The answer is “yes.”
A crack team of scientists stationed in Antarctica accidentally discover a piece of aluminum sheeting with a swastika painted on it buried one whole inch below the surface of the snow where it has been since 1945 when Nazis fled to the snowy continent to continue their mad plans to rule the world. Sensing their aluminum sheeting has been discovered, Nazis race to the surface and abduct the two scientists away to their enormous underground Nazi lair.
The rest of the scientists, led by Jake Busey, go looking for their co-workers and come upon a hole in the ground that leads to this crazy world.

Say what you will about The Asylum, they seem to be on a roll in 2012. 2 Headed Shark Attack and Air Collision were both ridiculously entertaining, and the full trailer for Nazis at the Center of the Earth gives me hope the fun streak will continue.

Air Collision, the best action film ever directed by a woman (for The Asylum), has a great ensemble cast and comes from a really innovative company; The Asylum, like Roger Corman’s various studios, is game to give a woman a chance to direct a genre film as well as to cast all ethnicities and both sexes for all kinds of roles. In short, I love The Asylum.
Director Liz Adams had one award-winning short film under her belt (Side Effect) when she went in for an interview at The Asylum. She was originally asked to write the fast-paced script for the then-unnamed action movie, but was offered the chance to submit herself as the director as well. “I threw my hat into the ring to direct and they gave me a shot,” she says. Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark Announced: The Asylum officially announced the third film in their Mega Shark series:
“The Asylum has officially greenlit production on Mega Shark Vs. Mecha Shark, a much anticipated third installment in the ‘Mega Shark’ franchise, following Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus in 2009 and Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus in 2010. When Mega Shark returns in this all-new feature film, the government releases the top-secret Mecha Shark to defeat the franchise’s popular monster in a fierce battle that threatens the planet.
‘The fan response to the Mega Shark franchise has been rabid,’ said The Asylum partner Paul Bales. ‘In addition to a very persuasive online petition, we found that Mega Shark has taken on a life of her own.

Not too long ago I was in communiqué with an ex-Asylum director and joked about pitching them my idea for Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark. Yesterday The Asylum announced the third installment in their Mega Shark franchise... Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark. I think The Asylum might be tapping my phone, hacking my emails, or jacking directly into my brain.
Or it could just be that Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark is such a natural progression for this franchise that I’m hardly the only one to come up with such an obvious premise? Think about it.
The Mega Shark is kind of to The Asylum what Godzilla is to Toho. Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus was their Godzilla, King of the Monsters. Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus could be any one of a myriad of Godzilla vs. sequels. Mega Piranha is their Rodan. 2012: Moby Dick is their Mothra. Mega Python vs. Gatoroid...

It’s becoming apparent that America is smitten with cheesy giant killer animals flicks. Much like Toho reigned supreme over giant monster films, led by the legendary Godzilla, popular direct-to-dvd studio The Asylum is making a move for the throne of our current generation. What began with Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus has garnered so much success that it spawned a sequel, Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus. You’re beginning to see why these films are so much fun, right?
The Asylum makes no effort to mislead it’s audience, wearing it’s schlocky heart on it’s sleeve. The devil is in the details, they say, but with The Asylum, the details are all in the title. Having a long and still growing list of films under their belt, The Asylum now plans to add a third installment to the Mega Shark franchise, having officially greenlit production on Mega Shark vs.

I mean, who doesn't?
With so many Nazi Zombie movies coming out (Iron Sky, Puppet Master X, The 25th Reich), how can I ever decide which will be the best? Between these, and the recent releases of Blubberella and Bloodrayne: The Third Reich, this has been a really really good year. For this kind of shit.
In Nazis at the Center of the Earth, probably based on true events, Dominique Swain and Jake Busey are scientists based in Antarctica who discover a secret Nazi base hidden in the center of the (duh! you didn't know?) hollow Earth. They are accompanied by a bunch of other young, hot scientists who were sent to do science in Antarctica. Can you believe Nazis have been hiding in the center of the Earth all this time?

For my money the most shocking aspect of the trailer for The Asylum’s Nazis at the Center of the Earth is finding out that star Jake Busey is not actually playing a subterranean Nazi zombie.
In the flick Busey (Contact) and Dominique Swain (Face-Off) lead a team of Antarctic researchers abducted by a team of masked stormtroopers and dragged deep underground to a hidden continent in the center of the earth where Nazi survivors, their bodies a horrifying patchwork of decaying and regenerated flesh, led by Dr. Josef Mengele are preparing to revive the Third Reich.
Longtime Asylum FX supervisor Joe Lawson makes his directorial debut. Asylum stalwart Paul Bales scripted this tale of hollow earth horror.
Nazis at the Center of the Earth will surface on DVD and VOD come April 24th. Here’s the trailer of the underground goose-stepping nightmare The Asylum is preparing to unleash.

If the History Channel's "Ancient Aliens" is correct, the notorious Nazi mad scientist Dr. Josef Mengele may have escaped with some of his SS brethren to another galaxy in a UFO. Or… If The Asylum is correct, Mengele and his living dead Gestapo escaped deep underground. The Asylum may be right about this one because they have photographic evidence of Nazis at the Center of the Earth.
